I Didn't Choose the Campaign Life
I didn't choose the campaign life,
I'm tired of alien suns.
But at last this war's nearing its end,
We've got the Congloms on the run.
…
For my sins upon the battlefield,
Some tell me I should pray.
But too late for my tattered soul,
All that's left is foes to slay.
…
Months or years since been dispatched,
From Earth, it's been so long.
No way home save victory,
So like all, I slog along.
…
In xeno trenches, no words spoken,
Our fears are left unsaid.
Look upon the Conglom line,
In silence and in dread.
…
Perhaps this world once paradise,
But if so, long been lost.
War's unleashed Hell upon the stars,
And none dare count the cost.
…
The shelling's stopped, the whistle's blown,
Go over top to land of strife.
For this is the lot of all of us,
This is the campaign life.
