Naruto Morgan's Journal
Being cooped up in the winter is really getting on my nerves, the snow storm isn't passing anytime soon, Arthur and Javier have been gone for hours now, I'm getting a little worried. They could've easily lost the trail back with all of this constant snowing. Just hope they make it back since Abigail can't stop pacing up and down the entire cabin.
Naruto wrote in his journal as at that time, Sadie with great interest peaked over his shoulder noticing his entry. "What are you writing?" she questioned as she had a blanket around her, she had finished her coffee and had placed the cup on the stand beside the bed.
"Just my journal." Naruto replied. "You keep a journal? Do you write your feelings in it? You don't seem like the type."
Naruto looked up from his book, and turned to Sadie. "It helps keep me sane." he quiped as Sadie hummed. "I wonder what crazy things you've seen, that you need a book to not become a lunatic."
'You wouldn't want to know.' he thought as he looked back to his book, sighing in defeat as he had nothing else to write, he closed it. At that time Reverend Swanson made his way towards Naruto. "Mr. Morgan I'm gonna need a helping hand with the burial, could you be a helping hand?"
Naruto got up and nodded. "Sure, let's put Davey to rest."
The two we're able to find a coffin in the stables, why was there a coffin there they never knew. Putting Davey's body in, the two men braved the snow as Naruto carried a shovel. They reached the mining place's burial site, a rather slightly packed area with a couple spaces open for new graves.
Naruto got to work, dumping away the snow, time went past and the hole got deeper. With each lift Naruto watched as Reverend Swanson said a prayer, and when he was done Naruto had climbed out of the hole noting that it was enough, the two men lowered Davey's coffin into the ground as Naruto covered it.
Putting his cross there with his name engraved, Swanson made a final prayer.
"...and father even though he was never a good man, please lord forgive him for his sins and allow him into your kingdom." Swanson wrapped up the prayer as he turned to Naruto who shed a little tear. "At least he's not lonely." he quipped seeing as the burial site had a couple graves on it.
"I'm going to return back in the cabin, he would've appreciated what you did for him, Naruto." Swanson put his hand on the blond's shoulder who nodded.
"Can we get some help out here!" Naruto overheard a shout, walking out of the burial and onto the main street of Colter he noticed two horses and three men, from there he could see it was Arthur and Javier, they'd returned safe with John.
Naruto watched as the man was brought of Javier's horse and taken into the cabin, where Abigail was staying. "Well he's probably going to get tough love." Swanson stated as he drank from his hip flask. "What makes you say that?"
"With Abigail Roberts, that poor man is in for a yelling. Doesn't matter if he's injured or not, she'll tear him apart."
"Come on she's not that bad."
"Have you seen how she wears the pants in their family, I'm surprised John stayed with her."
"I mean to be honest, he did leave her and Jack a couple years back, can you really blame her, she thought he was going to be an absent father."
"That is true though, well anyway. I'll see you later Mr. Morgan." Swanson went away as Naruto returned to the stables to rest the shovel by the entrance. The place was well lit by the lantern that rested at the doorway, most of the horses were just fast asleep while others we're still fluttering their eyes as the had a mid night snack of hay.
Naruto watched as one of the horses had their eyes on him, the blond smirked as he approached the horse, petting it on the head. "You miss me that much buddy?" he asked only to receive a neigh. "Yeah but it's only been like two days, Kurama. Is it the cold?" the horse seemed to nod.
"I don't know how you're even complaining seeing as Ambarino is your country." the white Arabian huffed, sure he was born there but that didn't mean he missed the snow. Naruto had searched for days in the cold of Ambarino in search for Kurama, having to scavenge days within the mountains, he was only lucky enough to find him the day it there was a massive snowstorm.
"Though can you blame him? The horses are suffering as much as us." the blond turned to see Charles at the door, the man went up to his horse Taima. " I still think he's acting like a big baby, all that time in West Elizabeth really made you soft." he stated as Kurama huffed and went back to stuffing himself with hay.
"So Charles, how's the hand for far? Is it getting better?"
Charles tried to grip a fist but it still hurt. "Might take a few more days but it's better than yesterday." the pair went back to the main cabin.
The fire needed to be feed with more wood. Naruto holding his axe, went outside and cut down enough logs to last the entire day. Swinging and chomping the wood into slabs was really soothing, and helped relief a lot of stress. Whenever the axe got stuck cutting down halfway he would just bash with more strength to get the result wanted.
"Enjoying yourself I see." huffing and looking through the snow, Naruto could only sigh. "Oh hey pops." Hosea Matthews was like a father Naruto never had, he and Dutch we're like father figures to him, but Hosea was better at it, he seemed like a man easy to open up to.
"Yeah, just making sure everyone stays warm with the time of us being up here." the blond replied as he held the axe in the air. "You wanted something?" he questioned as he brought it down hard breaking the wood. "Nothing really, just wanted to see how you we're holding up since this mess began." Hosea stated as he took the axe from Naruto.
"You think you can handle the weight, with those frail bones, I wouldn't want to nurse you as well back to health." Naruto smirked as Hosea grunted. "Shut up, if I remember correctly I taught you this skill." he stated as Naruto put a log onto the flat stone he had convenietly found.
"That you did."
Hosea did quick work breaking the wood as Naruto took the two sides and placed them in the sack that was already half full. "So what's your take in all of this?" Hosea questioned as Naruto bit his tongue.
"In all honesty, I never thought it'd end up this bad. But here we are, I guess even seasoned thieves won't be lucky with every robbery they do, huh?" he put another log on the rock.
"Yeah, that is true." Hosea cut down another. "So what now exactly?" the blond took the slabs and placed them in the sack. "Dutch says we wait till the thaw, after that we're heading east."
"East? Why east?"
"Well our troubles are in the west unless you want us to face the wrath of Uncle Sam and the Pinkertons." Naruto just sighed in defeat they really did a number in Blackwater and worst part is that they had no part in it.
"It's like as if that ferry job won't stop haunting us. What exactly happened on that boat, pop? I asked Javier but he just said the Pinkertons we're everywhere."
"I asked around but I got the same answer, Dutch just said that it didn't matter anyway, the plan was botched."
"So that scheme we had going on in town, didn't mean anything? It worked like clockwork, Arthur was the muscle, you were the brains and I was the spy. It was the perfect plan, so many newcomers got robbed that day we could've had enough money to go anywhere in the world in a couple months tops."
"I hear you, sonny but you know what they say, every good thing must come to an end." Naruto just sighed as he placed yet another log onto the rock for Hosea to cut down.
"I just want to know if that money was worth it, pop. Like with a little patience we would've gotten the same amount as they had on that boat."
"Well sadly this lot we travel with patience isn't a strong characteristic." he cut down the log. "Where is that money anyway? Did we bring it?"
"No Dutch says he ditched it in Blackwater, said he hid it well."
"I really hope all that money was worth all those lives...damn that Micah. If only he just asked me to do a proper reconnaissance none of this would've happened. He just had to be overconfident and rush it."
"I hear you, Dutch seems to be listening to his suggestions rather easily these days."
"Yeah...just think about how much money we would've gotten with that card scheme."
"That was a good con wasn't it?" Naruto smirked. "It was the greatest con I am proud of being a part of." he stated with pride. "Glad to know you had fun with that. We'll just have to come up with a new one, like we always do." Naruto placed the last log.
"Yeah, I guess." Hosea cut down the last as Naruto took the now full sack as he hoisted it over his shoulder. "Let's go back shall we."
"Sure."
