AN: Part of the Kadam Week 2023 prompt 2: His voice had never sounded so cold
It was one of those things everyone knew.
The sky was blue, NYADA was a school made of sharks, the Adam's Apples were a bunch of losers, Lima kids would always stick together and Adam Crawford was too infatuated and a polite fool to ever do something against Kurt's friends.
That was what Rachel kept repeating to Santana over and over again.
The problem was that the latina wasn't so sure that the British man would take kindly the fact that the lunch he left for Kurt had been eaten by everyone except the one it was intended for.
That the little diva had then proceeded to eliminate any trace of the wrongdoing made Santana have chills running down her spine.
The fact was that since doctor Who entered Porcelain's life she was able to see glimpses of the fire that used to burn in his eyes. Not to mention the HBC attitude and brass ball of the guy who had no problem in wearing a corset to school and look down at his bullies.
Which in return meant that Kurt was less and less willing to be walked over and bend backwards to satisfy Rachel Berry's wishes and whims just for the sake of keeping the pace.
At first glance the offense wasn't such a big one, and some would certainly side with them in thinking and saying that the reaction was almost too extreme.
All in all it was just a basket of baked goods that got misplaced.
And Santana was more than willing to hold that position. Except that she knew deep down that the specific episode was merely the last in a long line.
Line that kept including inviting the other hobbit over in an attempt to pressure Kurt into forgiving the little cheater.
Not that she had a leg to stand on that front. But at least she had always owned it.
She certainly never tried to blame others for it.
So in a way gel helmet was able to rub her in the wrong ways still…
She had a feeling the graciousness of Kurt's new boyfriend would not last for much longer.
And boys she was right. For three consecutive days Adam Crawford popped up at the loft leaving a considerable meal expressively for Kurt.
The first day he said it in voice, the second day he left a card and on the third day he both left the written note and made sure to say it was for Kurt to both her and to the little diva.
And for three day straight Rachel Berry eaten it up with reassurances that Kurt would never mind that they had almost been in laws and that the base of their friendship was about taking care of each other.
Santana might have caved in the first day, tiredness and the delicious small were a really bad combination to attempt boundaries.
But on the second day she started staying clear, this smelled too much like a set up. Especially when Kurt returned home just as tired as she was and got lied to his face about the care package.
The third day was when everything took a sour turn. When Kurt entered the loft he was not alone, but Adam stayed back half hidden in the doorway. When Berry dished out her practically perfected lie about the food Adam took a step forward into the loft.
"Care to repeat that? Because we talked earlier on and I made sure to deliver the basket, which you had not even had the courtesy to return after eating the food that wasn't yours."
His voice had never sounded so cold, and Berry clearly did not thought there would be consequences. However when he turned to Kurt his voice became softer and warmer "I know how much you cherish the loft and how you started this place all on your own, but can you see now why I and the rest of the apples would feel so much better knowing you were somewhere else? Somewhere closer to both school and work? It doesn't have to be with me but clearly in here your things do not seem safe."
That rebuke made Santana look around the loft and realize for the first time that many of the most expensive possession Kurt owned, like the sawing machine, where nowhere to be seem.
A quick look at Kurt revealed only a sad disappointed expression on his face. Like this was all a test, one he had expected them to fail.
One that they both had failed, Berry by her own action, but Santana herself by her own inaction. They had screwed up and she knew it, they all knew it.
Kurt simply shook his head. His tone was gentle and soft "Nonsense Adam, I wouldn't have asked you to hold my sewing machine if I hadn't already planned to accept your offer of living together. I had simply thought that I could have left the loft on a better note. But what it's done it's done"
The situation was finally starting to dawn on little miss diva, but as usual it was too little too late.
"What do you mean? Kurt? You know I love you and I care for you"
Santana could not tell if the snort came from Kurt or Adam, but Berry certainly took it as the cue needed to start the waterfalls and sobbing.
Looking at that pitiful performance she started to wonder if Berry had always been so pathetic or if it was this specific situation that made her look so bad and ineffective.
Santana couldn't help herself and whistled at that "That's a good one Doctor Who."
All her cheering did however was turning the newly found Ice King's ires in her direction "You shouldn't look that smug Santana, it's not like you've been any better. You could have done something when you saw what was happening and you didn't. I do not understand whether this is a midwestern small town mentality, something in Lima's water or if you're all a bunch of really bad friends. But I find it baffling that any of you can claim whatever this behavior is, friendship, Especially doing so with a straight face."
The accusation stung, especially because it was true. Santana's jaw contracted but she had to use all her stubbornness to not lower her eyes at the just barb.
Kurt stepped beside Adam placing a hand on his shoulder in a calming and soothing gesture. One that Santana saw just how well it worked, it spoke of the closeness and intimacy between the two men. "Let's go for now, Rachel, Satan I'll come back for the last of my things during the next week or so, after that I'll warn the superintended that I won't renew my lease on the loft. Remember that you both will have to talk to him about taking over the lease or you'll be kicked out in two weeks when the contract's over."
After having said his piece, Kurt turned around and led Adam out of the door. Berry was still going on with her theatrics, but Santana had learned long ago to just ignore her.
As Adam and Kurt left she couldn't stop one last smirk and another appreciative whistle "All hails the Ice Kings, well done on the upgrade your highness."
The half chuckled half snort sound accompanied by a mocking raised hand salute was all Santana needed, to know she and Kurt were still okay.
