For those of us who remember the 80s in the UK, Fry's Chocolate cream was dark chocolate with a creamy filling. There was a mint version too and also Fry's Five Centres, each square was a different flavour and if I remember correctly they were a little bit revolting. But what Harry wants, Dempsey will find.
The following day they were back on the stakeout of the seemingly uninhabited semi. A second tip off had led them to the same address, this time with rumours that a local gang leader was using the property as his base for a push into new territory.
There had been one man in a dark suit who had knocked and waited and then left when there was no reply, since then nothing.
'Dempsey drummed his fingers on the dashboard.'
'For God's sake, will you stop that.' Harry hissed.
'Oh, I forgot you were on a short fuse at the moment.'
'I'm not on a short fuse as you call it Dempsey, I am feeling a little ill and justifiably irritated.'
Dempsey blew out a long breath and looked across at her. 'Can I get you anything Harry?'
'Like what?' She looked at him with suspicion.
'Like I don't know. There's a line of shops back there, I saw a drugstore, do you need painkillers or anything.'
'What I need is chocolate.'
'Chocolate, I can do that, any kind in particular?'
Harry thought about it for a minute. 'You know Fry's chocolate cream?'
'Fry's what..?'
'That's the brand, Frys. Chocolate cream, it's in a blue and white packet.'
'Okay'
'Well they do one called Five Centres, each square is a different flavour, they're not that easy to find but right now I could eat two.'
'Fry's chocolate cream, soft centred..'
'Five centred.'
Ten minutes later he was back and dumped a carrier bag onto her lap.
'Um, no five centres thingy I'm afraid. I did ask' he added in case he was accused of not making enough effort.
Harry unpacked two chocolate cream bars, a Galaxy, a bottle of fizzy orange and a packet of paracetamol.
'Mmm' Harry sighed in satisfaction at the first squares of chocolate. ''You know you're really quite useful, Dempsey. I think I'll keep you, for a while anyway.'
He laughed even though his heart ached with all the things he wanted to say but couldn't.
They sat for a while in silence, watching the house as Harry polished off two of the chocolate bars.
'You're unusual for a man you know' she said her mouth full of chocolate 'you don't seem to be squeamish about you know..periods'
'Oh uh, no.' He looked sheepish. 'Well I have an older sister Gill, I've told you 'bout her, makes you look like a sweet little kitten' he raised his eyebrow in a smirk when she slapped his arm. 'My big sister made sure her little brothers knew exactly what girls had to go through every month, she used to say you boys will have wives one day and I don't want you hiding away while she has her monthly, you've gotta know what's going on. Tommy and I, we were mortified.'
'Well thank you Gill, that's all I can say.' Harry said with a smile.
'I'll tell her next time I speak to her' he grinned. 'You gonna eat all that yourself?'
She reluctantly broke him off a single square of chocolate.
He held it up in mock disdain.'You know you're all heart Harry.'

A week later they were in another street, a run down part of town with shuttered shop fronts and litter blowing across the pavements. They were watching a betting shop, their man had gone in but had never come out. Their orders were to stay put and to tail him when he emerged. Dempsey was antsy; he wanted some action and thought the whole thing could be finished quickly if they went in and confronted the gang leader who was almost certainly using the shop as a front for money laundering.
But he did what he was told because he knew he was in Harry's good books at the moment and wanted to stay there.
'I wonder how many hours of our lives we waste watching buildings.' Harry said.
'Yeah I dunno, we could make a second career as real estate agents or architects or something.'
She smiled and leaned back in the driver's seat. 'Got any chocolate in this car Dempsey?'
He gave a slow smile, he'd been waiting for this moment, 'close your eyes Harry'
'We're meant to be watching the shop.'
'Yeah, I'll watch the shop just close your eyes for a minute.'
She looked suspicious 'what are you up to?'
He held her gaze, a smile playing on his lips. She shook her head and leaned back, closing her eyes.
Dempsey opened the glove compartment and Harry felt something land in her lap.
'okay open them'
She gave a squeal of delight, 'Five Centres! Dempsey, where did you get this?'
'Oh I stopped off to buy gum at some gas station, can't remember where.' He bluffed. He wasn't going to tell her about the four miles he'd driven and the eight shops he'd visited, he would never admit that when he found the elusive chocolate bar at a scruffy newsagent's in Southwark he'd bought the entire stock. And he wasn't ready to tell her how it seemed to have become his mission in life to make her happy.
Harry moaned in pleasure as she polished off the last square 'mmm, don't suppose you have any more?'
Dempsey gave a dramatic sigh and pulled a second bar from his inside pocket.
Harry gasped and laid her hand on his arm. 'Oh Dempsey I think I love you!'
Harry's cheeks turned pink as she realised what she'd said and their eyes met as her words hung in the air between them. They were saved by Chas' voice as the radio crackled into life. 'Control to Charlie Five.' Dempsey picked up the handset, tearing his eyes away from his partner as she nibbled at the chocolate bar, her cheeks still flushed. 'Charlie five to control.'
Chas told them the plans had changed, Spikings wanted a briefing with the whole team later that afternoon.
Dempsey huffed about their wasted morning as he switched on the engine. He glanced across at Makepeace who was watching him in amusement.
'What?' He ran his hand through his hair.
'Nothing.'
'Oh Harry!' He smiled as he glanced in his rearview mirror and pulled the car out into the road as they headed back to the office.
