Talespin: Issues of the Heart

Chapter 1: Routine Interrupted

It was a typical sunny day in Cape Suzette, the coastal city bustling with activity. The residents went about their day, either tending to their businesses or enjoying the warm weather by the harbor. At Higher for Hire, the small but efficient air cargo service, the day started like any other. Baloo and Kit were preparing for a delivery, while Becky managed the office and Molly played with Wildcat in the hangar.

As Baloo and Kit loaded the last of the cargo onto the Sea Duck, Baloo couldn't help but feel proud of his plane. Despite the loss of his business and the Sea Duck serving as collateral, the plane was his pride and joy. The Sea Duck had seen its fair share of modifications, including pontoons for water landings, and it was his most treasured possession.

Once the Sea Duck took off and they cleared the harbor entrance cliffs, Baloo and Kit engaged in a conversation about their upcoming flying lesson. Baloo planned to teach Kit how to use instruments to fly straight and level when visible landmarks weren't available. They were examining the horizon indicator and compass, discussing the nuances of instrument flying when their routine flight took an unexpected turn.

Suddenly, they were attacked by Don Karnage and his Air Pirates. Caught off guard, Baloo and Kit fought valiantly to escape their pursuers. Amid the chaos, a stray bullet found its way through the Sea Duck's fuselage and into Baloo's lower chest. He grunted in pain, trying to maintain control of the plane and lose the pirates, which took most of his energy.

With the pirates finally off their tail, Baloo, exhausted and in pain, directed Kit to take over the controls. Kit, now 16 years old and with some flying experience under Baloo's guidance, took over as the primary pilot. Baloo, still conscious but barely holding on, instructed Kit to stall the Sea Duck offshore of Higher for Hire and jump if he were to pass out. They radioed Becky and Wildcat, informing them of their situation and requesting help.

Upon landing, Baloo insisted that Kit fetch Wildcat and the medical kit. He didn't want Becky to see him in his current state. However, as expected, she was the first to board the Sea Duck. Her eyes widened in shock at the sight of Baloo's bloodied form.

"I'm calling an ambulance!" she declared, her voice filled with concern.

"No ambulance. No hospital," Baloo managed to say, his voice strained from the pain.

Becky was prepared to ignore his plea, but Baloo grabbed her arm, his grip weak but determined. "Please," he begged, "I can't go to the hospital."

Chapter 2: A Difficult Decision

As Baloo clung to consciousness, he tightly gripped Becky's arm, shaking his head weakly. He was no longer able to speak, but the determination in his eyes was evident. Just moments later, he succumbed to the pain and exhaustion, passing out on the floor of the Sea Duck.

Wildcat rushed in with the medical kit, quickly assessing the situation and starting to bandage Baloo's wound. Becky, still in shock, announced her intention to call an ambulance despite Baloo's demands. Wildcat continued working on Baloo's wound but spoke up, "Baloo wouldn't want that, Becky."

Becky, her concern for Baloo overriding her frustration, asked Wildcat why Baloo was so adamant about avoiding the hospital. Wildcat hesitated for a moment before explaining, "Well, uh, you see, Baloo's got this heart thing. It, um, doesn't always beat the right way. He told me it's called... uh... arr-something, I think."

Becky's heart clenched at the revelation, her concern for Baloo now mixed with understanding and sympathy. She knew how much flying meant to him, but she also couldn't bear the thought of losing him. As she glanced at the blood pooling on the floor, she realized that she had to make a decision, and fast.

Her mind raced as she weighed the options. On one hand, she wanted to honor Baloo's wishes and find a way to treat him without jeopardizing his ability to fly. On the other hand, she couldn't ignore the severity of his condition and the risk it posed to his life. As she contemplated her decision, the sounds of the city outside seemed to fade away, leaving only the ticking of the clock on the wall and the shallow breaths of her injured friend.

After what felt like an eternity, Becky made her choice. With a heavy heart, she ran to the phone, her fingers trembling as she dialed the number. As she waited for the call to connect, she silently prayed that she was making the right decision and that Baloo would understand.

Chapter 3: In Sickness and In Health

The ambulance sped through the city, its siren wailing as it carried Baloo to the hospital. Becky sat beside him, her eyes red and swollen from crying. The driver and doctor, noting her obvious distress, assumed that she was a terrified wife worried for her husband's life. Wildcat, Molly, and Kit followed in Becky's car, a somber mood filling the vehicle.

Upon arrival at the hospital, Baloo was rushed into the emergency room. Becky was led to the waiting room, where she sobbed uncontrollably. After some time, a registration nurse approached her with a gentle demeanor, attempting to gather some information.

"Can I get your address, please?" asked the nurse softly.

"Uh, 1313 Harbor Drive," Becky replied, sniffling.

"And your phone number?"

"555-4732."

The nurse continued, "And how old is Mr. Cunningham?"

Becky paused, confusion evident on her face. "Mr. Cunningham?"

"Yes, your husband," clarified the nurse.

Becky shook her head. "My husband died six years ago. The patient in surgery is Baloo, my pilot."

The nurse, understanding the mix-up, said she would get another form. Upon returning with the new form, she began the questioning again, this time focusing on Baloo. "What's his last name?" she asked.

Becky hesitated before admitting, "I don't know. Everyone just calls him Baloo."

"And his address?"

Becky provided the Higher for Hire address and explained, "He has a bed in the shack behind the hangar."

The nurse sighed, realizing the situation. "We can wait for Baloo to contribute to the registration." Before leaving, she asked Becky a personal question: "Are you his girlfriend?"

Becky thought long and hard before answering, "No, but I love him."

By this time, the rest of the Higher for Hire crew had joined Becky in the waiting room. The nurse inquired if any of them were related to Baloo, and they could only respond with "not really." The nurse understood and allowed them all to wait together.

Hours passed, with the only interruption being a request for AB positive blood. "We need AB positive blood for Baloo," said a nurse entering the waiting room. "It's rare, but it's what he needs."

Kit suggested that Becky take Molly home. "Becky, maybe you should take Molly home. We'll call you if anything happens."

"No," Becky replied firmly. "I'm not going anywhere. But could you and Wildcat take Molly home and put her to bed?"

They agreed, and Becky gave them money for supper. With Becky's car already there, they left to take care of Molly.

Around midnight, the main surgeon emerged to speak with Becky. He also referred to Baloo as her husband, but she didn't bother correcting him. "We managed to repair most of the damage," the surgeon explained. "He'll need to stay in the hospital for a few days. You should go home and return tomorrow afternoon when he's expected to wake up."

"I want to see him first," insisted Becky.

Within an hour, Baloo was moved to his room. As she sat beside him, quietly crying, she resolved to stay by his side until he woke up and scolded her for bringing him to the hospital in the first place.

Chapter 4: A Long Night

Becky settled into the chair beside Baloo's hospital bed, her eyes never leaving his still form. She brushed her fingers gently over his fur, as if to reassure herself that he was still there. Despite the doctor's assurances, she couldn't shake the feeling of dread in the pit of her stomach.

The hospital room was quiet, save for the soft beeping of the heart monitor and the occasional footsteps of a passing nurse. As the night wore on, Becky's exhaustion began to take its toll. She struggled to stay awake, determined not to leave Baloo's side until he woke up.

Outside the hospital room, Kit and Wildcat returned after seeing Molly safely to bed. They stopped at the vending machine in the hallway, grabbing some coffee and snacks to keep themselves awake.

"How's Becky holding up?" Kit asked, concern etched across his face.

"I dunno, Kit," Wildcat replied. "She's real worried about Baloo. I mean, we all are, but she's taking it the hardest."

"Yeah," Kit nodded. "She really loves him. I just hope he's going to be okay."

They returned to the waiting room, where they found several other visitors dozing off in chairs. Kit and Wildcat sat down, their eyes heavy with fatigue. They knew they wouldn't be getting much sleep tonight.

Back in Baloo's room, Becky finally succumbed to her exhaustion, her head drooping onto the edge of Baloo's bed. She slept fitfully, her dreams filled with images of Baloo in pain, and the overwhelming fear of losing him.

The first light of dawn began to creep through the window, casting a soft glow over Baloo and Becky. As the morning progressed, doctors and nurses bustled through the hallway, signaling the beginning of a new day.

Becky awoke with a start, her heart pounding as she recalled her nightmare. Blinking the sleep from her eyes, she looked up at Baloo, relieved to see him still resting peacefully. She squeezed his hand and whispered, "You're going to make it through this, Baloo. I know you will."

As the day wore on, Becky continued her vigil, waiting for the moment when Baloo would open his eyes and reassure her that everything would be all right.

Chapter 5: Awakening

Becky spent the entire day by Baloo's side, dozing occasionally but never straying far from his bed. As the afternoon sun began to fade, Kit and Wildcat returned to the hospital, their faces showing the strain of a sleepless night.

"How's he doing?" Kit asked softly as they entered the room.

Becky looked up from her chair, her eyes bloodshot and weary. "No change," she replied. "The doctors said he should wake up soon, but he's still out."

Wildcat placed a gentle hand on Becky's shoulder. "You should go home and get some rest, Becky. We'll stay with Baloo."

Becky hesitated, torn between her exhaustion and her desire to be there when Baloo woke up. Finally, she relented. "Okay, but you call me the second he wakes up, you hear?"

"We promise," Kit assured her. With a heavy heart, Becky left the hospital, hoping that when she returned, Baloo would be awake and on the road to recovery.

As evening fell, Kit and Wildcat took turns watching over Baloo. The room was quiet, the only sound being the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor. Wildcat, still concerned about Baloo's condition, found himself talking to his unconscious friend.

"You know, Baloo, I've been thinking about all the crazy adventures we've had together," Wildcat began, his voice soft and filled with emotion. "And I realized that no matter what we've been through, we always come out on top. So, I know you're gonna pull through this, buddy. You're one tough bear."

Just as Wildcat finished speaking, Baloo's eyelids began to flutter. His fingers twitched, and a soft groan escaped his lips.

"Kit! Kit, he's waking up!" Wildcat shouted, his eyes wide with excitement.

Kit rushed over, his heart pounding as he watched Baloo's eyes slowly open. Baloo squinted against the harsh hospital lights, his vision blurry and unfocused.

"Wh-where am I?" he mumbled, his voice weak and barely audible.

"You're in the hospital, Baloo," Kit answered gently. "You were shot during the pirate attack, remember?"

Baloo's brow furrowed as the memories came flooding back. "Yeah, I remember," he said, wincing as a wave of pain washed over him. "Was Becky the one who called the ambulance?"

"She was," Wildcat confirmed.

Baloo's expression darkened. "I don't want to see her," he said firmly. "It's only a matter of time before my secret comes out."

Kit and Wildcat exchanged worried glances, unsure of how to respond. They both knew that Baloo was grateful for Becky's support and love, but his fear of losing the ability to fly was consuming him.

Kit and Wildcat shared an uncomfortable silence as they considered Baloo's words. They knew that Becky had been left with no other choice, but convincing Baloo wouldn't be easy.

"Baloo, you have to understand," Kit began, his voice pleading. "Becky didn't want to call the ambulance, but she was scared for your life. You were bleeding out, and there was no other option."

Baloo's expression softened ever so slightly, but he remained silent, his gaze fixed on the ceiling.

Wildcat chimed in, "Yeah, buddy, she was really torn up about it. She didn't want to do anything that might hurt you, but she couldn't just stand by and let you die."

A long pause filled the room before Baloo finally spoke. "I know," he admitted, his voice barely audible. "I know she did what she thought was best. It's just... flying is everything to me. If they ground me for good, I don't know what I'll do."

Kit put a hand on Baloo's shoulder, offering what comfort he could. "We'll figure it out, Baloo. Whatever happens, you've got us. We're a family, and we'll stick together through thick and thin."

Baloo looked at Kit and Wildcat, his eyes misty with gratitude. "Thanks, guys. That means a lot to me."

As Baloo's eyes began to grow heavy, Kit and Wildcat settled in for the night, determined to stay by their friend's side. They knew the road ahead would be difficult, but they also knew that together, they could face anything.

Chapter 6: A Heavy Heart

Kit picked up the phone and dialed Becky's number, his hands shaking slightly. As it rang, he took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. When she answered, he immediately blurted out, "Becky, Baloo's awake."

There was a brief silence on the other end before Becky responded, her voice trembling with relief. "Oh, thank goodness. How is he?"

Kit hesitated before sharing Baloo's earlier sentiments. "He... he's upset about the ambulance. He didn't want you to call it. But, Becky, you did the right thing. I just wanted you to know before you come to see him."

"I understand," Becky replied, her voice cracking. "I'll stay home with Molly tonight and come by in the morning. Thanks for letting me know, Kit."

The next morning, Baloo had come to terms with the fact that he didn't hate Becky for saving his life. When she arrived, he greeted her warmly, assuring her that there were no hard feelings. They spent the morning talking about inconsequential things, trying to keep the atmosphere light. They shared stories about their past adventures and joked about the chaos that seemed to follow them everywhere.

Nurses came in periodically to check Baloo's vitals. One older RN furrowed her brow as she checked his heart rate. She quickly left the room and returned with a doctor, who proceeded to listen to Baloo's heart with his stethoscope.

The worry on Baloo's face spoke volumes. Becky, tears streaming down her face, choked out, "I'm so, so sorry." She kissed his cheek, her tears falling onto his chest.

The doctor, realizing that his news wasn't a secret, said, "I'm sorry, but I have to notify the aviation authorities about your condition."

Baloo nodded solemnly. He looked down at his bandages and whispered, "I wish it had killed me."

Becky collapsed in tears, her guilt and sadness overwhelming her. She couldn't bear the thought of Baloo never being able to fly again, and the weight of her decision pressed heavily on her heart. They sat in silence, their shared pain filling the room, as the reality of the situation began to sink in.

Chapter 7: Grounded

The letter from the Civil Aeronautics Authority (CAA) arrived before Baloo's departure from the hospital. Becky read it out loud to Baloo and Kit.

"Pending a full medical examination, Baloo's license to fly has been suspended. He can arrange for such an examination at his discretion, but if he waits longer than one year, the process of recertification will have to start completely from the beginning."

Baloo sighed and looked at Becky. "Guess you should start looking for a pilot to replace me, at least until Kit can take over."

Becky raised an eyebrow. "What about Kit's training?"

Baloo glanced at Kit and smiled. "He's advancing pretty well. If I could fly as his copilot and continue his instruction, he could soon become the pilot for Higher for Hire."

Kit chimed in, "But my training needs to be done by a certified pilot, right?"

Baloo nodded, and then apologized to Kit for his earlier comment about wishing the bullet had killed him. "In that situation, if I'd died, it probably would've meant your death too, kiddo."

Kit replied, understandingly, "I know what you meant. And I'm grateful you told me how to crash the Sea Duck to save my life if it came to it."

Becky then asked Baloo if he knew of any pilots they could hire. Baloo thought for a moment and listed a few names. "I taught most of them how to fly. They're good pilots."

Becky considered this. "One of them might be best. I won't hand over the keys to the Sea Duck to just anyone."

This brought a smile to Baloo's face. "Glad to know my baby will be taken care of, even if I'm not the one at the controls."

During their next visit with the doctor, he mentioned that some doctors were working on ways to control mild arrhythmia using simple treatments like healthier eating, exercise, and stress reduction.

Becky laughed, "Baloo doesn't have stress; he's a carrier!"

They all chuckled in agreement. The doctor cautioned that while these treatments might help, the CAA might not see things that way.

As Baloo prepared for his release from the hospital, they discussed where he would recover. Baloo suggested his bed in the shack, but Becky disagreed.

"You're coming to my apartment for at least the first week. I want to keep an eye on you, and I can make sure you're eating right. We'll work on the exercise part later," she added with a smirk, "once my whip and chair arrive."

Baloo laughed, knowing she was only teasing. "You sure know how to motivate a bear, Beckers."

With arrangements made, they all felt a little more hopeful about the future. Baloo knew he had a long road ahead, but with Becky and Kit by his side, he was ready to face whatever challenges came his way.

Chapter 8: Goodnight

Once they arrived at Becky's apartment, everyone began settling in for the evening. The issue of sleeping arrangements, however, was still a topic of concern.

"Don't worry, I've got it all figured out," Becky said. "I'll sleep in Molly's bed for the week while Baloo recovers in my room."

Molly, who had been listening in, grinned widely. "Yay! Slumber party with Mama and Baloo!"

With the sleeping arrangements settled, Becky started preparing dinner. As she chopped vegetables, she reminded Baloo of the healthy meal plan the doctor had given them. Baloo grumbled good-naturedly but ultimately agreed to give it a try.

"Okay, okay, I'll give this rabbit food a shot, but I ain't makin' any promises," Baloo said with a chuckle.

As the evening wore on, Molly showered Baloo with affection, presenting him with drawings she had made for him. Despite his exhaustion, Baloo appreciated the love and attention.

"Molly, these drawings are great! You've got a real talent, kiddo," Baloo praised her warmly.

Eventually, it was time for Molly to go to bed. Becky tucked her in after a quick bedtime story, and then turned her attention to Baloo.

"Alright, big guy, let's get you settled in," she said, helping him up and guiding him to her bedroom.

Baloo tried to protest. "Becky, I can go back to my shed. I don't want to put you out—"

"Nonsense," Becky interrupted. "You're staying here, and that's final."

With a stern warning not to get up or walk without notifying her first, she left him to rest. About an hour later, Becky decided it was time for her to get some sleep too. After checking on Molly, she realized that sharing her daughter's bed might not be as comfortable as she remembered. Frustrated, she tried using the living room couch, only to discover it wasn't a sleeper sofa.

"Ugh, why can't anything be simple?" she muttered under her breath.

With no other options, she carefully slipped into bed beside Baloo, keeping a respectful distance between them. She lay there for a moment, staring at the ceiling, then whispered, "Goodnight, Baloo."

Baloo, who had been feigning sleep, whispered back, "Goodnight, Becky."

With a small smile, Becky finally allowed herself to drift off to sleep.

Chapter 9: Shocked Awake

The next morning, Becky awoke to an unusual sight. She found herself snuggled up against Baloo's furry chest, her arm draped over him. Panicking, she glanced up to see Baloo looking back at her, amusement in his eyes. She let out a scream and jumped out of bed.

Catching her breath, she asked Baloo, "How long have I been doing that?"

"The hugging me thing?" Baloo replied, still amused. "About a half hour."

Relieved, Becky sighed. But then Baloo added, "Well, since about a half hour after you crawled into bed, actually."

Frustrated, she hit him with her pillow before grabbing her clothes and heading to the bathroom to change. Afterward, she woke Molly up and started preparing breakfast for everyone.

As they sat around the kitchen table enjoying their meal, Baloo couldn't help but make jokes about the sleepover. "You know, Beckers, I never thought I'd be part of a slumber party," he said with a wink. "I guess we're all getting closer, huh?"

Molly, oblivious to the innuendo, just giggled while Becky blushed furiously. Before leaving, Becky sternly told Baloo to behave himself while she was gone.

After dropping Molly off at school, Becky went to her office, planning to make it a half day so she could be around for Baloo. She called some of Baloo's pilot suggestions and then reached out to Kit and Wildcat to discuss the situation. By Monday, she hoped Baloo would be able to come into work and stay safe while she caught up on everything.

Returning home around 2 PM, Becky found Baloo in the living room, flipping through channels on the TV.

"Hey, Baloo," she greeted him, trying to sound casual. "How are you feeling?"

"Better, thanks," he replied, grinning. "But I gotta admit, I'm bored out of my skull."

Becky chuckled. "Well, you need to rest, but maybe we can find something more entertaining for you to do."

As the afternoon progressed, Becky and Baloo spent time together, chatting and laughing, their earlier embarrassment fading away. They shared stories about their past adventures, reminisced about their favorite moments together, and discussed their plans for the future of Higher for Hire.

By the time evening rolled around, Baloo was feeling much better, and Becky was hopeful that he would be well enough to return to work soon. The two friends continued to enjoy each other's company as the day came to an end, grateful for the bond they shared.

At bedtime, Baloo teasingly asked, "So, are you gonna take another hour to figure it out or just get into bed from the start?"

Becky rolled her eyes but smiled. "I think I'll stick to Molly's bed tonight," she said, giving him a playful shove. "But don't get too comfortable; I'll be keeping an eye on you, mister."

With that, they said their goodnights, each settling into their respective sleeping arrangements, grateful for the friendship and support they shared.

Chapter 11: The replacements

The next morning, Becky awoke in the same position as the previous day, snuggled up against Baloo's chest. "How did I get in here?" she asked herself.

"Well," replied Baloo, "half asleep and in a bad mood if I remember right."

After breakfast, Baloo mentioned that he was feeling much better, and if she wanted to start interviewing pilots that day, he'd be able to come along. Eager to make progress, they made some calls and set up appointments with prospective pilots that morning.

The first candidate was Jim, an experienced pilot with a friendly demeanor. Becky asked about his experience and how he would handle a difficult delivery.

Jim: "I've been flying for over ten years now, and I'm pretty confident in my skills. If there's a challenging delivery, I'm sure I can figure out a solution."

Baloo then asked, "What if you need to make a delivery during a storm with low visibility?"

Jim: "I'd rely on my instruments and my training to get the job done safely."

Next up was Lisa, a young pilot who was enthusiastic about the opportunity. Becky inquired about her experience flying in different weather conditions.

Lisa: "I've flown in all types of weather, from heavy rain to snowstorms. It's all about being prepared and knowing your limits."

Baloo wanted to know how she would handle a delivery to a location with limited landing options.

Lisa: "I've had experience with that. I've had to land on small airstrips and even improvised landing zones. You just have to stay calm and focused."

Their third interview was with Marco, a seasoned pilot with an impressive resume. Becky asked him about his experience with cargo deliveries and any challenging situations he had encountered.

Marco: "I've been in the business for fifteen years, and I've seen it all. One time, I had to deliver medical supplies to a remote village during a blizzard. It was tough, but I managed to land safely and deliver the cargo on time."

Baloo asked, "How do you handle tight deadlines and unexpected challenges?"

Marco: "Flexibility is key. You have to be ready to adapt to any situation and think on your feet."

After the interviews, Baloo and Becky returned home to discuss the candidates over a late lunch. Becky was impressed by Jim's experience and calm demeanor, while Baloo was leaning more towards Lisa for her enthusiasm and adaptability.

Becky: "I think Jim could be a good fit. He's got the experience and seems level-headed."

Baloo: "Yeah, but Lisa's got that fire in her. I think she could handle anything we throw at her."

As they continued discussing the applicants, they decided to take the rest of the day to mull over their options. The evening passed quickly, and bedtime approached. Becky, having resigned herself to the situation, got directly into bed with Baloo, maintaining a respectful distance… at first.

Chapter 12: Not Fighting It.

Monday morning arrived, and it was time to test their top two candidates, Jim and Lisa, with a day of work split between them. Baloo would fly with them to see how they handled the cargo runs. They flipped a coin to determine the order, and Jim got the first day's run. It was a heavy load but not too far away.

Jim completed the preflight checks and took the pilot's seat, with Baloo as the copilot and Lisa in the jump seat. When Jim hesitated at one point, Baloo pointed out a new switch near his left knee, explaining they had moved it for better access during night flying. Jim nodded and continued.

Taking off, Jim's handling of the pontoons was a bit off, but Baloo didn't dock any points, knowing it was just plane-specific experience. They arrived at their destination, and Jim managed to unload the machinery parts with some difficulty. Baloo mentioned that the client usually helped unload when necessary and that he'd try to note it on the flight plan for future reference.

All in all, it wasn't a bad interview flight for Jim. Lisa, not as strong as Jim but not as petite as Becky, had a fair performance during her takeoff and landing, having watched Jim for tips. Her cargo was dry goods and linen, and she was fortunate in that regard. They alternated for the rest of the day, and in the end, Baloo gave the nod to Jim. Becky had told him she wouldn't interfere, trusting Baloo to pick his replacement.

Becky and Baloo took both candidates out for dinner to thank them for applying. Jim and Lisa, both acquainted with Baloo, were appreciative, and Lisa harbored no hard feelings, believing the test had been fair. Afterward, Becky and Baloo returned to her apartment, prepared a quick meal for Molly, and then retired to Becky's bed. It was no longer a question; they had grown comfortable sharing the space.

Chapter 13: Unusual Request

The days continued along as the new normal. Kit was the big winner because Jim was a certified pilot and could give him instruction on flying. Since Baloo taught Jim, he could also go over things with Kit at night just sitting in the cockpit. As Baloo started to feel better, he moved back into his shack. It felt good to be 'home,' not that he didn't feel welcomed at Becky's apartment either. He got to see her every day at work, anyway, so it all worked out.

When the weekend came around, Becky had an unusual request for Baloo. They were in her office after work, discussing their plans for the evening.

"Baloo, can I ask you something a bit... personal?" Becky began hesitantly.

"Sure, Beckers. What's on your mind?" Baloo responded, curious.

Becky took a deep breath, "Would you like to come over for a late supper tonight?"

Baloo raised an eyebrow, "How late are we talkin'?"

"Until Monday morning," Becky stated matter-of-factly.

Baloo looked at her, surprised, "You mean the whole weekend?"

"Yes, Baloo," Replied Becky, seeming a little confused by her request herself.

Baloo needed more clarification. "You mean like sleepin' in the same bed again for the whole weekend?"

Becky blushed, "Yes, but I want to make it clear that I'm not offering or expecting anything more than that. Just... company." She thought a moment and explained, "I think I've just grown used to your mangy hide and I'm having trouble sleeping without it."

Baloo scratched his head, considering the request. "I don't know, Becky. What if you get too used to my mangy hide and it makes things awkward when a more appropriately aged suitor comes along?"

Becky sighed, "I understand your concerns, but I really could use the comfort for now. And it's just for this weekend, so I can wean myself off. Would you be willing to do that for me?"

Baloo thought about it for a moment. He had also grown used to having her hugging him at night and found it comforting. "Alright, Beckers. I'll do it, but just for this weekend. But this is the last time, right."

"Of course," Becky agreed, relieved. "I think I'll be okay after that. I'm still a little concerned after how badly you were injured and need to know you're going to be okay."

Baloo nodded, "Sounds good to me. I'll come over for a late supper tonight, and we'll take it one night at a time."

Chapter 14: Comfort

On Friday night, Baloo arrived at Becky's apartment, feeling both intrigued and hesitant about the weekend ahead. As he entered, Molly excitedly greeted him with a big hug.

"Baloo! I'm so happy you're here for the weekend!" she exclaimed.

"Me too, kiddo," he replied, ruffling her hair affectionately.

After a delicious late supper, they all settled in for the night. Becky led Baloo to her bedroom, and he couldn't help but feel a bit awkward about the situation. However, he remembered their conversation and knew that she simply wanted his comforting presence.

As they lay down, Becky snuggled up to Baloo in a spooning position. She held onto him tightly, her arm wrapped around his massive body. Baloo felt confused but couldn't deny that it was a nice feeling to be so close to her.

"Thanks for doing this, Baloo," Becky whispered. "I really appreciate it."

"No problem, Becky," he murmured, feeling her warmth against him.

On Saturday, they spent the day together, going on a picnic in the park. Baloo helped Molly with her first-grade homework, relating everything to flying in his unique way.

"Hey, Molly, what's 2 plus 2?" Baloo asked.

"Four!" she responded enthusiastically.

"Right! And if you have four wings on a plane, that's called a biplane!" Baloo explained.

Becky watched the two of them with a fond smile, grateful for the bond they shared.

That night, as they prepared for bed, Becky mentioned how difficult it was to wrap her arm around Baloo's large frame. She thought it might work out better by switching positions, with Baloo holding her instead.

"Would you mind trying it the other way around tonight, Baloo?" she asked tentatively.

"Sure thing, Becky," he agreed, his voice gentle.

They settled in with Becky snuggled against his chest. Although Baloo didn't pull her as close as she had held him, she still nestled comfortably into his embrace.

Throughout Sunday, they enjoyed each other's company, watching movies and playing games. As evening approached, they discussed their sleeping arrangements for the final night.

"So, Baloo," Becky began, "which way do you prefer? Me holding you or you holding me?"

"Well, it doesn't really matter since it's the last night," Baloo pointed out. "Whatever you want."

Becky's expression suggested she had forgotten this detail, but something in her eyes made him doubt that she had genuinely forgotten.

As they lay down for their last night together, they settled into a position that was comfortable for both of them. The weekend had been full of warmth and affection, and as they drifted off to sleep, Baloo couldn't help but wonder what the future held for their relationship once that stopped.

Chapter 15: Breakdown

The next week went on much like the previous one, with Baloo taking occasional trips for unusual customers or tricky locations. Kit and Jim were bonding over their flying lessons, and everything seemed to be going well.

Becky seemed to be doing much better this week. She was smiling a lot more than she had since Baloo had been shot. It seemed like she was finally getting back to normal.

Then, on Friday, Becky approached Baloo with a smile on her face and a question, "Oh, Baloo, what have you got planned for the weekend?"

Baloo suspected where this was heading and decided he had better set things straight while he still could. Getting up from his chair, he called Becky into her own office and asked her to sit down. Shutting the door, he said he didn't plan to spend another weekend with her and wanted to know what was going on.

Becky hesitated for a moment before confessing her own confusion. "I don't really know, Baloo. Something happened when you were wounded," she began, her voice trembling slightly. "It changed me, somehow. I was petrified that you were going to d… die." Saying that word seemed to set off something within her. She looked at him with wide, fearful eyes, as if the memory was all too real. "You were bleeding so bad and unconscious and all."

Baloo understood all of this, but the fear in her eyes was rapidly ramping up more than he would expect from just talking about it. He wanted to break in and reassure her that he was well on the way to recovery, but she continued with her story.

"And then I felt horrible that I had caused you to never be able to fly again." A few tears started down her cheeks and her voice broke as she continued, "I felt guilty after our big argument, saying those things to you that I didn't mean at all." She looked at Baloo, begging him to forgive her. "And then having to identify your body, never being able to say I'm sorry or that I missed you... It was all too much."

Her tears started to pick up the pace and stream down her face as she went on, "I could never tell you again how much I loved you. How much I missed you." As she said this, her gaze seemed to drift away from Baloo, as if she were looking at someone else entirely. "I can't let that happen again, Jack. I can't lose you again!"

Becky's sobs grew louder, her body shaking violently. Baloo, not fully understanding what she was talking about, decided that she needed immediate medical attention. "Becky, we're gonna get you some help, okay?" he said, his voice full of concern.

Opening her office door, he picked her up and shouted, "Wildcat! Open the front door!" Wildcat ran to comply with worry on his face as Baloo carried Becky out to her car. Baloo realized he probably shouldn't be doing something as strenuous as lifting her, but she was so small that he figured it wouldn't cause any harm.

By the time they reached the hospital, Becky's crying had subsided somewhat, but she was still visibly upset. As Baloo carried her inside, she asked him in a voice that seemed to be lost in the past, "Why, Jack? Why did you leave me?"

Baloo's heart clenched at her words, and he replied gently, "I'm here, Becky. I'm not goin' anywhere." He rushed through the revolving doors, looking for help.

Chapter 16: Confusion

Three hours later, a nurse came to fetch Baloo from the waiting room. Becky was coming out of sedation and was coherent again. The attending physician had asked where her husband was, and she said he had brought her in and was probably in the waiting room.

When Baloo arrived at Becky's bedside, she looked much calmer. "Oh, hi, Baloo." she greeted him in a soft, almost ethereal voice. "Are you here, too?" The doctor stood up to speak with Baloo, and they moved to the other side of the room.

Quietly, the doctor asked Baloo, "Are you her husband?"

Baloo, surprised, replied, "No, I ain't."

The doctor raised an eyebrow. "I thought as much. Where is her husband now?"

"He died six years ago. Some sort of an accident," Baloo explained, feeling a pang of sadness.

"I see," the doctor nodded thoughtfully. "For some reason, she has mixed the two of you up. Do you know what might have caused this?"

Baloo hesitated for a moment, and then recounted the recent events, including his injury and how Becky had taken care of him during his recovery. He also mentioned how they had shared a bed, albeit innocently, and her recent request to share the bed again for a weekend. "It was when we were talking about doin' it again this weekend that she… well, I don't know. It's what set this all off, though."

"Why do you think that this weekend's plans had set her off?" asked the doctor.

"I wasn't planning on doin' it again, Doc," explained Baloo. "I told her that and asked her what was really going on. That's when she started getting all funny and everything."

Listening carefully, the doctor said, "It seems she's been using you as a sort of self-medication, Baloo. I'll need to talk to her more to understand the whole situation, but your presence will be important to her recovery. Can you remain available for her?"

Baloo nodded. "Of course, Doc. I'll do whatever it takes to help her."

"I know," the doctor replied. "You're a very good friend. Not many men would turn down a request from a pretty young woman like Mrs. Cunningham to spend the night with her. While our ultimate goal is to separate you from her husband in her mind, it might be beneficial if, for now, you stayed here in the room with her, just so she can see you. However, given your recent injuries, I must warn you that it could be physically demanding for you."

Baloo's expression turned determined. "I don't mind, Doc. She needs me."

The doctor nodded approvingly and left Baloo to sit by Becky's side. As he sat there, he couldn't help but think about the strange turn their relationship had taken. He wanted to help her, but he couldn't shake the feeling that he was somehow out of his depth. Still, he knew that he would do whatever it took to see her through this difficult time.

With Baloo's comforting presence, Becky seemed to slowly regain her composure. She held onto his hand tightly, her eyes flickering between him and the sterile hospital room. It was clear that she was still struggling to make sense of everything that had happened.

"Baloo," she whispered, her voice barely audible, "I'm so sorry. I didn't mean for any of this to happen. I just... I couldn't help it. You remind me so much of Jack, and I... I just wanted to feel close to him again."

Baloo squeezed her hand gently and offered her a small smile. "Hey, don't you worry about it, Beckers. We're gonna get through this together, okay? You're not alone."

Becky's eyes filled with tears, and she nodded gratefully. "Thank you, Baloo. I don't know what I would do without you."

As they sat there, hand in hand, Baloo couldn't help but feel a sense of determination growing within him. It didn't matter how confusing or challenging the situation was; he would be there for Becky, just as she had been there for him during his recovery. Together, they would get through this.

Chapter 17: Jack and Baloo

Over the following days, the three of them engaged in conversations that helped to uncover the depth of Becky's emotional state. One afternoon, as they sat in Becky's hospital room, the doctor gently prompted her to talk about her relationship with Jack.

The doctor asked, "Becky, can you tell us more about your relationship with Jack? How did you two meet and what was your life like together?"

Becky, hesitating: "We met in college. We were both studying business, and we just clicked right away. Our life together was wonderful. Of course, we had our share of arguments, like any couple, but we loved each other deeply."

Baloo, placing a comforting hand on Becky's: "I remember you mentioning him a few times. He must have been a great guy."

Becky, nodding: "He was. We had our differences, but we always worked things out. A week before Molly was born, though, we had a really big fight. Jack stormed out, and... that was the last time I saw him."

The doctor compassionately replied, "I can't imagine how hard that must have been for you, especially with Molly's birth right around the corner."

Becky, tearing up: "It was so difficult. I was still so angry when the police came to tell me about the accident. I never had a chance to say goodbye or apologize for our fight. And then I had to focus on Molly and being a single mother."

As the conversations continued, they discussed the events surrounding Baloo's injury and the guilt Becky had been carrying.

"Becky, can you tell us how you felt when Baloo was injured and how that may have affected your emotions?" asked the doctor.

Becky, looking at Baloo: "When Baloo was hurt, I was terrified. It felt like history was repeating itself, like I was losing someone else I cared about. I felt so guilty for not being able to prevent it."

Baloo, squeezing her hand: "Becky, it wasn't your fault. I don't blame you for any of it."

"It seems that the fear of losing Baloo triggered some unresolved emotions surrounding Jack's death," suggested the doctor. "How do you feel about that, Becky?"

Becky, wiping away tears: "I never truly had the chance to grieve for Jack. I just... I just didn't know how to cope. And when I was holding Baloo after his injury, it brought back all those feelings I'd buried."

As they continued to talk, the doctor guided Becky and Baloo through the process of understanding the complexities of her emotions and memories. They shared both tears and laughter as they navigated the healing process together, with Baloo offering unwavering support every step of the way.

Over the next week, the doctor worked closely with Becky, Baloo, and even Molly to help Becky process her emotions and build a support system. Each day, they spent time discussing her memories of Jack, her fears, and her feelings about her relationship with Baloo.

During one session, the doctor encouraged Molly to share her thoughts about her father, Jack, and Baloo.

Molly said, "I never knew my daddy, but Mom tells me he was a great man. I love hearing stories about him, but sometimes it makes me sad that he's not here. But Baloo... he's always been there for me. He's like a second dad."

Baloo, smiling: "Thanks, kiddo. You know I'll always be here for you and your mom."

Becky, touched: "Thank you, Baloo. You've been a rock for both of us."

The conversations, though difficult, gradually helped Becky to come to terms with her past and gain insight into her emotional journey. The doctor provided guidance on how to handle her feelings and how to maintain a healthy support system in the future.

"Becky," said the doctor, "it's essential to acknowledge and express your emotions, both about Jack and any other challenges you face. Remember that you have people who care about you and are here to support you."

Becky, nodding: "I understand. I'm grateful for Baloo, Molly, and everyone else who's been there for me. I just need to remember to lean on them when I need to."

As Becky's condition improved, the doctor eventually determined that she was ready to be discharged from the hospital. Before leaving, he made sure to provide her with resources and recommendations for ongoing therapy and support.

"I'm confident that you're on the right path, Becky," said the doctor. "Just remember that healing takes time, and it's okay to ask for help when you need it."

Baloo agreed. "Don't worry, doc. We'll take good care of her. Right, Molly?"

Molly, grinning: "You bet, Baloo!"

With that, they left the hospital, ready to face the challenges ahead as a stronger, more united family. They knew there would be difficult days, but they also understood that they could rely on each other for support and love, no matter what life threw their way.

Chapter 18: Hope

With Becky back home and quickly back at work, they seemed to finally have things getting under control again. Kit was about ready to solo, and they were all pretty excited about that. Once he got his certification, Jim might be able to go back into semi-retirement. He was willing to stay on as long as he was needed, though. This brought up Baloo's certification. He was recovered enough to fly, as far as his injuries were concerned, but the arrhythmia was still there.

Becky said it wasn't a bad idea to get a checkup in any event, and the CAA one was paid for by the government, so why not get the exam. It wouldn't hurt anything at this point. So they made the appointment. Becky drove him there and sat with him during much of the exam. They took blood and other samples. He had to walk on a treadmill. He had to turn his head and cough. They asked him some questions to determine his state of mind. Things like that.

Eventually, he was led into an office with the chief investigator. They spoke of his recent injury and how that was healing. Finally, they talked about the arrhythmia. The doctor said that he did indeed have a mild case of it, but if he could pass some stress tests, he would probably get his license back.

Baloo's eyes widened, and he stammered, "Y-You really think I could get it back?"

The doctor nodded. "Yes, but you'll need to lose some weight and get in better shape."

Baloo nearly had a heart attack on the spot. He picked up Becky in a big bear hug and said, "Get out your whip, Becky."

Becky laughed and told the doctor, "It's not what you think."

Baloo started eating right and exercising almost more than was good for him. He ran for up to 50 yards at a time and swam more than that. With Kit's help, he learned to play basketball, and Becky introduced him to Jack LaLanne. It only took him two months to lose his 50 lbs, and when he took the stress test again, he passed with flying (literally) colors.

So Jim went back into semi-retirement, Baloo was able to sign off on Kit's solo flight, and Becky and Baloo... well, that's another story.

The End.
