"MASTER ROSHI vs. THE MASTER"

INTRODUCTION

Wiz: As I'm sure everyone's been told, it's always important to respect your elders.

Boomstick: Especially when those elders are ancient martial arts masters who could turn the average person inside-out without breaking a sweat.

Wiz: Master Roshi, the Turtle Hermit and former martial arts champion of the entire world.

Boomstick: And the Master, the leader and founder of the Toad Town Dojo. He's Wiz and I'm Boomstick.

Wiz: And it's our job to analyze their power, skills, and abilities to find out who would win a Death Battle.

MASTER ROSHI

Wiz: Somewhere in the middle of the ocean, there is a small island. And on this island is a small dwelling called Kame House. It is here that the Turtle Hermit, and former world martial arts champion, Master Roshi lives.

Boomstick: Don't let the Turtle title fool you though, there's nothing slow or weak about this old dude.

Wiz: Master Roshi is a powerful martial arts master who was once the strongest man the world. He eventually retired though, happy with the knowledge that he was able to bring his students as far as he could.

BACKGROUND:

Age: 350+

Height: 5'5

Weight: 97 lbs.

Brother of Fortuneteller Baba

Founder of the Turtle School of Martial Arts

Was trained by Mutaito and Korin

Trained Goku, Krillin, Ox King, and Grandpa Gohan

Alias: Turtle Hermit and Jackie Chun

Formerly the strongest man in the world

Boomstick: And boy did they go far. He must be so proud.

Wiz: Roshi trained both Goku and Krillin from when they were very young, most notably by making them wear weighted turtle shells while doing extensive manual labor. Roshi himself is often seen still wearing this type of turtle shell, which contributes to the name of his school.

Boomstick: Yeah, yeah, yeah, physical training and all that stuff. Come on, let's get to the good stuff where he starts blowing crap up.

Wiz: As a master martial artist, Roshi has learned to control his ki. This allows him to fire blasts of energy known as ki attacks.

Boomstick: Which led him to create the most iconic move in all of anime. The Kamehameha!

Wiz: The Kamehameha Wave is a power ki attack that relies on a series of hand movements to channels one's ki and unleash it in the form of a powerful beam of energy. After 50 years of practice, Roshi finally mastered the technique, and it has since become the signature move of all those who study at the Turtle School. Different variations of it have been used over the course of the series, but it was Roshi who was the original creator of it.

Boomstick: Anyone who's seen the show has attempted it at least once. I've actually tried it multiple times. Ka-me-ha-me-HA!

Wiz: Yes, we all know the phrase. But the Kamehameha isn't Roshi's only ki attack. He in fact knows a number of different attacks that use one's energy, and a variety of other martial arts moves that allowed him to make a name of himself over the years.

POWERS AND ABILITIES:

Super strength, speed, stamina, and durability

Sensing energy

Ki/energy attacks

Kamehameha

Thunder Shock Surprise

Creating afterimages

The ability to power up

Sleep-inducing hypnosis

Pressure Point Attack (to paralyze)

Longevity (due to drinking from the Fountain of Youth)

Telepathy

Various martial arts moves

Evil Containment Wave

Boomstick: And when all else fails, he resorts to the Evil Containment Wave, where he seals his opponent in a jar and keeps them trapped in there with a demon seal.

Wiz: While the technique is primarily meant to seal away demons and evil creatures, it can be used on others as well. However, it should be noted that this is a particularly dangerous technique, as it requires the user to use their actual life force, and thus can and has resulted in their death. Even Roshi ended up dying when attempting to use it on King Piccolo.

Boomstick: Yeah, and he didn't even manage to seal him away when using it. That's gotta suck.

Wiz: Of course, he was later revived thanks to a wish on the Dragon Balls, and has since continued to be a valuable member to the team as both a mentor and a warrior.

Boomstick: Until he gave up the mantle to Goku and set his sights on his true passion. The passion that all old dudes in anime seem to have an affinity for. Trying to get laid.

Wiz: It's true that Roshi has a weakness for the fairer sex.

Boomstick: Really, Wiz? A weakness?

Wiz: *Sigh* Ok, he's a total pervert, and can quite easily get distracted by an attractive woman and try and make a move on her. Which usually results in him getting hit, punched, kicked, and, in some cases, shot at.

Boomstick: Yeah, but can you blame him? I mean, have you seen some of the ladies in the series? I'd make a pass at them too.

Wiz: Your baser instincts truly disgust me.

Boomstick: At least I got more restraint than Roshi. The guy has absolutely no control.

Wiz: Unfortunately, this is true. In fact, Roshi's weakness for attractive women is so bad that he even had to undergo special training where he would try not to molest women, less he get distracted in battle, especially if his opponent is female.

Boomstick: Except for those times he used his weakness to his advantage and actual used his molestation skills as a way to fight… Wow, that sounded dirty even to me.

Wiz: Be happy, that means there's hope for you. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case for Roshi.

Boomstick: Yeah, but when you're this strong, it doesn't really matter what others think of you.

Wiz: Actually, Roshi is even stronger than he appears on the surface. Most of the time, he suppresses his real power, but when he unleashing his full strength, he gains a massive increase in size and muscle, and his strength amplifies. His most notable moment of doing this was during the 21st Martial Arts Tournament after Goku turned into a giant ape.

Boomstick: Yeah, when he blew the freakin' moon!

FEATS:

Won the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament

Defeated Goku and Krillin (as children)

Invented the Kamehameha

Destroyed the moon

Helped fight against Frieza's army

Defeated Caway, Dercori, and Ganos in the Tournament of Power

Wiz: This is arguably Roshi's biggest display of power. But even in his normal form, Roshi still exhibited great feats of strength, like how he was able to beat Goku as a child, even though Goku was strong enough top push large rock formations. But after forfeiting his match against Tien Shinhan in the 22nd Martial Arts Tournament, he retired from fighting almost entirely and pretty much took a backseat to the rest of the Z Fighters.

Boomstick: Until he fought in the Tournament of Power, where he was able to take out 3 of the other opponents.

Wiz: To be fair, he used pretty underhanded tactics that didn't rely on power to defeat two of those opponents, and it cost him all his energy to defeat the third. He actually used a version of the Kamehameha that converted his very life force into energy, and would have died had he not received a Senzu Bean afterwards.

Boomstick: Ah, yes, the magical healing beans that are pretty much the dues ex machine of the series. Still, he did far better than anyone actually expected him to do. He even earned the respect of Lord Beerus, a freakin' God of Destruction!

Wiz: Despite the numerous faults to Roshi's character, he always comes through in the end, even if it means sacrificing himself to save his friends.

Boomstick: Just as long as there aren't any attractive women nearby.

THE MASTER

Wiz: Somewhere in the Mushroom Kingdom is a quiet little place called Toad Town.

Boomstick: And in this town is a dojo run by the most badass, mushroom-headed old guy around known only as, bum, bum, bum… The Master!

Wiz: Very little is known about the Master, not even his real name, although the French version of the game refers to him as Kara T., a pun on the word karate.

Boomstick: Man, what's up with all the Toads having T. as their last name? Are they all related or something?

Wiz: Presumably it's in reference to the name of their species, but the Master has definitely made his own name for himself.

Boomstick: Yeah, I guess he would have if he's only known by his title.

BACKGROUND:

Age: Unknown

Height: Approx. 3'7

Weight: Unknown

Leader and owner of the Toad Town Dojo

Was trained by Goompa

Brother of Tayce T. and cousin of Zess T.

Teacher of Lee and Chan

Strongest opponent in Paper Mario

Wiz: Out of all the characters Mario faces in Paper Mario, the Master is the strongest, and that includes Bowser while he's enhanced and invincible.

Boomstick: You certainly wouldn't think he's so strong with the way he's always coughing and hacking.

Wiz: Underestimating the Master despite his old age would be a serious blunder. In fact, he's so powerful, that he won't even fight you himself until you defeat his two top students, Lee and Chan. And even then he'll still hold back his full power for two different rounds against him.

Boomstick: Yeah, if you're planning on going head to head with this old dude, you better be packing a lot of assist items and a variety of power-up badges.

Wiz: In the Mario series, there are a variety of items that can offer numerous different abilities that can aid characters in battle, the most notable being the different magic healing mushrooms.

Boomstick: Don't worry though, they don't get you high. They mostly just heal you… Bummer.

Wiz: The Master, it seems is above using any kind of assist items to give him an advantage, and only fights with his own power.

POWERS AND ABILITIES:

Super strength, speed, and stamina

The ability to power up

The ability to transform

Aura manifestation

Creating afterimages

Various martial arts

Knows moves that even Goombario (Goompa's grandson) has never heard of

Resistant to Sleep, Dizzy, Shock, Shrink, Stop, Fright, Air Lift, and Hurricane

Wiz: Even if Mario does manage to defeat him, chances are you're going to need to heal before doing anything else. But the Master is ready to face you a second time immediately after his first defeat, and his second one as well.

Boomstick: And if you think he was tough the first time, just wait until he transforms.

Wiz: With each battle against the Master, he will show more and more of his true power. This is done by him transforming into a golden warrior who develops a golden aura around him to demonstrate his power.

Boomstick: Let's just go ahead and say it. The guy pretty much goes Super Saiyan.

Wiz: A fair comparison, but unlike Super Saiyan, this isn't a power boost he receives from transforming, but rather him unleashing the true power that he possesses. And, quite frankly, it can be pretty intense. With his full power unleashed, he not only gets stronger, he also gets faster, and he can even move at speeds fast enough to leave behind a series afterimages.

Boomstick: To be honest, if this wasn't an RPG fighting style, actually being able to land a blow on the guy would probably be impossible. And if it weren't for HP, defeating him would probably be equally as impossible.

Wiz: Fire, lightning, hammers, explosions, magic, even attacks from the legendary Star Spirits, the Master just shakes them off like they're nothing and keeps coming.

Boomstick: That's right. The Master is so tough that an avalanche of shooting stars falling on him barely fazes him.

Wiz: Even after you defeat him for the third time when he's at full power, he still seems relatively unharmed and simply congratulates Mario for defeating him, as if the whole thing was nothing more than a simple test.

Boomstick: Damn, it's like nothing can keep this old guy down. Just how strong is he exactly?

Wiz: To be honest, we can't say for sure since the RPG battles with him are pretty standard, but we can get an idea by comparing him to Mario. For example, if we look at the game Mario 64, which takes place four years before Paper Mario, we see Mario performing feats like smashing giant rock monster called Whomps to rubble. His most impressive display of strength in the game, however, would probably be in the way he takes Bowser by the tail and throws him clear across the screen.

Boomstick: To give you an idea of how impressive that is, Bowser weighs in at a whopping 660 pounds. And Mario just grabs him by the tail and tosses him around like a sack of potatoes. And let's not forget about the time he lifted up an entire castle and threw it like it was nothing. Mario's also strong enough to fight on equal ground with Donkey Kong, and old DK was able to punch the entire moon out of orbit.

Wiz: It should be noted though that the moon in question here is significantly smaller than the one in the real world, and even though Mario's not as strong as DK, the fact that he's able to stand against him in battle is still pretty impressive.

Boomstick: Wait, I think we're getting off topic. I thought we were supposed to be talking about the Master.

Wiz: We're getting there. As I said, Paper Mario actually takes place after the games we just mentioned, so it's safe to assume that Mario has only gotten stronger since then, and we've already demonstrated just how strong Mario is prior to that. Even so, at the start of Paper Mario, Mario is only able to deliver one point of damage to an opponent per attack unless he's using his hammer. Compare this to the Master, who, when fighting at full power, is able to deliver blows that do up to 10 points of damage. By this, we can determine that the Master is at least 10 times stronger than Mario is at the beginning of the game. In fact, the Master also possesses a heightened defense that would have completely rendered Mario unable to damage him at all at the start of the game had it not been for his hammer.

Boomstick: Oh, now I see why we were looking at how strong Mario is prior to Paper Mario. If he's able to easily perform feats like that, and the Master is 10 times stronger than him, it gives you a pretty good idea of what the old guy's capable of.

FEATS:

Defeated Mario and company while sick and feeble (possible outcome)

Survived being struck by shooting stars and various other attacks

Moved fast enough to emit an after image

Manifested his energy as an aura

Surpasses the final boss, Invincible Bowser, in terms of strength and power

Dealt three hits in a row during a single attack

Wiz: In all actuality, the Master is probably even stronger than this, as it's been determined that the Master has delicate health based on the way he's always coughing and wheezing. This would naturally affect his overall strength, which really makes you wonder how strong he is at full health.

Boomstick: Man, forget full health. How strong do you think he was in his prime?

Wiz: There's really no telling. As I said, very little about the Master's backstory is known, and we only ever see him in action when he fights Mario and his party.

Boomstick: Yeah, we should have mentioned that earlier. When you fight against the Master, you have several different battle buddies to help you fight him while the Master fights solo.

Wiz: While nearly all enemies Mario faces are only able to deliver a single blow at a time, the Master's is so fast that he's able to deliver a series of combo moves that will allow him to deal up to three blows at once.

Boomstick: And at the end of the day, this was still all just a friendly competition to the guy in order to determine Mario's level of skill and strength.

Wiz: Which is why the Master is actually just an optional boss that's not required for Mario to defeat in order to beat the game.

Boomstick: That's right, he's so strong and so tough that fighting him isn't even part of the game's actual story. Defeating him is nothing more than a badge of honor and bragging rights. And believe me, if I was able to beat someone like this, I'd certainly brag about it.

Wiz: But whether you're able to defeat him or not, the Master will surely demonstrate why it's important to respect your elders.

THE BATTLE

Master Roshi is flying over Toad Town on the Flying Nimbus. He's wearing his weighted turtle shell, and has his cane in one hand and a bottle of sake in the other. Looking down, he spots a group of female Toads, and his eyes bug out as a perverted grin spreads across his face. Suddenly, he falls through the cloud, and crashes to the ground. He gets up a few seconds later, rubbing his head.

Roshi: "Darn cloud. Dropping me just because of a few impure thoughts."

He immediately darts over to the female Toads, getting far too close for comfort.

Roshi: "Hey there, pretty ladies. Never met a couple of mushroom girls before, but I do love my veggies."

The female Toads are clearly uncomfortable and inch away, but Roshi continues to invade their personal space. The Master suddenly walks up behind him.

The Master: "Excuse me, sir, *cough, hack* I must ask you to leave these young ladies alone."

Roshi barely glances at him.

Roshi: "Back off, old timer, I saw them first."

Turning back to the female Toads, he begins poking the cheek of the closest one and holding up his bottle of sake to her.

Roshi: "What do you say you and I go have a drink together? And later I can show you just how much I love to eat mushrooms. Hehehe!"

The Master suddenly lunges at Roshi, delivering a punch that knocks him away from the female Toads. He then stands in front of them protectively and holds up his hands in a fighting pose.

The Master: "It seems I must teach you a lesson in manners."

Roshi jumps to his feet and turns to the Master, taking on his own fighting pose.

Roshi: "Alright, mushroom man, let's do this."

FIGHT!

Roshi charges at the Master. Using his fists, legs, and cane, he attacks the Master, who proceeds to dance backwards, avoiding the blows. Roshi tries to hit him with his cane, but the Master blocks it, and the punch Roshi throws next. He then jumps up, kicking Roshi in the head with both feet, knocking him back. Roshi lands on his feet though and shakes his head.

Roshi: "You're no ordinary old man. Guess I won't be needing this."

He takes off his weighted turtle shell and tosses it aside. Then he goes after the Master again. Without his turtle shell, his movements are much faster, and the Master is forced to block the blows since he can't move fast enough to avoid them. Roshi attempts to hit him with his cane again, and the Master blocks the blow, then delivers a karate chop that breaks the cane in half. Roshi is shocked by this, and the Master delivers a punch that has him skidding backwards. The Master charges at Roshi, but Roshi lunges at him, hitting the Master in the face with his knee. The Master goes flying backwards, but does a flip and lands on his feet.

The Master: "Quite impressive. I guess I don't need to hold back."

He suddenly transforms into his golden form. Roshi's mouth drops open at the sight of him.

Roshi: "What? He can go Super Saiyan?"

The Master: "I know not what this Super Saiyan is, but you shall know my power. To battle!"

He speeds at Roshi, delivering a punch. Roshi blocks by holding up both hands. The Master jumps over him and delivers a kick to his back, knocking Roshi to the ground. Roshi gets up and turns back to the Master, only to have the Master charge at him and deliver an uppercut that sends Roshi into the air. Before he hits the ground, the Master jumps up and delivers a series of blows. Roshi suddenly blocks one of the blows, and the two land on the ground and jump apart.

Roshi: "Don't be too confident. I'm still holding back."

He suddenly powers up, gaining a large mass of muscles that causes his shirt's sleeves to explode apart. The Master is caught off guard by this sudden change, and Roshi charges at him. He delivers a punch that sends the Master flying backwards, then charges after him.

While the Master is still flying backwards, Roshi catches up with him and delivers several more blows before kicking him backwards. The Master crashes into a ? Block, and a mushroom pops out. It falls on the Master, healing him. Roshi hesitates as he sees this.

Roshi: "You're not the only one who can heal with something."

Taking out a Senzu Bean, he eats it, healing his own injuries. The Master gets up and dusts himself off.

The Master: "That was unintentional. It is against my policy to use such items."

Roshi: "Very well, then I won't use them anymore either. But I don't think I'll need to once I use my Sleepy Boy Technique."

Using a series of hand movements, he attempts to hypnotize the Master into falling asleep. It fails, however, and the Master remains standing.

The Master: "Such techniques will not work on me. If you wish to win, you must use your own strength."

The two of them charge at each other. Roshi throws a punch, and the Master uses a karate chop. Their hands collide, and they attempt to push the other back. Then they suddenly unleash a series of blows on each other that are nearly too fast to see, the force of their blows causing a crater to form around them.

They both take a step back, and then punch forward, their fists colliding with each other's faces in slow motion. The blow knocks them both back, but they both land on their feet. The Master charges at Roshi again and throws a punch. Roshi maneuvers around him, and uses his Pressure Point Attack, striking the Master on different parts of his body. It doesn't work, and the Master jumps up and kicks Roshi away.

The Master: "Attacking my pressure points will not affect me."

Roshi jumps to his feet and cups hands together.

Roshi: "Then let's see if this will. Ka-me-ha-me-HA!"

He fires a beam of energy. The Master is surprised by the incoming attack, but manages to jump out of the way. Roshi fires another one, but the Master jumps over this one as well. Roshi gets frustrated and begins thrusting his hands out, firing small blasts of ki each time. The Master used a series of punches and chops to knock the ki blasts away, then charges at Roshi. He continues to knock the ki blasts away until he reaches Roshi, then hits him with an uppercut. Roshi gets knocked up into the air, and the Master delivers another uppercut as he falls back down. He repeats this several more times before jumping into the air and delivering a kick that sends Roshi crashing to the ground.

Roshi jumps back to his feet as the Master lands and charges at him again. He suddenly uses his Thunder Shock Surprise attack, and the Master is hit by the bolts. He thrashes around as Roshi lifts him up into the air and continues to shock him.

Roshi: "There's no escaping my Thunder Shock Surprise attack. Just surrender, otherwise the pain you feel will only continue to get worse."

The Master: "Your attack is not as affective as you may think."

He suddenly unleashes his full power, breaking free of the Thunder Shock Surprise. Roshi's mouth drops open as the Master lands on the ground, a fiery golden aura now surrounding him.

The Master: "Kwaaaaa! Behold my fury!"

He charges at Roshi, leaving a trail of afterimages behind. He hits Roshi with his three hit combo move, then knocks him back with his strongest blow. Roshi lands on his feet, and the Master comes at him again. He strikes Roshi again and again with a series of fast movements before Roshi manages to block a blow, then begins delivering his own series of hits before firing a Kamehameha Wave that sends the Master flying backwards.

The Master kicks off a wall and flies back towards Roshi. They both throw a punch, and their fists collide, the shockwave from the impact tearing the ground apart. Then they break out in a series of punches, moving so fasts that their fists are mere blurs.

The Master manages to land a kick in Roshi's stomach that knocks him back. As he hits the ground, he spots the sake bottle from earlier and gets an idea. Uncorking it, he gulps down the rest before setting it down in front of him and motioning for the Master to come at him.

The Master: "This will end it."

He charges at Roshi again. Then Roshi suddenly surprises him by using the Evil Containment Wave. The Master is caught up in it, lifted into the air, and sent into the bottle. Roshi corks it, trapping the Master inside, then picks it up and laughs victoriously.

Roshi: "Mushroom in a jar! I wonder if this will become a thing."

The bottle begins to shake, and Roshi begins feeling over his person for a demon seal, only to realize that he doesn't have one.

Roshi: "Oh, darn. I don't have a seal."

The bottle shakes some more, and Roshi looks at it nervously before it suddenly explodes in his hand. The Master is freed, and he delivers a kick to Roshi's face that sends him skidding backwards. The Master lands on his feet and stares at Roshi, performing a series of hand movements in preparation.

The Master: "Your skills are impressive, but it will take more than some fancy tricks to defeat me."

Roshi is silent for a few seconds before letting out a resigned sigh.

Roshi: "Fine, then I guess I have no choice."

He begins powering up to his maximum. His shirt completely exploded as his muscle mass increases to ridiculous levels, leaving him twice as big and incredibly bulky. The Master hesitates as he takes in Roshi's new form, but does not back down.

The Master: "Hm! You have great hidden strength for one having dressed like a turtle. Now... it is time I stopped being so merciful. Hyaaahhhh! Survive this if you can!"

He charges at Roshi again and delivers his 3 hit combo move. His attacks are completely ineffective as they simply bounce off Roshi's bulky form. Caught off guard, the Master backs away from Roshi to reconsider his opponent.

Roshi: "Now it's my turn. Ka-me-"

The Master: "Hmph. Your attacks may be powerful, but they take too long to use, and they leave you vulnerable."

Roshi: "Ha-me-"

The Master: "Now, bow before the Master!"

He charges at Roshi at full speed. Just before the Master would have hit him, Roshi jumps straight up into the air. He leaves an afterimage behind, and the Master attacks it, going straight through the illusion as Roshi leaps over his head. The Master realizes he's been tricked and turns around again as Roshi lands where the afterimage had been, turning to face the Master.

Roshi: "HAAAAA!"

He unleashes all his strength in a full-powered Kamehameha Wave. The beam is enormous, and it strikes the Master, flowing over him. The Master's silhouette is visible in the beam for a few moments before he disintegrates, leaving no trace of him behind.

Once he finishes firing the beam, Roshi's large muscles disappear as he powers back down to his natural form.

Roshi: "Well, that takes care of that. Not to see about those mushroom ladies!"

KO!

The female Toads are seen running through Toad Town as a blushing Roshi chases after them while wiggling his fingers with a big perverted grin on his face.

OUTCOME

Boomstick: Looks like the Master has been dethroned. Not like he had much time left anyway.

Wiz: Both Roshi and the Master were very skilled martial artists, but Roshi had the advantage in pretty much every area. Not just in strength and overall power, but also speed.

Boomstick: The Master is able to move fast enough to leave behind an afterimage, but Roshi is able to do that too. In fact, he has a whole technique that actually uses an afterimage as a decoy called… um, well, the Afterimage Technique, which he even used in the battle itself.

Wiz: Roshi has actually been seen moving at speeds even faster than this, as there have been times where he has completely disappeared from sight and become invisible due to how fast he's moving.

Boomstick: The Master may be able to move fast enough to leave behind an afterimage, but at least you can still see him. Roshi, however, is able to disappear completely.

Wiz: To give you an idea of the difference in speed, in order to create an afterimage that's only a meter away from the original position, the person or object needs to move from one spot to the other at a minimum of 2,236 mph. However, in order to disappear from sight completely, a person or object would need to move at a minimum of 38,416 mph in order to be completely invisible to the naked eye.

Boomstick: That's over 17 times as fast as the Master. He can create all the afterimages he wants, but there's no way he's catching Roshi at those speeds.

Wiz: Roshi also knew a lot more martial arts moves and special techniques that the Master did. However, due to the Master's resistance to the effects of things like Sleep, Shock, Stop, and more, several of Roshi's techniques wouldn't affect him the way they would an ordinary opponent, as was demonstrated when he tried to use his Sleepy Boy Technique, Thunder Shock Surprise, and Pressure Point Attack.

Boomstick: And while he did manage to use the Evil Containment Wave despite the Master's resistance to Air Lift and Hurricane, it would have required a seal in order for him to have contained the Master in the jar indefinitely, and those aren't exactly things Roshi just carries around with him.

Wiz: Despite the Master's resistances to certain techniques, Roshi possessed different moves that the Master wasn't resistant to, most notably his ki attacks.

Boomstick: Yeah, but since simply smacking away ki attacks is something lots of characters do in Dragon Ball, it would safe to assume that the Master would be able to do the same, as long as the attack isn't too powerful.

Wiz: And therein lies the biggest difference between the two. The Master may be strong, but Roshi has shown to be capable of more powerful feats. And while it's true that we don't know exactly how strong the Master is, it's unlikely that he would be able to match Roshi in terms of strength.

Boomstick: Wiz, I don't think we can put it off any longer. We gotta bring up the Tournament of Power.

Wiz: *Sigh* Yes, you're right. See, throughout all of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and most of Dragon Ball Super, Roshi, while very strong compared to normal people, is next to nothing next to the Z Warriors, and his strength has been pretty much constant throughout the different series. That is, until the Tournament of Power came along, then Roshi's power was suddenly off the scale.

Boomstick: To be fair, at this point in the series, all logic went out the window completely, and all the characters pretty much became as strong or as weak as they needed to be for whatever situation they were in.

Wiz: It's true that the power the characters possessed was always in the realm of fantasy, it at least followed the logic of the DBZ universe. However, that wasn't the case in the Tournament of Power Saga.

Boomstick: When last clocked in, Roshi had a power level of 139. But just before the Tournament of Power, after he was placed under a spell, he was shown to be even more powerful than Tien Shinhan, and his last known power level was 1,976,000. And Tien never stopped training over the years between then and the Tournament of Power, so he would have only gotten stronger since then. So the thought that Roshi is just as strong or even stronger than him is crazy!

Wiz: The explanation given was that Roshi must have been doing some training in secret, but even following DBZ logic, the idea that Roshi's power could have risen that much to be able to surpass Tien, especially when he never showed any sign of training or being anywhere near that powerful is, quite frankly, ludicrous. And seeing as the Tournament of Power had fighters who were on par with universal destroyers, it makes the idea that Roshi could stand up to fighters of that caliber even more ridiculous, even by Dragon Ball standards, especially since he never gave any sign that he was anywhere even close to this level of power throughout the entire series.

Boomstick: Yeah, but like I said, everyone in the series, not just Roshi, was just suddenly made as weak or as powerful as they needed to be for whatever the situation was at that point, even if it was completely ridiculous and made no sense.

Wiz: If we discredit how ridiculously strong Roshi suddenly was during the Tournament of Power and base his strength on how he was portrayed throughout a majority of the series, then the Master may actually have stood a decent chance of winning. But even then, the odds would still have been more in Roshi's favor based on the level of power he had portrayed up to that point.

Boomstick: Yeah, don't forget that this was the guy who launched a Kamehameha Wave that blew up the entire moon. The Master may be able to shake off being hit by a bunch of shooting stars, but there's no way he's walking away from an attack like that. Once Roshi powered up to 100%, it was all over.

Wiz: The winner, is Master Roshi.

TRIVIA

Both are elderly martial arts masters who run training schools.
