When Maggie realized she had 3 sisters.
Do You Have A Sister?
"It looks like your heart keeps failing, so we can't do the surgery. I am so sorry," Maggie said, and then she walked out of the patient's room.
One of the patient's family members came to her and said, "Dr. Pierce, I'm sorry, but there has to be another option. Please help her."
"Elli, I know that it's scary, but Kate can't stand the surgery. Her heart is so weak."
"My sister has always been there for me whenever I needed her. She has always protected me and taken care of me. Now it's my turn. I need my big sister; I cannot lose her."
"I understand that, and I promise to do everything I can to help her," Maggie told her calmly.
"You don't get it, Dr. Pierce. Do you have a sister?"
Maggie thought about this question for a few moments.
Meredith was her biological half sister.
Lexie was her sister's sister.
Amelia was her sister's sister in law.
She only met them less than a year ago, they couldn't be her family, but somehow they are.
For most of her childhood, Maggie was lonely. Her own age kids thought she was weird, and she was surrounded by older people all the time. So she didn't have a lot of friends.
She always wanted a sister. A sister that she would love no matter what, a sister that will be there for her and look after her.
Meredith was awful to her at first: she said she was a liar and kept pushing her away. But now she is her big sister that really care about her.
Lexie was the jealous little sister. Meredith was so good to Lexie, and that's hurt Maggie badly, but it's also given her the motivation to try bonding with Meredith. Now Lexie is her sweet and happy little sister that have a lot in common. She had learned to like Mark, and it was not an easy assignment at first, but she knew that Mark is Meredith's brother in law, and that if she wants to have a relationship with Meredith, she will have to accept Mark.
And Amelia, well, Amelia was just the crazy sister in law. Meredith kept pushing her away too at first, so she and Amelia ended up being friends and then sisters.
She thought that a sibling was only someone who had the same parents as yours. But now she knows what it means to take care of someone and protect them like your own child.
But what makes Lexie, Meredith, and Amelia different from her close friends?
Maybe it's the fact that she is staying with them, despite all the amazing job offers that she gets all the time, because she can't leave them. She finally feels at home.
A few months ago, she and Amelia had a huge fight, and in the morning, Amelia acted normal. It was a stupid fight about cleaning the dishes, but it ended up being a fight about. The next morning, she excepted an angry Amelia, but Amelia acted normally. When Maggie asked her about that, she said that it was just a stupid fight that probably wasn't going to be their last one.
They had many fights, but they always made up.
One of her hardest times was when she lost her favorite patient. The patient was a little girl with a heart tumor. Maggie loved that girl- she was smart and funny. She took care of her for six months. But she didn't make the surgery. Maggie took it very hard: she didn't want to go to work, eat, or drink. Derek, Mark, Amelia, and Meredith tried to make her feel better, but Lexie stayed home only to make sure that she was eating and was fine. She let her grieve for a few days, but then she took Maggie on a fun day with the kids to the Luna Park and made her realize that she had to focus on her alive nieces and nephews.
Even when Meredith pushed her away, she always cared, even if she tried her hardest to hide it. Before she and Meredith got close, she told Meredith what her favorite food was, and the next day, Meredith made it for her for dinner.
"Yes. I have 3 sisters."
As a kid, Maggie Pierce wanted a sister, and now she has 3 sisters.
When Maggie got home, she saw Meredith feeding Bailey, Lexie playing a tea party with Zola and Sofia, and Amelia folding laundry.
"A rough day?" Amelia asked.
"Yeah," Maggie responded with a sigh.
"I brought i-c-e c-r-e-a-m. It's in the fridge," Lexie said.
"Why are you spelling?"
"Because today, when I said that word, Zola and Sofia had started crying and screaming for this. Just take it upstairs. I brought all your favorites."
"Where is George?" She asked.
"With Mark. Sofia wanted a play date with Zola, and she wanted to do it with Mimi Lexie," Lexie said proudly.
"Lexie!" Sofia repeated after her stepmom.
"I can't believe she can say my name," she said with excitement, looking at Sofia.
"It happens at age four," Meredith told her with a laugh.
"Am I still not allowed to be excited?"
"Don't listen to her, Lexie, Meredith is just upset because Zola said your name before hers," she told her with a laugh.
Lexie and Amelia laughed too,and Meredith rolled her eyes.
Zola, Bailey, Sofia, and George are her family too. They are her little nieces and nephews.
Maggie loves kids. She always did, but this is different. She loves those kids unconditionally. She even cried when Zola and Sofia called her auntie for the first time after they learned about family members in the daycare. Bailey and George are just babies, but many times she was the only one who could calm them down. She has been in those kids' lives only for less than a year, and still, she loves them so much.
Even Derek and Mark are also her family.
Derek was nice to her from the beginning, so it wasn't so hard to like him. He brought her to his house and helped her to get close to Meredith.
Mark was narcissistic and thought he knew everything better than anyone. They didn't operate a lot together, most of them were trauma surgeries. She hadn't liked him since the first surgery. But one day, she lost one of her and Mark's patients and was so sad. He was one of the patients that she will never forget. Mark came to her and comforted her. She found out that Mark wasn't a bad person after all. She realized that he was a great husband for Lexie, a great father for George and Sofia, and a great brother to her and Meredith.
Those people are her family, and she knows that no matter what, her sisters will always be there for her and support her.
