Chapter One

William had been cranky all day, he was too young to cut teeth and he wasn't sick. I guess even our adorable son had his moments. I had fed him and was rocking him in his room hoping he would sleep even for a few hours. Scully was downstairs cleaning up the kitchen after lunch. We had just settled into the house and several boxes of miscellaneous minutia were stacked in what would be our home office if I ever put effort into it.

I procrastinated until the last minute; I must empty those boxes this afternoon. I bought her a desk and it was to be delivered in a few hours. The room was large enough to accommodate two average-sized desks and she had mentioned she had wanted one for 8 years. Our basement office didn't have the room, so I decided to make it up to her. I purchased hers from a little thrift shop in town. We were walking back from lunch one day and she saw it in the window. She sauntered inside and fell in love with it. She is a northern girl, who loves dark hardwoods and the desk suited her. I made some lame-ass excuse as soon as we got back to our basement to get back to that store and purchase it before it was gone.

I heard her walk into William's room. She always thinks she can sneak up on me like a Ninja but, we are both so attuned to creaks and subtle noises successful sneak attacks happen as often as a blue moon. I felt her hands on my shoulders from behind. She slid them down over my chest.

"Is he asleep?" her low sexy voice fell gently across my eardrum. She leaned over me and kissed my cheek.

"Well, he hasn't blown a gasket in about ten minutes so, here's hoping.

I placed him in his crib, straightened his little jammies and caressed his head so as not to wake him. Scully stood next to me as we stared at our miracle. I looked over at her and kissed her, squeezing her hand. My heartbeat was always stronger when I looked at her and realized we made this perfect little person as well as the fact she was still here, next to me as she had been for almost nine years.

"We have some free time." She said looking at me. "He'll probably sleep for at least 2 hours."

"What did you have in mind Doctor?" She was always so lovely, her hair was pulled back leaving several stray strands dancing on her cheeks and she was wearing one of her slightly used T-shirts and a pair of faded-out, washed-to-many-times blue jeans. I was hoping she'd grab my hand and tug me into our bedroom, but alas that would have to wait. Whenever she wears those old, comfy clothes I never seem to get the opportunity to slowly take them from her. She did, however, grab my hand and promptly walked me to the office.

"We need to get this organized. It is out of control in here and with both of us working we need to get this room so we can walk around in it." She stood there, hands on her hips looking almost exactly like she had in Oregon all those years ago when I jumped out of the car like a lunatic painting an "X" in the road.

"I see that look in your eye Fox Mulder. I don't care how you look at me right now we'll have no play time until these boxes are empty and gone."

She smiled at me with that lurid, wicked look she gets when she teases me. The only way out of those thoughts was to think of a naked, hairy, Walter Skinner, which always seemed to douse my hormones slapping them back into place.

"If you didn't look like that this room would already be done." I did my best to blame her for the lack of my progress, but she merely laughed and walked out.

"I'll make some tea and we can knock that out in no time."

When she walked back into the office, I had two boxes gone but the other dozen still needed to be dealt with.

"See don't you feel better, it is looking good in here. Where do you want me to put the files?" she asked bending to lift a box.

"No Scully, don't lift those." Telling this independent woman not to do anything was risky. She stood up glaring at me.

"I'll get those. After I put them on the desk, the files can be placed into the is filing cabinets like they are at the office so I can find them easier." I picked up several boxes and put them on the desk.

"Mulder I am not weak, and I am capable of helping."

I kissed her lips sucking the bottom one into my mouth while I tasted it. I felt her hands on my chest and thought I should just throw the boxes to the floor and take her right there on the top of the desk but, if I waited just a few more hours I could still do that on her desk, and the boxes wouldn't be there at all. I looked at her as I broke the kiss.

"I'll take care of the boxes; you take care of filing them since you have better organizational skills. What do you think about dinner out tonight? I was hoping we could take a drive. You know get out of the house for a few hours grab some dinner, take a walk downtown get rid of some cabin fever."

I always fell under his spell when those green eyes landed on mine. "Where were you thinking?" I was hoping he'd say some little Diner or somewhere general so I wouldn't have to get dressed up with make-up and heels. I loved looking nice for him but, it was the weekend and William had been fussy all day and we were both tired. I almost asked him to take a rain check but, I knew he rarely wanted to leave the house on the weekends since his return. He'd rather spend his time with us at the house. I loved that domestic side of him but, he needed to get back to his gaming marathons with the TLG and get his Ya-Ya's out every now and again. Besides those three missed him dearly while he was gone.

"There's a new Italian place near the Hoover building and I want to try it."

"Do I have to get dressed up?"

"Scully you can go just like you are. It's a pizza place but they also serve pastas, strombolis, calzones, and a few desserts including your favorite, tiramisu."

I stood up looking at her. My Scully would look great in a gunny sack. William and I were lucky guys to have her in our lives.

"What do you say?" I leaned over the box, I placed on the desk and waited for her answer.

"Okay, I'm in. It better be good or you know what happens." She winked at me, picked up the empty cups and walked towards the kitchen.

I heard a knock at the door and noticed a large box truck outside. "Mulder did you order something?" I asked as he walked out of the office.

"I did, your desk is here."

I looked at him, as he walked out the front door and met with the driver and his passenger. The back of the truck was opened, and I saw the desk from the thrift store I had drooled over a week ago. I was shocked at Mulder's actions but in a good way this time. The desk was blemish free and the corner sides were ornately carved with Elephants, trunks upright in various heights. It was beautiful and in such great shape. It was made from Cherry wood, my favorite. The wood had a reddish hue and absorbed just the right amount of dark stain to accent the wood grain leaving a slight reddish hue to the final product.

Mulder led the men into the house and showed them where to place it in the office, just opposite of his. They adjusted the desk, so it fit against his. They finished the job, received a tip and left. He stood in the office with a rag in his hand and began wiping it down. I walked in and stood next to him.

"Where did this come from and why?" I asked, putting my arm around his waist.

"I watched how you looked at it that day we were walking back from lunch. I saw the look in your eye when you walked in to check it out. I made that lame-ass excuse to go back and get it for you as soon as we got back to the office." I said, feeling proud of myself.

"So, the excuse you needed to speak with Skinner was a ruse?"

"Yes, it was a complete and utter ruse, and I am proud of it. I wanted you to have it. You never do anything for yourself Scully. You deserve it and I never got you a desk at work, so I wanted you to have one at home. I know you'll use it even if you only use it to put pictures of William on it." I kissed her salient lips and reminded her of our dinner date.

"You are always a surprise Mulder. Thank you, it is beautiful, and I love it. I will use it if nothing else just to sit in the chair and place my feet on it to watch you work."

I checked on William around 4:00 and he was awake watching his mobile. His blond hair floating above his head and his blue eyes sparkling like stars in the sky. I am always mesmerized by his movements and wonderous behavior, his eyes were focusing on more each day. I stood next to his crib and looked down at him, smiling and scratching his tummy. Everything he encountered was the first time and it was indescribable to watch him experience it.

"Come here sweetheart. You are such a good little boy. Mommy's going to give you a bath, change you, get you dressed up. Daddy is going to take us out tonight for a little ride and some dinner. You might get your first taste of cannoli filling." It was hard to believe he was already four months old and would be calling me mama soon.

I placed his little bathtub inside the big one and handed him his duckie. He was busy smacking his poor duck into the water as I tried to get him all rinsed off. He was being a wiggle worm, water was all over me, and the floor. I couldn't help but smile at him knowing every day would be a new adventure for the rest of my life.

"Okay, all the boxes are empty, bookshelves full, filing cabinets filled and routers set-up." I leaned into the bathtub, gave William a kiss and received a mouthful of soapy water courtesy of the duck.

"Can you take him for a minute? I need to get some towels to mop up the floor. Your son is having the time of his young life."

"I got him, and is this how it will be from now on when he's naughty he's mine?" I asked knowing the answer. It is a father's burden to have kids only when they are bad.

"Listen little mister we have a very important job tonight so get all of this out of your system. I need you to be my wingman so, I'm going to dress you in a nice outfit no Knicks jerseys for you."

I dressed my mini me in a dark blue one piece with feet which he seemed to like. I placed a small knit cap on his head to complete the ensemble. It looked great so I took the cap off and placed it in his diaper bag for later. I placed him in his carry seat and went to the bedroom to change. I doubted Scully would stay in those well-worn jeans although my-my she looked so good in them.

I stepped out of the bathroom and saw Mulder getting ready to change. If I did what I wanted to do I would put a screeching halt to any dinner plans he made but, we needed a night out. Our weekends became normal since his return to us. Of course, I reminded myself our normal was anything but that. We didn't spend our nights on stakeouts, driving across the country, or even searching abandoned buildings for aliens anymore, we had a son who needed us, and we needed him.

Once we settled into this house, he began to organize his world. It had shifted from his life-long obsession with aliens to domestication, which in a way terrified me. How long could I expect him to live like this. When I first met him, he rarely slept, rarely ate, well anything that was good for him anyway and he never sat still. I was shocked he maintained such a physique with that lifestyle.

"Wow," I said "You look fantastic Scully. I could order take-out." Scully looked like a model stepping out of a L.L. Bean catalog. Her face was freshly scrubbed, she had foregone make up and her freckles were visible making her look like the All-American girl-next-door. She had changed into another pair of sexy, well-worn jeans. She had put on a cream-colored cowl neck sweater and a pair of her tan-colored low-cut boots. I swear she was ageless and exquisite. Her hair was still up in the back with those orphaned strands of hair swaying back and forth when she walked.

"No dice mister we are going out as a family, and we are going to get some fresh air."

"I didn't say anything." I said it like I was confused at her remark but, she knew me too well and knew I was gazing at her. I couldn't help it. No need to hide the obvious anymore. I spent too many days and nights trying my best not to get caught staring at her, admiring the composition or DNA. I quietly thanked Maggie and William for bringing her into this world.

"You didn't have too." I said as I watched as Mulder pulled out his black turtle-neck sweater then donned his black loafers. I grabbed William's jacket and scarf once downstairs I would pack a bottle and an extra blanket for him. Mulder picked up his carry seat and we walked to the car.

The restaurant was quaint and had a great ambiance. The lighting was low, but we could still see each other and the menu. It was crowded but not noisy and we were seated quickly. Looking at Mulder I watched his green eyes scanning the menu while he held one of William's feet. He is such an attentive father. He has taken to this domestic life without complaint or regret. He is handsome and quirky and that suits me just fine.
