A Brand New Member

"I'm ready to work with you, Daddy," Angie announced when she entered the kitchen wearing cargo pants, a t-shirt and her boots. "My vest is by my backpack." She swiveled to look at her brother. "You look handsome, DJ," she said with a smile. He was wearing a blue collared shirt with his khaki pants.

"Thanks. There's a bunch of programs like last time but I'm in the ten and up group now so Mommy said we're gonna go to a meeting." He grinned at Catherine, who was packing a few snacks for the road. "Senator Pearl is going to be there, too."

"I love Senator Pearl. Tell her hi and that I'm at work with Daddy, okay?"

"Speaking of which," Steve said, grabbing a breakfast bar for himself as the kids munched theirs. "Let's get going. Your Uncle Danno is meeting us at HQ with breakfast and Mommy and DJ are having breakfast in the cafeteria."

"Have fun and be careful." Catherine hugged her very excited daughter before kissing her cheek. "You look every bit like a member of the team."

"Like you when you were Five 0 with Daddy?"

"Just like Mommy," Steve said and smiled as Catherine stood to peck his lips.

"You be careful, too."

"Promise." He bent to hug DJ. "Have a great day, I can't wait to hear all about it."

After the kids told each other, Cammie and Pumpkin goodbye, Angie took her daddy's hand and practically dragged him out to the truck.

"This a very very good breakfast, Uncle Danno," Angie said as she finished her last bite of malasada. "Thank you for bringing it."

"You are very welcome." Danny passed her a napkin. "We always had malasadas when Grace came to take your kids to work day. Gotta keep up the tradition."

"So," Steve said, checking his watch. "We can pick from a bunch of things to do. Remember we talked about them earlier? Do you think you want to check out Uncle Max's lab, see the 911 call center, do a crime scene investigation, watch the K-9 demonstration or ride along with me and Uncle Danno?"

Angie tilted her head, thinking. "What time can we see the dogs?"

"In a few minutes or again at four o'clock."

"I can't miss the dogs, I told Cammie I'd tell her all about it. Can we do that first?"

"We can do that right now." Steve offered a hand and she hopped off the chair in the break room.

"Yay, let's go!" Turning to her uncle she said, "Don't catch any bad guys without us, okay?"

After crossing a hand over his heart, Danny raised it in a pledge. "I wouldn't dream of it," he responded with an amused look at his best friend. "Go check out the dogs and I'll see you in a little while."

Angie and Steve sat front and center in the chairs lining the K-9 training area. They were surrounded by two dozen other HPD personnel and their children, and everyone clapped when an officer entered the ring with a German shepherd and introduced herself as Sargeant Megan Yi and her partner Cleo.

"Welcome, everyone, great to see you all," she said, smiling at the smattering of ohhhs when her partner sat at perfect attention in her vest and badge. "Can anyone tell me what kind of dog Cleo is?"

Several hands shot up, but Angie's was first. When called on she said, "Cleo is a German shepherd! Our dog Cammie is half German shepherd."

"That's right." She smiled and Angie beamed at Steve. "Several different dog breeds are trained in police work, but the German Shepherd is what most people think of when they think of a police dog. In fact, years ago, a name often used for the breed was police dogs."

"That's so cool," a boy about DJ's age who was seated next to his dad, said. "We have two dogs at home."

"Cleo lives with me when she's not working, so she's my partner and also my best friend."

"Like you and Uncle Danno, but Uncle Danno lives at his own house," Angie stage whispered, causing several of the officers in the group to chuckle and her father to lean down and kiss her head.

"From chasing down suspects, to sniffing out drugs and weapons, German Shepherds are proficient at all types of law enforcement duties. Who's ready for a demonstration?"

The spectators watched Cleo sniff out drugs hidden in a box, find a set of car keys thrown out on the grass, and apprehend a fellow officer pretending to be a criminal suspect.

After learning that expenses like equipment for a K9 police vehicle and dog bullet proof vests were not part of the regular police budget and are covered by private donations, Angie said, "I'm gonna tell Mommy and Governor Lea. They can make a new law to get all the dogs vests like mine and yours, Daddy."

"That's a great idea," Sergeant Yi told the exuberant little girl who'd lingered after the demo to pet Cleo and tell her she was very very brave and beautiful.

"Cleo and the other dogs would love that." She smiled at Steve. "And we'll take any budget help we can get."

Steve took Angie's hand and smiled. "You can talk to Mommy tonight, how about we let Officer Megan and Cleo get to work and we go check out what you want to see next?"

"Okay Daddy," she said before turning to the K-9 team. "Thank you very much, and be careful!"

"Spoken like a cop's daughter." Megan offered a bookmark with Cleo's image on it. "Have a great day, Angie. You, too, Commander," she said before releasing Cleo from a stay command and walking with her back into the unit's offices.

Back inside HPD, Angie paid rapt attention to the very familiar officer explaining evidence.

"The basics of forensic science is based on the principle that the perp always leaves clues after committing a crime.

"The evidence could be visible physical belongings to not so easily detectable evidence like fingerprints. Do we have any questions so far?"

Angie sat up straight and raised her hand. "Can we do our fingerprints, Uncle Duke? Daddy showed us how at home."

Duke grinned at Steve. "Of course he did. And we're definitely going to take everyone's fingerprints. Would you like to show the others how it's done?" He held up a scanner and the almost six year old nodded. "Okay, come on up, and let's get all our new friends to make a line. Then we'll get to see how all our fingerprints are different."

Their next stop was the forensic lab where Max explained additional types of evidence for a first and second grade group. When Angie pointed out the 'car prints' as she called tire tracks, on a large poster of different types of evidence, the medical examiner smiled.

"Very good. Being Commander McGarrett and Lieutenant Rollins' daughter, I am not surprised you are astute enough to notice a significant piece of the forensic puzzle, as it were."

"What's that mean, Uncle Max?" Angie's brow knitted like her dad's.

"It means you're smart and you picked out a good clue," a mom who was an HPD lieutenant standing to her side pointed out. "High five," she offered and Angie gleefully slapped her outstretched palm.

Max continued his presentation and the kids in attendance spotted different items the lab might analyze until the session was over and they dispersed for their next activity.

"Are you gonna drive?" Danny asked when they approached the car and Angie giggled.

"I'm too little yet, I can't reach the pedals. You're silly, Uncle Danno."

"Ok, then, let's get you in your booster and we're off to work." He opened the door with a flourish. "Officer McGarrett, buckle up." Turning to Steve as he climbed into the passenger seat, Danny smirked. "It'll be the safest ride along ever because your daddy has you in the car."

"Ready!" She threw both hands in the air. "Let's get the bad guys."

"Where are the bad guys, Daddy?" Angie asked, while sitting straight up in her seat.

They rolled up to a simulated crime scene where officers taking their children could run through procedures.

"Here we are, baby girl." Steve opened the door and she exited the car.

"I see yellow tape!" she gasped. "Bad guys were here!"

"Looks like they were." Danny grinned at her excitement while Steve pulled their vests from the trunk.

"We have to wear our vests to be careful." Angie donned hers as the partners shared a look and put their own tac vests on in the blazing heat of the day.

"Only for Angie," Danny said in a voice only Steve could hear. "Let's go, Officer McGarrett."

On their way home, Angie spoke non stop about the day. "Now that I'm almost six I can practice really really hard so when I'm grown up I can help you on the team. I'm gonna learn more about all the stuff: fingerprints and NDA…"

"DNA, baby girl," Steve corrected with a soft smile and she nodded excitedly.

"Yeah, that. DNA and tire prints and hair. Like how mine's curly cause you have wavy hair if it growed in and Mommy and DJ got straight hair." She took a breath and her father chuckled as the phone rang and he hit speaker.

"Hey, how's my crime fighter?" Catherine's voice filled the car. "DJ is saying goodbye to the new friends he made and we'll be on our way home."

"Mommy! It was so so fun! Cleo the dog and Officer Megan were so good and Uncle Max and Uncle Duke taught us stuff and we watched Uncle Chin show all our pictures on the table computer and Auntie Kono explained about tracking…that's finding people and how guns are very very dangerous and we should never touch them and me and DJ already know that but some kids maybe didn't and did you know there's different kinds of dirt and sand and strings from clothes …" another breath and Danny chuckled at her giving him a run for his money. "What's that called, Daddy?"

"Fibers."

"Fibers. And we took fingerprints even though we did that at home before and it was so so fun!"

Catherine laughed delightedly. "Sounds like you had the best day ever."

"I did!" She was grinning ear to ear. "Did you and DJ have fun? He said coming with Daddy last year was so fun and he was right cause he's so smart."

"We did," Catherine said. "You can tell each other all about it at dinner like last year. I'll see you soon."

"Okay, bye, Mommy!" Angie said while Steve added, "See you in ten minutes."

Turning to his smirking partner, he chuckled. "What?"

"Nothing," he shook his head and gestured to the beaming little girl in the back seat. "I'm just calculating how many years before Five 0 has a brand new member."
