At Grand Marshal Garithos' base camp, near the outskirts of Dalaran, Kael'thas and his warriors arrive bearing ill news.
Maverick was present at this meeting with Garithos. Garithos brought over forty soldiers with him inside the ruins of Dalaran. Maverick was impatient like Garithos as both are left doing nothing until Prince Kael'thas arrives.
"I told you he would run late." Maverick says to Garithos, who remains sitting down in front of a table, while his horse was nearby eating some hay that was brought by one of the soldiers. Maverick continues "If you just let me take care of the undead in this part of the area –"
"NO!" Garithos raise his voice and cause Maverick to pause. Garithos was looking unhappy and replies "We let those elves handle this. That's what they get for running late."
Maverick turns away and thought to himself "Damn… That made me skip a beat…" Then he looks out to find the man of the hour arriving late. "And there he is."
Kael'thas Sunstrider arrives at the scene with a large group of elves beside him. Maverick was left amaze to see Kael'thas right in front of his face and coming towards Garithos.
"Greetings, Prince Kael'thas. Good to see you in person." Maverick says to him "Big fan by the way."
Kael raises an eyebrow with confusion and continues walking past Maverick to stop in front of Garithos.
Garithos rises from his seat and replies "You are late, Prince Kael'thas. I thought you elves prided yourselves on punctuality."
"It could not be helped, Lord Garithos. We ran into a group of night elves from across the sea, and –"
"I am not interested in your fanciful excuses!" Garithos raises his voice to stop Kael from talking. He continues "You elves are here to serve the Alliance: thus, you will obey my commands to the letter! Is that clear?"
Kael hesitates at first until he replies calmly towards him "Yes, Lord Garithos."
Maverick stands nearby and watches from the distance. He thinks to himself "This is just like the game…. Except everything is all real…"
Garithos sighs and moves around the table when explaining the situation to him "Now, the undead have begun a new offensive to retake Dalaran. Their primary strike force marched south through Silverpine, but we managed to halt its advance at the base of the mountains."
"My men are ready to fight, milord! When shall we leave for the front?" Kael replies with a determination to join the offensive against the undead.
Garithos stops him there by saying "We will be leaving immediately. But, your people will be staying here. Our scouts report that a second strike force may be heading this way from the east. I need you to repair the outlying observatories so that we can monitor that region."
Kael'thas' determination went out the window and not looking happy to learn what his orders are going to be. He tries to protest saying "But, milord, we are warriors, not –"
But Garithos stops him yet again by saying "You have your orders, Prince Kael'thas. I trust your elven ears heard them clearly enough." And with that he walks away from Kael, climbs back on his horse and looks back to everyone that is not an elf "Move out!"
Garithos and his soldiers leave the area with Kael to stay behind with his people. Maverick watches Kael at a distance and calls out to him "Don't worry, Prince Kael'thas, you'll get your chance at fighting the undead. Good luck." And with that he turns away and follows Garithos out of the area.
And with that, Kael'thas stays behind with his people and extra support of humans and dwarves to help reinforce the region. Maverick follows beside Garithos on a trip to go out of Dalaran and travel with a large army towards Southpoint Gate where the border towards Silverpine lies.
"I expect you to do your job by annihilating the first wave of undead with your magic." Garithos said to him "I'll be placing you at the vanguard of this operations."
"Don't worry about me. I've got a spell that'll surprise you off your horse." Maverick chuckles while walking
"We'll see about that."
And so Maverick marches with the army towards the stone gate with two large towers protecting it. There is already a human camp on this side of the gate, while the land beyond it is already consume by the blight of the Scourge. The dwarves and humans have occupy the walls and towers with their siege weapons and rifles, while the infantry and cavalry remain on the other side behind the gate.
Maverick stands on the wall and looks out on the other side at the land of Silverpine. He says to himself "Yeah… This is exactly how things went down…"
He remembers this chapter of the campaign well. The objective was to only defend and not attack the incoming waves of undead. The objective will be complete when they survive twenty minutes against wave after wave of undead. Once they annihilate that many undead infantry, Garithos will open the gate to launch a surprise offensive to wipe out the enemy bases to finish the level.
"And here they come…"
Out in the distance, Maverick spots the army of the dead marching straight towards them with a large host of over two thousand units. He was amaze to find so many undead marching towards them with all kinds of creature's altogether.
"Damn… This feels like Game of Thrones…."
"What was that?" One of the men asks him when eavesdropping in him talking to himself.
"It's nothing." Maverick takes a few steps back and turns around to begin casting some protective spells "Okay… Let's get started."
The undead continues the slow march towards the gate, but the speed suddenly got faster as they got close enough to begin the charging sequence. The soldiers on the wall quickly take aim with their weapons and await for their captain to give the word to fire. Maverick returns to the wall with his right hand held high in the air to commence a spell he was ready to perform. The moment the captain gives the signal, everyone fires their guns and signal the mortars to fire down upon them. The action sequences was amazing at the sight of everyone firing at the same time. Maverick spices things up by casting the spell 'Firestorm' by firing a fireball straight into the clouds above him, then come hurling down with a large number of fireballs to bombard the whole area in front of him. He would witness his spell achieving total success as the undead are completely consume by the flames.
The undead fight back by using their siege weapons to fire rotting corpse, consumed by the plague, hurling these objects over the wall and on the wall to infect anyone who makes contact with it. Maverick was completely safe with his shield protecting him, but he was force to watch nearby soldiers die slowly with the disease infecting them and forcing some of the men to kill them before they turn.
They arrive at the front gates, slamming themselves against the wooden gate and being crush by the larger ones standing behind them. These abominations that were put together by all kinds of corpses became the battering rams for the Scourge to break through the gate. The humans behind the gate attempt to barricade the gate to help reinforce it, while the men on the walls try to aim their guns down and shoot the abominations. Maverick would support them as well by firing a blast of lightning that hits one abomination and triggers a chain that continues hitting every enemy around it. The abominations would ignore the magical attacks and continues hitting the gate to leave serious marks. Maverick has to increase his destruction spells if he wishes to win this fight against the undead. The next spell he performs by pressing his hands together above his hand to create a flaming orb, then throws it into the sky and call forth a large meteor to descend from the clouds and deliver a devastating blow to the entire undead army.
Garithos and many soldiers look up to witness this massive meteor coming down and delivering a large explosion over the wall. The shockwave was enough to send many of the soldiers off the walls and it even cause Garithos' horse to lose control over the sudden tremor that blast did on this side of the wall. Garithos ends up losing control of his horse and falls off of it, which angers him dearly when being thrown to the floor.
The destruction of the meteor was enough to stop the battle on both sides. The surviving undead would rise back up again and continue with whatever is left of them, while the soldiers try returning to the edges of the wall to aim down at the ones still targeting the gate.
The battle eventually comes to a close much quickly and the preparations to heal the men was underway inside the camp. Only a few priests' remains within the New Alliance, and a handful of potions and scrolls of healing that was found in the ruins of Dalaran are the only things keeping this army's health to a max. Maverick would also support them by firing a blast of healing wave at one soldier and then bounce off to others around him, making them all recover from their injuries.
Garithos comes riding towards Maverick with unhappiness. Although he is never happy and always has that same expression on his face.
"Uh oh… Here comes trouble…"
"I suppose you thought it was funny dropping a meteor right in front of the front gate!" Garithos says to him
Maverick smirks and replies "It's necessary to gain total victory. You don't like my methods?"
"Your magic is required for the extermination of the undead. However, you try that again and get any of my men killed, there will be consequences."
"Hmmm, fine then. What more is there I can do?"
"As soon as the undead have stopped their attack on the gate, you'll be exterminating the rest of them. I don't want a single dead walking out of here." Garithos turns around and rides away from him.
Maverick watches him leave and thought to himself "I wonder if I have the stomach to shoot him in the back?" He then sighs when turning around and goes walking towards the gate.
The undead fail to put up a fight as soon as the gate opens and witness the army on the other side charging straight through. They tore through whatever is left of the dead and leave Maverick to cast a few lesser destructive spells that is enough to destroy the ones in front of him. While he is doing that, Garithos would eventually depart from this land and see how Kael'thas is doing with his mission of repairing the observatories.
The army returns back to the other side as soon as they got a clear of any walking corpses anywhere. Maverick was sitting down on a barrel and drinking fine ale from the dwarves and celebrating the well victory with less casualties.
"We cannot thank you enough for what you've done for us." One of the human footman said to Maverick while coming to sit down next to him and taking off his helmet.
"Just doing my job." Maverick replies and drinks the ale. He sighs deeply at the taste of ale for the first time and desire to drink a little more.
"Aye, careful with that." One of the dwarves said to Maverick "Don't want to see a mad magician drunk and going crazy with magic."
Maverick looks to the dwarf and laughs "I'll be alright. I don't feel anything drinking this."
"Tell me, were you there when the undead attacked Dalaran?" The footman asks him
Maverick was hesitant to respond to that because he was there and he was the one controlling the undead to attack Dalaran. He eventually replies "No… I was there at the aftermath."
"You would've been killed if you were there." Said a priest who comes towards them to join this conversation "Grand Magus of the Kirin Tor was among the strongest and prodigy to the wizards of Dalaran. Not even his powerful magic was enough to stop Prince Arthas."
"That man is no prince!" The footman replies with anger "That bastard needs to suffer for what he's done."
Maverick looks to him and asks "Where were you when the undead attacked?"
The man looks to Maverick and replies "I was there at Andorhal when the undead attacked… I got injured and was transported down south. I think if I wasn't injured that day, I would've been dead alongside the rest of the Silver Hand."
"I was stationed with my lads at Hearthglen…" The dwarf replies and sighs "I was the only one made it out alive…" He looks down in sadden at the thought of remembering his fallen comrades. He lifts his head up and starts drinking all of the ale inside his mug.
"Hmmmm, the fate of Lordaeron is in our hands." Maverick replies and looks to all of them "Depending on what actions we make, we can all change what happens in the future."
"That's something to get another pint." The dwarf replies and already refills his mug from the barrel "To the future."
Everyone replies "To the future."
Maverick looks back down at his mug and finish drinking all the ale. When he ask for seconds, he pauses when his eyes look behind him to find Garithos coming to the scene. He stands up and asks "Lord Garithos. You should have a drink and give your horse a break for once."
"No. Your lunch break is over. It's time to move out." Garithos replies
"Were moving through Silverpine?" Maverick asks him
"We have our chance to reclaim Silverpine from the undead, which gives us the advantage of reaching closer to the Capital City. The observatories gives us the chance to see what lies ahead, and we have an opening right now. So I want you leading the vanguard once again, Maverick."
Maverick sighs when getting up off the barrel and replies "As you say so, Lord Garithos."
Garithos turns to one of his knights and orders "Send the scouts back to those blood elves. I want to know the location of those serpents."
"Yes, milord." The rider turns his horse around and rides off somewhere in the camp
Maverick heard what Garithos said and thought to himself "It's happening soon. Chapter two of the blood elves."
What Maverick said was true as the blood elves would soon face off against another wave of incoming undead from the west of his position on the island. Thanks to this advance, Garithos uses this chance to advance further into Silverpine with little resistance to stop his army from securing the areas of Ambermill and Deep Elem Mine. Both these places became a good opportunity to gather resources of gold and lumber to help continue this New Alliance.
After the New Alliance succeeds in taking the mine, Garithos would begin his return to confront Kael'thas the moment he heard the news from his scouts about Lady Vashj and her naga working together with Kael'thas and his elves. Angered by this, he calls a large number of his men, including Maverick to join him on confronting Kael'thas and brand them as traitors to the New Alliance. Maverick was not happy about this, knowing what will happen pretty soon, but he keeps his words to himself and remain following Garithos all the way back to meet with Kael.
"So, Kael, you've shown your true colours at last. I knew you were in league with those serpents. Now I have all the proof I need to execute every traitorous one of you!" Garithos replies while standing on a higher view from Kael and showing a sign of superiority towards him.
Kael'thas pleads to Garithos by saying "Please, milord, spare my men! It was my decision to –"
Garithos really likes stopping Kael at halfway of his sentences. He replies "Save your breath. I never trusted you vainglorious elves. It was a mistake to accept you into the Alliance in the first place. Now, at long last, you'll be dealt with appropriately. Take them away!"
And so the humans surround the elves and forces all of them to disarm and follow them into the city of Dalaran. It is here where all of the blood elves would be sent underground to face execution soon. This was also the same entrance that Maverick went through when he got out of that underground catacombs and made it to the surface.
"Hmmm, time is almost up…" Maverick thought to himself and turns his head towards Garithos "Its time."
