A/N: Hey guys! I've been trying to get back into writing and it's been a real challenge lol. I sort of know where I want this story to go, but I still need to work out the chronology and things. I haven't polished any of my drafts yet either lol so hope you can bear with me. Knowing myself, I'll probably write the chapters loosely tied to each other so I don't stress too much about the timeline.
Hopefully the next chapters will give you an idea of what I'm going for with the characters and their relationships with each other. Feel free to leave prompts whenever. No promises but I'll be happy to try and work it into the story. I often struggle with motivation and inspiration, so I can always use a little help from friends :)

There are two types of girls who sit at the café.
"He looks cute, Mina!"
"I know, right? He also goes to the same school as Mamoru."
"Whaaat! We have to go on a double date sometime!"
"Oh for sure!"
The girls who are obsessed with boys.
"Rei, this part here needs to be divided by the coefficient to get the variable by itself."
"Did I not do that?"
"It's not —"
"Sorry, Ami, just a second. Can you guys keep it down over there and let Ami concentrate?"
And the girls who try to get the girls obsessed with boys to shut up. (They also happen to be the girls who regularly do their homework.)
Rei is unfailingly the latter.
It's Monday morning and she already feels the urge to go to some secluded mountain and meditate, itching for some peace and quiet. Unfortunately, the blonde twins have decided that today was a good day to not be late for once, prompted by Minako texting them all last night that she has news to share before school. Of course, it turns out to be about a boy. God forbid they're late for that.
Minako groans and leans even more towards her side of the table with Usagi and Makoto to show them more pictures of her latest crush.
"You need to meet him, Usagi! Mina introduced him to me and Ami yesterday. We love him!" Makoto starts raving.
Rei swears that, next to her, she hears Ami say under her breath "love is a little strong" while seemingly flipping through math textbooks. Rei hides a smile. It's comforting to know there is someone else here who isn't totally insane.
"He's so handsome! He even gave us flowers! And he wasn't intimidated by how tall I was. That's a real man, if you ask me," Makoto continues.
Rei sighs. Is this guy dating Minako? Or Makoto? Who even knows anymore.
"No way! You have a shirtless picture of him!" Usagi squeals a few decibels too high.
"Volume. Please." Rei feels herself getting more and more irritated. She can't afford any distractions.
The other girls have the convenience of asking Ami to help them blitz through missed homework at recess or lunch (and secretly copying each other's work). Rei, however, doesn't go to the same school as the rest of them, so she doesn't have the luxury of Ami's services all day. Whenever she can, she gets Ami to check her homework in the morning when the girls sometimes meet up at their favorite café before school.
"Rei, look!" Usagi just about shoves the shirtless picture in her face.
Reflexively, Rei jerks away in aversion. She does find herself doing a double take and glancing at the picture again; for despite all her reservations about men, he is objectively good-looking. And yet...
"He looks like an asshole," she blurts out bluntly.
"What did you say?" Minako interjects. She'd been minding her own business until Rei hit a nerve.
"He looks like an asshole," Rei repeats matter-of-factly.
"I heard you the first time!"
Rei crosses her arms and shakes her head. Honestly, she thinks. It's like talking to a rock.
Minako snatches the picture back from Usagi who has completely forgotten that she's still holding it up in Rei's face, gawking at her two friends arguing.
The tension is building but the table gets quiet and Rei tries not to look too pleased about that.
"Okay, what about him looks like an asshole? You don't even know him." Minako doesn't let it go.
Rei sighs. Five more minutes of this then.
It's not new. The girls get into squabbles about boys occasionally, mostly because Rei scoffs at the subject and she gets outnumbered. It eventually blows over and they all move on and forget about it. At the end of the day, it's not that deep.
"Mina, he looks exactly like all the other assholes you've dated." Rei can't figure it out but there is something about the guy. Perhaps it's her sixth sense telling her something. To be fair, based on Mina's history with men, they can only be either an asshole or a monster.
"He kind of does..." Ami concurs quietly.
Thank you! And just like that, the debate is over before it's even begun.
A look of defeat briefly flashes on Minako's face. She knows there's hardly room for argument when Ami agrees on something. Rei doesn't think with her feelings because she refuses to feel; Ami doesn't think with her feelings because she's all about the facts.
But Minako is not about to let Rei get away with all that smug satisfaction.
"I'm still going to keep seeing him, you know!"
"I didn't say you weren't allowed to date him."
"Fine. You know what, I'm going to do just that. In fact, I'm going to date the shit out of him."
"Mina, stop caring about what I think and just do whatever you want to do. I really don't care."
"Okay, okay!" Makoto physically wedges herself into the middle of the table, separating the two groups. "Switzerland! Switzerland! Coming through!"
"Where?" Usagi snaps to attention, looking around cluelessly.
Rei shuts her eyes, pinching the bridge of her nose. Just kill me.
"What is up with you two today? Rei, you're grumpier than usual. And you," Makoto turns to Minako, "why are you grumpy all of a sudden?"
"I mean, let's face it. Men are pointless, and she doesn't have the best taste in them either," Rei says.
"Rei, you're so —! Grrr…" Minako growls. "I'll prove you wrong this time!"
"Alright! Stop, stop!" Makoto gets in between them again before they can keep fighting.
"Looks like you're all set, Rei. You just need to tidy up your solutions a little," Ami interrupts to hand Rei back her homework. How Ami has managed to focus amidst all the nonsense around her, who knows.
"I'll keep that in mind. Thanks, Ami." My savior!
Going to school has never felt more appealing. She has to get out of here.
Flipping her hair over her shoulder as she turns to leave, Rei opts to have the last word.
"Well, that's all the time I have for things that actually matter. Just call me when he breaks your heart."
"I break their hearts, just so you know!" Minako shouts after her.
"Switzerland!"
Legends say Makoto is still yelling.
