Chapter 6: The Competition
The following week, Summer was scrolling through Instagram when she saw something that caught her eye. It was a flyer for a writing competition being held at Tree Hill High, and the prize was a full scholarship to a prestigious writing program.
Summer had always loved writing, and she knew she had a real talent for it. She felt like this competition was made for her. But as she read the details, she saw that the deadline was just a few days away.
She was torn. She had so many other things to do, between schoolwork and spending time with her friends. But the thought of winning the scholarship was too tempting to resist.
She started working on her submission that same day, pouring all of her creativity and energy into her writing. She worked on it for hours every day, determined to make it perfect.
But as the deadline approached, she realized that she wasn't the only one who was interested in the competition. Lucas and Nathan were both working on submissions as well, and they were just as determined to win.
Summer found herself in a state of panic. She had no idea what their writing was like, but she knew that they were both talented in their own ways. She couldn't help but wonder if her submission was good enough to compete.
The day of the competition arrived, and Summer was a bundle of nerves. She sat in the audience, watching as Lucas and Nathan took turns reading their submissions.
She was blown away by their writing. Lucas had written a beautiful poem about the ocean, while Nathan had written a touching story about a boy and his dog. She couldn't deny that they were both amazing writers.
But when it was her turn to read, she took a deep breath and dove in. She read a short story that she had written about a girl who discovers a hidden talent for singing. As she read, she could feel the audience's attention on her, and she knew that she had their interest.
When she finished, there was a moment of silence. But then the audience erupted into applause, and Summer felt a surge of relief and pride. She had done it. She had put herself out there and it had paid off.
In the end, the judges announced that there was a tie between Lucas and Summer. They would both receive the scholarship to the writing program. Nathan was gracious in defeat, and Summer couldn't help but feel grateful to have two talented and supportive friends like the Scott brothers.
As they left the competition, Lucas put his arm around Summer's shoulders. "You were amazing," he said.
Summer smiled up at him. "So were you," she said. "We make a pretty good team."
