Chapter 6: Virtue of Technology
Touch Me's phone rang with an incoming call, and he glanced at the screen to see the name of his ex-wife, Naomi, displayed. Taking a deep breath, he answered the call, mentally preparing himself for the conversation that was about to unfold.
"Hello, Naomi," Touch Me greeted her, his voice steady but tinged with a hint of caution.
Naomi wasted no time, her tone sharp and demanding. "Ryuki, I need to know when you're planning to send the money for the children. It's been weeks since the last payment, and I can't keep covering all the expenses on my own."
Touch Me felt a surge of frustration rise within him, but he tried to keep his composure. "Naomi, I've been dealing with some unexpected financial difficulties lately. I'm doing my best to sort things out, but I need a little more time."
Naomi's voice grew colder, laced with bitterness. "It's always some excuse, isn't it? The children need support, Ryuki, and they can't wait for your problems to be resolved. You have a responsibility as their father, and it's about time you start taking it seriously."
The words struck a nerve, and Touch Me's frustration turned into defensiveness. "I am taking my responsibility seriously, Naomi. It's not like I'm intentionally neglecting our children. I'm doing everything I can to provide for them."
Naomi scoffed, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "Really? Because it doesn't seem like it. They're growing up and they need more than just empty promises. They need financial stability and the support they deserve."
The argument escalated, each word becoming a weapon in their verbal clash. Accusations and grievances were hurled back and forth, the emotions raw and unfiltered. The pain of their failed marriage resurfaced, fuelling their anger and frustration towards one another.
Touch Me's voice strained with a mix of anger and desperation. "You think I don't care about our children? You think I'm not trying? I'm doing my best, Naomi, but life isn't always easy. I have my own struggles to deal with."
Naomi's voice softened, but there was still a hint of resentment. "I know life is hard, Ryuki, but our children shouldn't have to suffer because of it. They shouldn't have to bear the consequences of your choices."
The weight of her words hung heavy in the air, and Touch Me felt a pang of guilt. He knew deep down that she was right, that his children deserved better than the financial instability he was providing. It was a painful realisation that cut through his defenses.
"I... I understand, Naomi," Touch Me said, his voice filled with a mixture of regret and determination. "I'll find a way to make things right. I won't let our children down."
As the argument subsided, Touch Me found himself lost in a whirlwind of memories. His mind wandered back to a time when life seemed simpler, when he and Naomi were still together and the weight of responsibilities had not yet grown so heavy.
He remembered their early days of marriage, filled with love, laughter, and dreams of a bright future. They had shared moments of joy and tenderness, building a life together that seemed invincible. Their bond was unbreakable, or so he had believed.
The memories drifted to the moments when they had discovered they were expecting their first child. The excitement and anticipation that filled their hearts, the dreams they had woven for their growing family. It was a time of hope and anticipation, when the prospect of becoming parents brought them closer than ever before.
As the years went by, life had a way of wearing them down. The pressures and demands of work, financial strain, and the gradual erosion of their connection began to take their toll. The once-glowing ember of their love began to dim, overshadowed by arguments and unmet expectations.
Now, in the midst of their heated conversation, Touch Me couldn't help but feel a pang of nostalgia for those earlier days. He longed for the simplicity and happiness they had once shared, before the weight of responsibilities and the trials of life had clouded their love.
Reminiscing over his past relationship, Touch Me then proceeded to park his car outside the nondescript building that served as the investigation team's safehouse. It was a secure location, hidden away from prying eyes and protected by layers of security measures. He was greeted by service men from the National Police Agency.
The heavy metal door swung open, revealing a dimly lit corridor. Touch Me stepped inside and was greeted by the familiar scent of disinfectant and the low hum of surveillance equipment. He followed the path, his footsteps echoing through the silent hallway, until he reached a room at the end.
Inside, the room was filled with a mix of monitors, computers, and agents bustling about, each engrossed in their respective tasks. The atmosphere was one of focused intensity, as they worked tirelessly to gather information and piece together the puzzle that had brought them to this point.
Detective Rea, wearing her signature trench coat, looked up from her computer screen and spotted Touch Me. A small smile flickered across her face, a combination of relief and determination. She motioned for him to join her at the command center.
Touch Me made his way through the room, nodding at familiar faces and exchanging brief words of greeting. His heart raced with a mixture of anticipation and anxiety. The safehouse was a hub of activity, a place where the pieces of the puzzle were slowly falling into place, bringing them closer to the truth.
As he reached Rea's side, she gestured towards the array of screens displaying maps, surveillance footage, and various pieces of evidence. Their eyes met, conveying a shared understanding of the magnitude of the task at hand.
Rea leaned forward, her eyes shining with excitement, as she shared the latest breakthrough with Touch Me. "We've made a breakthrough, Touch Me. The team behind YGGDRASIL 2 has collaborated with Oxford University Scientists to develop a revolutionary method to enhance your user interface when diving into the virtual world. They've designed a specialised software that can detect the virtual signatures of the victims."
Touch Me's interest was piqued. Improving his user interface would undoubtedly enhance his ability to navigate the virtual realm and gather vital information. The prospect of working alongside Oxford University Scientists filled him with a mix of anticipation and curiosity.
"Tell me more," Touch Me urged, his voice tinged with eagerness.
Rea began explaining the technical details, her words laced with a sense of awe and admiration for the cutting-edge technology. "The scientists at Oxford University have devised a method to extract and analyse the unique virtual signatures left behind by individuals when they interact with the digital world. These signatures act as a sort of digital footprint, allowing us to trace their activities and gain insights into their experiences. With this, we were able to develop an interface similar to the YGGDRASIL game."
She continued, "By integrating this technology into your user interface, Touch Me, you'll be able to access a wealth of information previously inaccessible. It will enable you to uncover hidden connections, identify potential suspects, and gain a deeper understanding of the cases we're investigating."
Touch Me nodded, his mind spinning with the possibilities. The idea of delving even deeper into the virtual realm, armed with this advanced tool, invigorated him. It meant he could uncover truths that would have otherwise remained concealed, bringing justice to those who had suffered and restoring order to the chaos that surrounded them.
"I'm ready to embrace this new technology," Touch Me declared, his voice filled with determination. "The victims deserve justice, and if this software can help us achieve that, then we must seize this opportunity."
Rea smiled, her confidence in their abilities evident. "I knew you'd be up for the challenge, Touch Me."
Touch Me's consciousness merged with the virtual realm as he arrived at his designated spawn point in the Kingdom of Athisia. The familiar surroundings of lush landscapes, towering castles, and bustling towns welcomed him back. He took a moment to admire the vibrant colours and intricate details of the virtual world before him.
He headed towards the bustling adventurer's guild, the hub for brave souls seeking fame and fortune. The grand entrance stood tall, adorned with magnificent carvings and banners that fluttered in the virtual breeze. As he stepped inside, the air was abuzz with excitement and the chatter of fellow adventurers exchanging tales of their conquests.
Approaching the registration desk, Touch Me met the guild receptionist, a friendly woman with a warm smile. "Greetings," she greeted him. "Are you here to join the ranks of our brave adventurers?"
Touch Me nodded, a determined gleam in his eyes. "Indeed, I am. I seek to embark on epic quests, uncover hidden treasures, and protect the realms from the forces of darkness."
The receptionist nodded approvingly. "A noble endeavour, adventurer. Please fill out this form with your details." She handed him a parchment and a quill, which he promptly used to write his name, chosen class, and desired specialties.
With the form completed, Touch Me returned it to the receptionist, who studied it briefly before placing it in a stack of other registrations. "Welcome to the guild, Touch Me," she said, her voice brimming with enthusiasm. "May your journey be filled with excitement and triumph."
As Touch Me ventured deeper into the guild hall, he found himself surrounded by a diverse array of adventurers, each with their own unique armour, weapons, and distinct aura of determination. The sound of clinking armour, boisterous laughter, and the occasional roar of excitement filled the air, creating a vibrant atmosphere that resonated with his adventurous spirit.
Spotting a quest board adorned with numerous parchments, Touch Me approached it, scanning the available quests. His eyes settled on a parchment that depicted a perilous journey to an ancient temple, rumoured to hold untold riches and artefacts of great power. Without hesitation, he tore the parchment from the board and tucked it into his inventory.
With his registration complete and a quest in hand, Touch Me took a deep breath, feeling the surge of adrenaline coursing through his virtual veins. He stepped out of the guild hall and into the vast open world, his heart filled with anticipation. The Kingdom of Athisia was his playground, and as an adventurer, he was ready to forge his own legend, one quest at a time.
As he activated the VIRTUS system, a holographic display materialised before his eyes, seamlessly integrating with his field of vision. It was like YGGDRASIL's interface but adapted to fit this virtual world.
His vision sharpened, allowing him to see intricate details and hidden clues that were previously obscured. The heads-up display provided real-time data and analysis, highlighting potential leads and marking points of interest.
The interface appeared as a translucent overlay, blending with the virtual environment around him. It provided him with a wealth of information and tools, all conveniently accessible at a glance. At the center of the display, his character's vital statistics, such as health, stamina, and mana, were displayed in vibrant colours, indicating his current status.
Surrounding the central display were various panels and windows, each serving a specific purpose. A mini-map occupied a corner, revealing the surrounding terrain, landmarks, and points of interest. It dynamically updated as Touch Me explored, offering invaluable navigational assistance.
A quest log panel showcased his active quests, objectives, and progression. It allowed him to track his accomplishments, review quest details, and mark completed tasks, ensuring he never lost sight of his objectives.
The skill panel showcased Touch Me's extensive repertoire of abilities and talents. Each skill was represented by an intricately designed icon, accompanied by a brief description of its effects. He could easily select and activate skills with a mere thought, seamlessly transitioning between swordplay, magic, and other specialised abilities.
Additionally, a comprehensive inventory system provided Touch Me with a visual representation of his collected items, weapons, armour, and consumables. He could effortlessly manage his equipment, arrange items, and access their properties with a simple touch or gesture.
The VIRTUS interface also incorporated a communication hub, enabling Touch Me to interact with other users as well as his team in the real world. He could engage in real-time conversations, send messages, and form parties or guilds with fellow adventurers. A chat window appeared at the bottom of his field of view, displaying ongoing conversations and notifications.
The interface's advanced targeting system allowed Touch Me to assess enemies and allies with precision. It displayed vital information about potential threats, including their level, health, and status effects. This knowledge empowered him to make informed decisions in combat, strategise his actions, and exploit weaknesses.
Drawing his sword and tightening his grip, Touch Me set off on his first grand adventure, eager to prove his mettle and make a mark in the virtual realm.
"Are you sure this is okay?" Sophia asked with concern towards the MI6 head of operations, Sylvester.
"We've started as a team to investigate missing individuals in a virtual world, but now we're trying to advocate exploration of said world. I'm worried that it will backfire." Sophia explained.
Sylvester, the MI6 head of operations, met Sophia's concerned gaze with a confident smile. "I understand your reservations, Sophia, but I assure you, the Japanese government want this as much as us. They wouldn't want to lose the chance to explore such technology even if they have lost several people to this virtual world."
Sophia hesitated for a moment, glancing at the sleek, futuristic equipment that surrounded them in the high-tech safe house. "But what about the potential risks? Diving into a virtual world can be unpredictable. We're essentially merging reality and fantasy. What if something goes wrong?"
Sylvester's expression turned serious as he leaned forward, his voice filled with conviction. "I won't deny that there are inherent risks, Sophia. But with every great advancement, there are challenges to overcome. The VIRTUS system has undergone extensive testing and rigorous safety protocols. Our partnership with other UK universities ensures that we have the brightest minds working on this technology."
He gestured towards a holographic display showcasing the potential applications of the VIRTUS system. "Imagine the possibilities, Sophia. It's not just about gaming. VIRTUS can revolutionise education, medicine, and countless other fields. It will bridge gaps, connect people across the globe, and push the boundaries of human potential."
Sophia's eyes widened, a glimmer of curiosity replacing her initial apprehension. "So, you're saying this is more than just an entertainment tool?"
Sylvester nodded, his gaze filled with determination. "Absolutely. We've seen glimpses of the immense impact virtual technology can have, but the VIRTUS system takes it to a whole new level. It's a tool for exploration, innovation, and understanding. We can unlock untapped potential, traverse uncharted territories, and push the boundaries of human imagination."
Sophia took a deep breath, contemplating the magnitude of the VIRTUS system's potential. She realised that, despite her concerns, this was an opportunity to reshape the world in ways they couldn't have imagined before.
"I suppose we have to take risks to achieve progress," she finally conceded, a sense of excitement flickering in her eyes. "Let's make sure we're prepared for any challenges that may arise. The future awaits, and with the VIRTUS system, we'll be at the forefront of this revolution."
Sylvester smiled, appreciating Sophia's resilience and open-mindedness. "Exactly, Sophia. The world is about to witness something extraordinary."
Both of them knew for a fact, inside their heart, that the age of transhumanism is drawing near.
In a dimly lit room of an undisclosed location, a team of agents gathered around a conference table, their expressions a mix of frustration and urgency. Papers were scattered haphazardly across the surface, revealing the depth of their research and the gaps left by a missing asset.
Director Harris, a seasoned veteran with a stern gaze, leaned forward, his voice laced with frustration. "We can't afford to fall behind on this, gentlemen. Losing our asset in Japan has set us back significantly. We need to find a way to catch up and gain the edge we once had."
Agent Rodriguez, a tech specialist known for his resourcefulness, rubbed his temples wearily. "Director, we've exhausted all our leads. Our intel network is scrambling to find a replacement asset, but it's not easy to replace the lost data."
Agent Stevens, a skilled field operative, interjected with a sense of urgency. "Our adversaries are moving forward, and we risk falling further behind. We need a breakthrough."
Agent Lawson, an intelligence analyst leaned back in his chair, his gaze fixed on the papers before him. "Gentlemen, we have to consider all options. Our asset might be gone, but there are others out there. We need to expand our scope of research and find those who can fill the void left by our loss."
The room fell silent, the weight of the task at hand hanging in the air. The team knew that time was of the essence, and they couldn't afford to let their research lag behind any longer. The virtual landscape was evolving, and they needed to regain their foothold.
Director Harris nodded, his expression firm. "Agreed. It's time to cast a wider net, explore new avenues, and identify potential individuals who can propel us forward. We'll need a rigorous vetting process, but we can't let bureaucracy impede our progress."
The team knew that reclaiming their position at the forefront of virtual research required relentless effort and a willingness to play beyond the dichotomy of good-versus-evil morality. Their YGGDRASIL research might be lost, but the mission to stay ahead was far from over.
