Title: The Moment
Jon lingered on the veranda after his father finished talking to him. He knew he had seconds to ask his father questions, and get a sense of the man behind the wall. "Do you feel anything from that?"
Clark smiled at the glass in his hand. "No, this is just something your mother likes to do." It was a way to reconnect after a long day. The first boom cracked the sky, and both rushed to the railing. The smile widened. "Fireworks. Lana's house,"
The sky continued lighting up as the watched. Jon's eyes on the sky, full of wonder at the different colours, while Clark's were on his son. He would have to work hard to repair the relationship after first the bumbling reveal of his identity, the X-Kryptonite incidents, as well as the fact he'd been spending more time with Jordan out of necessity.
"Candice told me what happened at the diner. Did he really try to punch you?"
"Yup," Clark smiled. One of the few times he allowed Superman to bleed into Clark, and it made him the cool dad.
"How were you able to control your strength?'
"I had to make it look good for the Cushings, and the other staff. I couldn't go, breaking another guy's arm because it's not something Clark Kent should be able to do," he said. Jon marveled at the restraint his father showed, and again by the fact he'd crafted this entirely separate identity as Clark Kent.
The fireworks were coming less frequently, and Clark knew life would soon intrude. "I remember taking you to Fourth of July fireworks when you were a kid. Your mom would watch from the terrace with Jordan, but you wanted to get as close as you could; experience everything, like your mother does." The feeling of 4-year old Jonathan, soft and trusting in his arms, as he sped them closer. "Don't lose that. She wouldn't want you to, and neither do I." he said.
Jon heard every word, and remembered too. The feeling of safety, and closeness to his father; there was nothing more he wanted than to get back to that, but in the wake of his decisions of the last year or so, it felt as if he wasn't there yet. He was silent, keeping the moment a while longer "Ooh, that's a good one," Jon's eyes shone, and for the first time realized what a hard time his mom's illness was for him. "It must be hard for you too. Seeing her like that, and being able to do nothing but hold her hair back."
Clark appreciated his son's compassion. If he allowed to think of life without Lois Lane, he might lose it; she made him what he was. "It is. But, she needs to acknowledge it, and so do we."
Jon sensed his father begin to pull away; the result of not wanting to appear weak in front of his son. He squeezed his hand. "If you want to talk about anything, talk to me," he said.
"Same," Clark replied pulling Jonathan into a hug. The fireworks finished, leaving a blanket of night-time silence. Jon looked back at his father splashing the remains of his wine into the front flowerbeds. The moment dissolved.
