Roz Doyle's daily life was far from easy. A single mother, having to raise her daughter Alice alone, she juggled between this status and that of producer of the radio station KACL for the show of her colleague and friend, Doctor Frasier Crane.
Roz intervened less and less on the radio, lately, content to give the names of the participants in the show. Frasier, as a friend, understood the situation. Roz felt exhausted and even though Alice was staying with her grandparents for a while, she was not recovering.
Roz went home thinking. How would her life have evolved if she had allowed Rick, the father of her child, to stay close to her? Had she not made a mistake?
Roz had arrived. She took off her shoes and walked barefoot for a few moments. The leather of her new shoes hurt her feet. She was suddenly dizzy.
- My god, I'm so sleepy, I feel so tired, but i must'nt... I want to sleep, but I mustn't, I mustn't...
She could not finish her thought and collapsed on the bed, exhausted by fatigue.
The next day, Roz felt that something was licking his toes.
She opened her eyes and saw... a cat.
— What is this cat doing here? I had to leave the door open and he'll probably be home.
It was then that she heard a kind of dull growl, which sounded like a man's voice.
- Come on, honey, feed the cat, I have to bring Alice...
The man does not finish his sentence. Roz stared at him.
Was it really him? Was it Rick?
He smiled at her.
— You're staring at me like it's the first time you've seen me. You know, I was happy when I found out that you agreed to let me stay to take care of our daughter. I was so scared that you would change your mind.
Without asking for his rest, Roz left for work.
But when she entered the offices of the radio station, they all looked at her rather taken aback. She wondered what could be bothering them so much. Frasier, for his part, was busy talking on the air.
— It was Dr. Frasier Crane, who wishes you all good mental health. He barely had he disconnected his microphone than he saw Roz in turn, he was the first to be surprised.
- But what are you doing here?
- Frasier, listen, I know that lately I haven't been myself, but...
- Lately?
He had pronounced this sentence as if it had been an insult.
- Roz, it's been six years since you left KACL.
Roz was speechless and had to sit down. Frasier acknowledged that he may have exaggerated. After all, he could just as easily explain things calmly.
- Okay, you don't look very fresh, I'll tell you everything.
He searched for his words, not knowing what to say.
- Actually, Roz, you ... You left KACL a while ago to try your luck on KDJO.
Roz had never heard of this station.
- Rick was a waiter and you had to stay late at night sometimes, you could barely see your daughter growing up, and it was undermining you. So, you had to leave. And I have... I did the show on my own. Now I do both the standard and the interventions, he added.
— You don't see your family anymore?
- Let's say I'm alone now. I remember the day Daphne and her fiancé Joe broke up. Niles tried to woo her, but she sent him on the roses. The wound was still too fresh. So, he resigned himself. Oh, I tried to tell him that he was stubborn, but he didn't listen to me. And today he is in a mental asylum.
— Please tell me he's working there?
But Frasier had shaken his head, in a sign of denial.
- Unfortunately, no. Daphne packed up because she couldn't bear to see Dad and Sherry happy. Neither did I, by the way, so they left my apartment and took Eddie with them, but I hardly see them anymore. They're in Los Angeles now. I think I read that Daphne went back to live in England with her mother. Niles lost his mind, he even showed off at the cafe, once.
Roz later learned that Frasier's relations had lasted only a short time. True, he was now alone at home, but this seemed to displease him.
That's when she heard his name.
- Roz! Roz!
Roz woke up. Frasier was drumming at the door. Roz got up as hard as he could and went to open it for him.
- Roz, you left quickly today, everything is fine, aren't you sick?
By the sincere tone he used, Roz knew that she had returned to her reality.
She smiled, and ushered him in. she had a lot of things to tell him.
