Two hours had passed since the Covention started and Olivier and Steve had decided to get something to eat in the mesh hall.
As Olivier ate he looked around at his surroundings.
He watched as a member of the abomination coven created a monster out of abomination goo.
How a pair of construction coven members lifted up a whole bench of audience members
and how the cooks made the food move on its own.
As he watched this all happen around him he felt kinda bummed out that he himself couldn't do magic.
He looked down at his wooden bird. Without the help of magic it just laid in his hands.
Useless.
"What's the matter?" Steve asked before taking a bite from his cheeseburger when he noted Olivier's shift in attitude.
"Looking at all these people makes me sad I can't do magic," Olivier explained.
"Aha, I see," Steve said with understanding as he too looked around him. "I wouldn't worry too much about it. The people here are some of the best of the best witches in the Boiling Isles. The average witch can't do most of this stuff either."
"You think so?" Olivier asked.
"Believe me, when I was young I had some classmates that could barely do any magic and they ended up just fine," Steve reassured the young. "Not being able to do magic is no dealbreaker. I mean the Emperor's coven mostly uses artificial staffs."
"If you say so…" Olivier dipped his fry into the ketchup.
"How about we go back home?" Steve suggested. "If we stay any longer, people might start to miss you."
"Sure…"
Before the pair could leave however, someone approached them.
"Mom?" Steve asked.
"Stevie," The witch said happily. "I knew it was you. Who is the little guy with you?"
"Oh this is the kid of a colleague," Steve explained. "I promised her to watch over him."
"Ooooooooh a sheeeee!" Steve's mom squealed. "Is she nice?"
"Mom," Steve sighed deeply. "It's nothing like that..."
As Steve's mom was interrogating Steve about this mysterious female colleague, Olivier felt a need to pee.
"Steve?" Olivier whispered.
"Yeah," Steve replied.
"I need to pee."
Steve looked between his mom and Olivier.
"Just go quickly, I'll be here when you're done."
"Thanks." Olivier hurried towards the bathroom.
Olivier stepped out of the bathroom and looked around as he was about to make his way back to Steve who was still being interrogated by his mom.
It was then that he saw two girls walking by.
One had shoulder length brunette hair with a topknot while the other girl had shorter hair that was kept from falling in front of her glasses by a headband.
"Wow you got cool eyes!" The girl the top knot said as they stopped in front of Oliver.
"I was born with them?" Olivier replied a bit flustered.
"They're like a sun and a moon," The girl with glasses added as she got closer to Olivier.
"That's what my momma always says." Olivier replied.
"My name is Amity." Amity offered Olivier a hand. "And this here is my best friend, Willow."
Olivier accepted Amity's handshake. "I'm Ollie."
"You seem a upset," Willow said with a sad expression. "What's wrong?"
Olivier bit his lip as his gaze went to the floor.
"You don't have to tell us," Willow said when she noted Olivier apprehension.
"It's just…" Olivier tugged at his hood. "It's just that I'm a bit bummed out about not being able do magic."
The two girls' expression went from curious to smiling kindly.
"Don't worry about that," Willow said. "Me and Ami don't have our magic yet either."
"Yeah!" Amity pumped her fists confidently. "I'm sure all three of us will have our magic soon enough."
Olivier smiled back at the two kind girls.
"And then we'll be able to attend Hexside!" Amity added. "Just like my brother and sister."
"They're the whole reason Ami and I are here." Willow explained.
"Yeah?" Olivier inquired.
"They're here to look at all the Covens they could, and I decided to bring my best friend along." Amity and Willow pushed their faces together. "I don't need to see the Covens, because when I'm big, I'm going to join the Emperor's Coven!"
"That's cool!" Olivier spoke. "My momma is in the emperor's Coven too."
"Really!?" Amity squealed. "Can we meet her!?"
"No!" Olivier exclaimed.
"Why not?" Willow asked.
"My… My momma can't know I'm here," Olivier explained.
"Oh… I see," Amity looked sadly at the floor.
Suddenly, in an attempt to change the subject, Willow pointed at a stand that was filled with all kinds of practice wands.
"Look! They're showing off wands," Willow called out. "Maybe they'll let us try them. Let us feel a bit magical."
"That's sounds like fun," Amity agreed before looking at Olivier. "You want to come with us?"
Olivier briefly looked in Steve's direction and saw he was still talking to his mom.
He supposed Steve wouldn't mind Olivier being away for a little while longer.
"Sure."
The trio of kids approached the training wand vendor and took a gander at the practice wands.
There were a great assortment of wands.
While the most commonly used wands were practice wands that were used by students to practice spells before they're were able to cast spells on their own.
There were also wands with longer lasting batteries for those that were fully matured, but yet were magically impaired in someway or another. Whether that be through overuse of the bilesac in the past or having been cursed into losing their magical abilities.
"You want to try one?" The vendor owner asked the group as he noted them staring in absolute fascination at the wands.
"Uh yeah." Olivier replied.
The vendor grabbed some of the wands and handed them to the tree kids.
Amity was the first to attempt a spell, having already had plenty of lessons about spells at home before. She moved the wand in a circular motion causing a magenta halo of light to appear before a small burst of fireworks popped out of the wand.
"That was amazing Ami!" Willow excitedly clasped her hands together.
"Now you try it, Willow." Amity encouraged her friend with a bright smile.
Willow gulped before unsurely moving the wand in a circular motion just like Amity had done before her. A slightly crooked green spell circle appeared from the wand and then suddenly a beautiful plant grew from a pot that stood on the vendor's counter.
Willow couldn't help but beam proudly at her accomplishment.
"Great job, Willow," Amity cheered before looking at Olivier. "Your turn Ollie."
Olivier looked nervously at the wand before looking at the two girls that were giving him encouraging looks.
Taking a deep breath, Olivier moved the wand in a circular motion.
Only for nothing to happen.
Confused, Olivier looked at the wand, before shaking it around a bit, hitting it in his palm in the his palm in the hopes for it to start working.
"Don't worry about that," The vendor reassured as he took the wand away from Olivier. "Sometimes it takes a while for a wand to make a connection with its user."
He then handed Olivier another wand.
Olivier barely moved the wand and it immediately shot out a blast of magic that happened to hit the potted plant that Willow had created shattering it into little pieces.
The Vendor grimaced before once again taking the wand away from Olivier.
"That one might've been too sensitive for your magic levels," The vendor pondered as he looked through his boxes before finding what he was searching for. "But this one might do it."
The vendor handed Olivier the wand, it was a fancy black wand with a specially made handle.
"These types of wands tend to used by some of the best of the best witches in the Boiling Isles," The vendor explained. "Most people that end up in the Emperor's Coven train with these wands. Give it a try."
Olivier looked unsurely at the wand before moving the wand in a circular motion. He closed his eyes too afraid to come face to face with the reality that he'd never be able to do magic and embarrass himself in front of the first friends he had ever made.
"Wow!" Amity exclaimed in amazement.
"That looks so pretty!" Willow said.
Olivier opened his eyes when he heard the girls and felt excitement fill up in his heart when he saw what he produced.
It was a spell circle. But it didn't only have one colour, but three. A light blue, a light yellow and a light pink. He stared at the circle in pure awe.
He wished his mother could've been here to see this.
Then he remembered a spell his mom had once showed off before and moved his wand in a counter clockwise motion causing the ring to do the same.
Amity and Willow watched in amazement as the flower pot that Olivier had destroyed before began repairing itself before it returned to its previous state.
Olivier grabbed the point and handed it to Willow, who smiled at the gesture.
"Very impressive," The Vendor said with a hearty laugh. "Seems like you might have a future in the Emperor's coven."
"Great!" Amity pulled Olivier closer. "We're going to be Coven buddies!"
Olivier smiled brightly at that idea.
"Future Emperor's Coven candidates Amity Blight and Ollie…" Amity stopped in her tracks before looking at Olivier. "What is your name again?"
Before Olivier could answer another blast of pastel colours burst from his wand. Causing the wooded bird that Olivier had put in his pocket to spring back to life.
Though unlike with what happened with when the woodcarver had brought it to life, this time the bird shot chaotically through the convention hall overcharged by Olivier's magic.
Then it flew out of the exit door.
"My bird!" Olivier exclaimed before he hurried after it quickly yelling to Amity and Willow a "I'll see you two later," before exiting the convention center.
Leaving Amity and Willow behind in confusion.
Steve massaged his temples as his mom was going on and on with badgering him about this potential nice girlfriend he could have.
He decided enough was enough.
"Mom please stop," Steve sighed. "I do really like this woman, but she isn't really interested in relationships, so there's nothing going to happen between us. Plus her being my superior would just make things morally questionable."
"Superior?" Steve's mom repeated before connecting the dots. "Oooh you like Lilith Clawthorn?! That sweet boy was her son? I didn't know she had kids."
"Yes! But no one is allowed to know about Oli-" Steve stopped to look around, dread kicking in when he realized Olivier was nowhere to be around.
Oh crap.
Lilith was going to murder him.
"Mom, it was nice seeing you," Steve stood up from his chair. "But I need to go. Tell Matt that I give him my regards"
"Oh! Of course," the sound of Steve's mom faded as she was barely able to sputter as Steve hurried away.
Olivier ran through the streets of Bonesborough, making sure that his hood stayed on as he followed the wooden bird.
Unlike at the Covention, which was filled with witches, the city at the moment was filled almost exclusively with less humanoid creatures.
And they all looked very scary.
He tried his best to keep distance and not make contact with them whenever he needed to get close to one.
The bird started to lose steam and flew into an alleyway, Olivier followed after it.
He stopped for a brief moment at the start of the dark ominous alley before gathering up all the courage he had in his small body and walked into the dark alley wrapping himself up in the cloak Steve had given him.
As he walked into the alley he noted the high amount of wanted posters. All types of criminals were on display.
One that stuck out was one of the Owl Lady. His mother had told him about the Owl Lady a few times.
She had told him how a very bad person had cursed the owl lady.
These posters and the fact that the alley Olivier was in was becoming darker and darker was really starting to make him anxious.
What if one of these monsters captured him? What if they put him on a ship that sailed out to the great unknown? Never to be seen again.
What if he never saw his mom ever again!?
Olivier felt his breathing increase as he thought about the possibility of never seeing Lilith again.
The first time he'd have disobeyed her orders and he'd be punished for it.
She'd probably think it'd be proper punishment.
Tears began to sting in his eyes as he kept thinking about what his mom would think if she knew that he had gone outside of the castle.
What if they all got petrified by Uncle Belos, just like he did to everyone else that disobeyed his orders.
His panicking was briefly stopped when he caught a glimpse of his wooden bird on the ground.
He quickly hurried over to it and picked it up.
Right about when he was going to exit the alley a voice suddenly made Olivier go a stiff as a board.
"Well, well, well, look at what we got here," I big red monster with a ginormous mouth on his stomach stepped into the light.
"I-i-i'm s-s-sorry…" Olivier stammered as he backed away from the monster aiming his wand at the monster before realizing the wand was out of battery. "I-i-i d-din-din-didn't mean to."
"Ya think ya can come on my turf and just get away?" The monster growled. "You witches think ya can get away with anything, don'tcha?"
"N-no!" Olivier tried to reason. "I-i didn't know this belonged to you!"
"WELL GUESS IT'S TIME TO TEACH YOU A LITTLE LESSON, WITCHLETT!"
The monster grabbed Olivier by his cloak with his huge hand and moved him closer to his stomach mouth.
Olivier struggled with all his might but couldn't escape from the monster's grasp and the only thing he could think to do was to cry out. "MOMMA!"
It was then that a yellow energy blast hit the monster straight in the chest. Causing him to drop Olivier and fly into the wall that was at the end of the alley.
"How about you pick on someone your own size, Bozo!" And unfamiliar voice sounded.
Olivier looked up and saw a figure towering over him.
A woman with wild orange hair, with white streaks in it, a mischievious look in her eyes and a wooden staff that had an owl as it's pallisman.
"You alright kiddo?" The woman asked as she offered Olivier a hand.
"Y-yeah," Olivier, a bit shaken up took the woman's hand. "T-thanks for helping me."
"No biggie, kid," the woman brushed him off. "These neighbourhoods can get dangerous."
"I didn't mean to come here," Olivier explained to the woman before showing off his wooden bird. "My little birdie flew into this alleyway."
"Consider yourself yourself lucky that I was here to save your butt," The woman spoke. "I doubt Prissy Lily would like it if her boy ended up being a snack for some Bonesborough lowlife"
"You know my momma?" Olivier asked in amazement.
"Know her? I know her alright," The woman chuckled. "Your momma is my big sister."
"Really?" Olivier looked with wide eyes at the woman.
"I've been wanting to meet you for a while, Olivier." the woman grinned at Olivier. "The name's Eda. Eda Clawthorn"
Another chapter of Son of Lilith and another bunch of things to be introduced.
Firstly is the introduction of Amity and Willow! Who at this point are still friends, but soon enough will lose their friendship. For now I wanted a sweet moment between the three characters before they get their magic.
Then there's the introduction of wands. A concept in the show that appeared in one episode that I really liked. So I decided to expand upon it a little bit. (and yes, the sequence of Olivier trying to find the right wand is a reference to Harry Potter.)
I also wanted to show off that Olivier's magic is already unique before the big outburst. the colors are in fact a reference the colors the Collector's magic is.
Then we have the fact that in my canon Steve does have a crush on Lilith. But just doesn't act upon his feelings out of respect for Lilith.(I just think that ship is cute.)
and Finally we get Eda's first appearance. An important thing is that Olivier knows Eda is cursed. He however doesn't know who the curser was. (Though Lilith did make sure to call the curser a bad person as indication that she feels bad about it.)
