Disclaimer - I don't own Dreamlight Valley. This was written for Froday Flash Fiction Challenge for the second regular challenge for April 2023 where the prompt was mercy and this is what i came up with.

Merci, not Mercy

"Merci," said the rat.

Scar stiffened, placing a paw on his chest as his nose wrinkled up in disgust at the vermin asking for mercy. "It's pathetically weak to beg for mercy, particularly after I've granted it by electing not to make any attempt to eat you."

Remy flinched. "No. Not mercy. Merci. "

"I don't see the difference," Scar said, letting out an indignant sniff.

"Difference. Ah. There is," Remy said. "On top of mercy ending in a 'y' and merci ending ends in an 'I,' they're words with totally different meanings. In fact, they're not even from the same language."

"Same language?"

"Mercy is English, and merci is French," Remy said. "The latter of which means 'thank you.'"

"Ah," Scar said. "How do you say welcome in this French?"

"Bienvenue," Remy said, relaxing, although not letting his guard down around Scar.

"I'm not even going to try to wrap my fangs around that one," Scar said, sniffing. "I hope you understand my meaning, though."

"Plenty," Remy said, hurrying off in change. Scar changed his mind about trying to eat him.
