Season 1: Episode 9

While nervous, Emily couldn't help but smile as she reached up to push some of her hair back, behind her ear.

"They're watching us, that's true." Maya told her from her side. "But we have to own our narrative, or they're gonna do it for us. So, let's go."

Emily smiled at that and nodded in agreement. "You're right, I'm glad to have taken this step, let's do it. I do not regret this for a moment."

"Good, because I don't regret any of it either." Maya agreed.

With that they began walking down the school corridor, exuding confidence and smiles, making it clear how they felt about each other and that was all that mattered.

"Remember." Maya said encouragingly. "Those that matter don't mind and those who mind don't matter. Anyone has a problem with this...that's they're problem, not ours."

Emily smiled and finished for her. "If they want to make it our problem, we tell them no, it's not and never will be, they're the ones who need help."

"Exactly."

As they reached their respective lockers, they spotted Alison and Ryan, having already got their books from their own lockers. The tow couples smiled at each other.

"Hey guys." Ryan greeted them.

They returned the greeting while Alison took note of their linked hands and knew exactly what this was about.

"Wow...congratulations you guys." She said cheerfully.

They both smiled at that and soon the bell rang and the 'show' was over as everyone quickly began to make their way to get to class.

With the bell ringing to signal the end of English class, before lunch, the students began to gather their stuff and began quickly leaving. Only Aria lingered, she bit her lip as she pulled out her dissertation but that wasn't the only thing on her mind which was leaving her in this current state. Finally, she approached the teacher's desk and Ezra looked up.

"Aria?"

"Mr. Fitz, I...I've got my dissertation here." She explained, cringing at how awkward she sounded.

Taking it he smiled, although the smile faded as he spoke. "Ah, thank you, alright, that just leaves two more...are you okay, you seem...troubled."

Aria sighed heavily. "I just...I'm having, problems at home. There, an issue going on and my dad doesn't want my mom to know, but I know and, um...he doesn't want me to tell her…"

She was surprised she was saying as much as she was, but was at least glad she had the sense to not say too much, not wanting to reveal the shameful secrets of her family.

Ezra was quiet for a moment, unsure. "Aria this is, all I can say is that you are being put in an unfair situation here. Your father is expecting too much from you, he can't lumber all this on you like this...You need to at least talk to him and get him to understand that."

Aria sighed but nodded. "I...I don't know how much that will help, but thanks, I'll...I'll do that, I just hope it works."

Ezra nodded slowly and watched as Aria left the class, a little worried about what she had just shared with him.

As she was walking however her phone buzzed and she checked it, instantly going on edge when she saw it was A.

"You should be careful Aria, don't want your teacher knowing too much about your family, who knows what kind of trouble that could lead to. A."

She grimaced, wondering just who on earth A was, how they could know that she had just talked to Mr. Fitz about her family problems, at least obliquely. It was then she saw and joined Spencer and Hanna just up ahead.

"Hey guys, what's going on?"

They turned to her and smiled, Hanna then spoke up.

"Hey Aria, we were just talking about Emily and Maya." She explained. "Pretty surprising right, I mean, you saw them come in too, didn't you?"

Aria nodded, managing her own smile. "Yeah, I did, it was...wow, just wow."

Spencer nodded. "I know, she looks so happy now too, doesn't she?"

"Yeah, she sure does." Aria commented.

They all smiled as they thought about their friend and how she was finally open and seemed happier than ever. What the girls didn't know was that Emily was not currently happy, at least not at that very moment.

"Surprised you're showing what you're really like Emily, very brave of you. But I wonder what your mother would think if she knew the truth about Maya...but do you know the truth about her already? A."

Emily narrowed her eyes, before deciding A was just messing with her and pocketed her phone and smiled again as she saw Maya.

Maya smiled and asked her something surprising.

"Hey, are you good at other sports besides swimming?"

Emily tilted her head. "Um, not too bad, why?"

It was then Maya pointed to a nearby sign which advertised an upcoming tennis tournament for the girls at the school, there were sixteen spaces and a few had already been filled.

"I don't know, Tennis is more Spencer's thing and…" Emily began before noticing just who had signed up. "You know what, I'll give it a go."

With that she took one of the tickets, now looking forward to the tournament.
