Chapter One

1.1

Kuon stared ahead at the floor as he sat in the doctor's examination room. He had come two weeks prior to get checkups and finally he had made an appointment to discuss the results. It was unexpected and fortunately this was a doctor that Lory trusted and Kuon knew had the utmost privacy.

"I don't understand," he said slowly as he frowned trying to concentrate on this. "How?"

"Well, there are multiple ways to contract illnesses. Even if you use the upmost care and dedication to diet and exercise, it can still happen. Of course, you usually only see this illness when there have been years of starvation such as those who have been shipwrecked or are in situations of neglect."

The doctor showed Kuon a list of his blood results and sighed. "We can treat this and the chances are on your side for near full recovery with the right medications and treatment. There might have to be a surgery scheduled in a few months, but this can't be corrected," the doctor said as he pointed to one of the results.

Kuon stared at him again. "That's what I don't understand. Isn't a metabolism supposed to be somewhat genetic or hereditary, one of the two. If you knew how much my father ate…or, no, both of my parents. If you saw them eat and then the fact that they model."

"Yes," the doctor said slowly. "In the majority of cases, family history and genetics can play a part in metabolism but your stomach has been severely…in layman's terms, broken. Your stomach is broken and that's what has caused this to happen."

"So, you'd tell someone who was anorexic that they were going to just gain weight with an increased appetite because of an illness?" Kuon asked. The twenty-seven year old rubbed his neck as he felt uncomfortable about this.

Yes, gaining weight and having an increased appetite wasn't the worst thing in the world but it just wasn't him. He was an Academy Award winning Hollywood actor who had come back to work in Japan for the sake of his wife. He was once again, the top actor in Japan and this time under his real name. He wasn't supposed to be someone who might risk buying plus sized clothing.

"Hizuri-san, first of all, most anorexics do gain weight faster but they don't have an illness like this. In fact, with how broken your stomach is and the other symptoms you're facing, I'm surprised that you're alive. I'm surprised that the tumor we found wasn't either septic or cancerous but there could be the chance of cancer in your blood which we'll test for next."

"Isn't cancer and the associated medical treatment meant to make you lose weight though," Kuon asked as he tried to wrap his mind around this. "It's not as if it's a pregnancy. It's not as if I'm taking estrogen or something. This shouldn't be happening."

"It's very uncommon, rare, even," the doctor told him, "however, if you do want to treat this you are going to have to come to terms with the fact that the medicine and further treatment will have you gain weight and the speed of which that will happen is unknown at the present time."

Kuon took a deep breath, "and if I refuse the treatment. If I refuse to gain weight."

"Then you will have a good risk of dying," the doctor said gravely. "But I can't force you to receive treatment so think it over carefully, discuss things with those close to you, give me a call when you're ready to discuss further steps. Is there anything else that you want to talk about today?"

Kuon stood, looking pale before shaking his head. "Can I just get a hard copy of all the medical documentation?" he asked and the doctor nodded.

"Give me a moment to get that all prepared for you."

"Here," Lory said as he handed Kuon a glass of water as the twenty-seven-year-old stared blankly ahead, looking like a ghost. "So, as you know, I invited you here to discuss the doctor's appointment. I know that you're a great Hollywood star now but I'm still glad that you asked to work at LME again."

"Kyoko prefers Japan," Kuon shrugged, "and I know that as fantastic an actor as she is, her roles in Hollywood are limited and she prefers acting in Japan. She has been ranked Japan's best actress numerous times." He laughed weakly before bowing his head and pushing a hand through his hair. "So, that's why it's best for me to step out of the picture."

"Literally or metaphorically?" Lory asked as Kuon chuckled uneasily. "Is it cancer?" he asked and Kuon looked up at him. "Some kind of brain disease? Early onset dementia?" Kuon looked down at the floor. "I mean, you don't have to tell me but -"

"They found some kind of developed tumor in my gut," Kuon said and Lory leaned in. "Apparently it started with an ulcer that had been manifesting for years and something happened to somehow turn an ulcer into a tumor."

"Cancerous?" Lory asked gravely.

"They're testing it. They don't think so but the cancerous ones are more prevalent," Kuon shrugged. "They were very confident in a treatment plan that might stop it from getting too serious but I'm not sure about the side effects of it. I'm not sure if you'd even allow me to continue acting with them."

Lory hummed. "I doubt that, Kuon," he told him. "You're my best male actor by far and a family friend, although don't think I'm buying into the nepotism. "So, what will be affected? Your voice? Your energy level? Your ability to travel internationally?"

"My metabolism and my appetite," Kuon said as he saw Lory's confusion.

"Your…metabolism and your appetite," the president said slowly as if he had heard correctly. Kuon nodded. "So, in order for you to stay alive, you'd hypothetically have to gain weight?" he asked and Kuon sighed and nodded. "Enough weight that it would be noticeable?" he asked and Kuon sighed before nodding with his head bowed. "You, who just won an Academy Award for Best Leading Actor as well as many less prestigious awards are scared that LME is going to toss you out onto the street for gaining weight."

Kuon sighed and pushed his hand through his blond hair. "I know how competitive it is in this country. I know that I'm known for a certain look and level of attractiveness. I know that R Mandy would not renew the same contract with me were they to learn of this or the modeling agency I'm with internationally. I know that I'm letting you down, letting everyone down by this."

"Well, you are correct on a few things there," Lory said and Kuon exhaled, letting his shoulders fall. "The modeling contracts probably wouldn't renew the same contracts as they have now. That's not to say they wouldn't want to work with you or have other companies that wouldn't want to work with you under their umbrella. And the other thing is, yes, you are letting me down."

"I know, you accepted me back into this agency to accept certain-" Kuon paused as he saw the annoyance in Lory's expression. "Boss?"

"You're an idiot," Lory told him bluntly. "You have a way of treating a very serious illness before it gets worse. You have away to escape death by going through medical treatment for a period of maybe a year, two years, but a significantly short percentage of your life nonetheless and you're thinking of throwing it all away because of weight gain. To even imagine that the people in your life won't love and support you in any way we possibly could just because you might gain what, one hundred, two hundred pounds, that's where you're letting us down."

"One hundred and seventy is what they predict, well up to that number," Kuon flinched.

"Okay. You gain up to one hundred and seventy pounds. That's noticeable but I highly doubt that with the active lifestyle that you lead and how Kyoko, obviously, will be monitoring your diet to make sure that you're as healthy as possible, maybe it will only be seventy pounds. You could stand to gain some weight anyway. The whole Hizuri family is too skinny anyway."

Lory looked at Kuon and saw the horror wash over his face before he turned silent and looked down at his lap. He looked up as Lory flicked him in the forehead.

"You are not going to leave her," Lory told him and Kuon opened his mouth to speak. "I want you to tell her today and then I want for you to talk to the doctor first thing in the morning and schedule treatment. We will deal with the results and symptoms as they come up but we all collectively raised you better than for you to even consider leaving her."

Kuon opened his mouth to say something and then sighed, "Of course you can read minds."

"Kyoko will adore you if you're one hundred and forty pounds or three hundred and forty pounds," Lory told him and Kuon shifted. "You'll also be welcomed to continue to act for LME. We love you, as our family, Kuon, even if you fail to find that same love for yourself. In fact, because I don't trust you,"

Lory picked up his phone and called the main desk asking them to call Kyoko and invite her to the office. Kuon stared at him with a dropped jaw. "Do you think I don't know Kyoko has taken time off from work whilst you're at the doctor's office because she can't work from the stress that causes her. She loves you. That woman would do anything for you. This doesn't change a thing."

1.3

Half an hour later, an extremely beautiful twenty-three-year-old Kyoko Hizuri was knocking on the office door. She had long naturally black hair but since she could afford all of the best makeup and clothes, she was her most beautiful. Well, Kuon still thought that she was most beautiful without the makeup but maybe that was because he truly loved her unconditionally.

Yes, if she ballooned up, he would love her too. He just hated that he wouldn't be able to run from this.

"President," Kyoko bowed as she saw him before her eyes went to the very pale blond whose hair looked completely messed up with how many times he had pushed his fingers through it with stress. "Kuon?" She took a deep breath in before coming over to him and taking his hand in hers, squeezing it. "Spill," she instructed as she looked between them.

"I have a tumor in my gut," Kuon told her and Kyoko's breath caught in her throat.

"I always said that your stomach was broken," she said as she looked forwards. "Surgery? That's usually what can happen with tumors, they get cut out, right?"

"Yes, but I'm not sure I want to go through with it." Kuon hesitated as he looked down.

"Because of the pain?" Kyoko asked before rubbing Kuon's shoulder. "You're the strongest person that I know. Sure, there may be lingering pain but there must be medicine that will help with that and I'll do anything that I can to make it hurt less. Don't use that as a reason."

"It's not the pain that I'm worried about," Kuon sighed, "It's…"

"We have plenty of savings," Kyoko told him. "I know that. You insisted that we have a joint bank account so I know how much is in it. Whatever the cost of the procedure then it's worth it so you can be healthy again. I know that you've been sufferi-"

"It's not money," Kuon sighed and Kyoko blinked as she turned to him.

"Sho—short—tened life expectancy?" she asked as her eyes glimmered with tears. She took a deep and shaky inhale, "O—okay. Okay. That's…that's fine…any time that I get to spend with you, Corn, I want to have as much as possible. It's okay," she told him. "It's okay."

"No. I'd have the regular life expectancy," he said and Kyoko steadied herself. "Weight gain." He announced and Kyoko sat there before looking at him, wiping her eyes with a handkerchief he had given her as a gift.

"Huh?" she blinked as she looked at him completely bewildered and questioning if she had heard him correctly. "Are you saying that you have a chance of getting leukemia?" she asked before taking a deep breath in. "Okay. Okay. We can handle that. Leukemia is able to go into remission."

"I don't know what you heard but I don't think I have leukemia," Kuon told her.

Kyoko choked as she laughed nervously. "I assumed you said white veins," she laughed uncomfortably due to her worry. "And that made me think of leukocytes and…and I don't know what blood disorders there are other than."

"What did you hear?" Lory asked and Kyoko turned to him. "What were the words you heard?"

"We-weight gain," Kyoko choked again. She looked up nervously at Lory as he nodded and she stood before smacking Kuon across the forehead and he looked at her stunned. "You're - you're afraid to get tre-treatment because they tell you you'll gain weight!?" she yelled at him before attempting to calm down. "I always am proud of how intelligent my husband is. I always agree with Father when he says that about you to everyone. How can you be such an idiot?!"

"Kyoko," Kuon sighed, "Look at how beau-"

"You're being so stupid and irrational and it's pissing me off, Corn. The only thing that's stopping me from hitting you again is that I know you're physically ill. You have a chance to take medical treatment to keep you alive, you take it. Do you honestly think that I'd be ashamed at ever being seen next to you?"

Kuon looked at her and sighed, "Yes. If I'm over three hundred pounds, yes."

"I don't care if you weigh FIVE HUNDRED pounds!" Kyoko yelled at him. "Other than wanting to protect your health and keep you alive. I promised myself not to fall in love with the wrong person and I didn't. So, I don't care how much you weigh or what people might think of me. I love you. You're Corn."

"Kyoko, can you even imagine the optics," Kuon tried to reason with her and Kyoko glared at him.

"Kuon, if you don't do the medical treatment, I will never forgive you for breaking my heart."

Kuon looked at her for a while not speaking before looking down and nodding. "Only if you promise to tell me to leave if I become unattractive to you."

Kyoko stood with her fists at her side. "Fine. Mainly because, you idiot, you will never become unattractive to me. This doesn't stop you from being my husband. You're Kuon. You'll always be Kuon."
