Chapter 6

Sam had shed his uniform and stepped into the bathroom to start the shower. He responded to two other calls before his shift was over and ran down some videos of the areas where the disappearances took place. Since he didn't have time to look at them, Sam was going to take his laptop with him to the motel office and watch them when things got quiet.

Once the water was hot, Sam stepped under the spray and let it wash over his body. He stood under the strong spray for a few minutes before wetting his hair to shampoo it. He soaped down his body and then rinsed before shutting the water off. Sam reached for a towel and dried himself before stepping from the tub. After putting on his briefs, Sam strolled into the main room and looked in his duffle for clean clothes.

Stu had told him there was a washer/dryer set up in a utility room for employee use only and he could use it to do his laundry. Sam was happy about that so he wouldn't have to find a laundromat. He was going to step out around ten pm and put his clothes in to wash and go back around eleven pm to put them in the dryer. That way when he got off at midnight they should be done and ready to fold.

Since he still had an hour before his shift started, Sam decided to relax and watch a little television before heading to the office. He flipped through the channels and stopped on a documentary about Jack the Ripper. He didn't usually get to watch things that interested him if Dean was around. This was a treat for him, and he sat back to enjoy the show.

As the show ended, Sam turned off the television and went to the bathroom to brush his teeth and use it. He checked his reflection before stepping out and grabbing his computer bag and the half a sub from the mini fridge for his dinner. He grabbed the keys and headed out for the office.

"Good afternoon Sam, how are you fitting in at the sheriff's department?" Stu asked him when Sam walked into the office.

"Hello, and I'm doing okay. The calls haven't been that bad and I'm reviewing the missing person cases for Sheriff Watts. I'm hoping I can shed some light on them."

"If it stops another person going missing, I hope you can too. Well, I'm heading to the back. If you need me, you know to call me." Stu pushed the stool back and got up to leave letting Sam take over.

Sam moved behind the counter and took a seat on the stool as he checked the counter out to be sure it was orderly. He glanced at the small television mounted on the wall to see what Stu had been watching. He pulled the remote out and flipped through the channels until he found the local news and left it there for now.

With it being Friday night, there were a few more guests that checked in when it began to get dark. Things slowed down by eight pm and Sam decided to look at the videos he had of the area where the victims disappeared. After an hour of scanning through the numerous videos, Sam finally saw something. He pulled out his notes to check before looking at the video again.

He slowed it down where he could watch frame by frame. Sam had found the second victim's car driving from a bar and it was a woman driving it. The picture was grainy, but he could make out her features after he played with the settings. He saved the frame so he could print it out when he went back to work the next day. He finished watching the other videos trying to find the other cars and on the last one spotted the last victim's car but couldn't tell who was driving it, except it looked like a woman.

Sam leaned back in the stool and let his mind sort through what he knew and what possible monsters would fit the bill. He looked up when a young guy walked in asking for extra towels and when to the storage room to get them. Everything was quiet for the remainder of the shift. Sam locked up the office and hurried to his room to get his dirty clothes and took them to the utility room to wash them. Once they were washing, he headed back and checked the time, so he'd know when to go back to put them in the dryer.

Just before it was time to lock up, Sam counted the money in the drawer and made note before putting it in a bag and dropping it into a lockbox for Stu the following day. He made a few notes of the new arrivals for Stu and then headed for the utility room to fold his clothes and go back to his room. He was feeling good about himself now that he had something to go on and maybe was one step closer to stopping any other people from being kidnapped.

The following day Sam was up and ready ahead of schedule since he wanted to get to the sheriff's office to check the traffic cameras and see if he could find the cars and get a better shot of who was driving. And maybe he'd get lucky and could track the cars and see where they went.

"You're in early this morning Sam," Marge greeted him when he came through the doors.

"Yes, and I have a Danish and coffee for you," Sam replied placing a bag and cup on her desk smiling happily when he saw her face light up.

"Why aren't you the sweetest thing," she cooed peeking into the bag. "The sheriff is going to be a little late coming in today, so right now, you're in charge."

"Oh wow, okay," Sam stammered not sure if there was something special he needed to do.

"Don't worry, make some coffee and settle in. It's not as glamorous as it sounds."

"Thanks," Sam sighed in relief. "I'll be at my desk if you need me."

"Alright dear. I'll take care of things out here."

Sam stepped through the door behind Marge and went to his desk. He logged on to the computer and waited for it to boot up. Once that was done, Sam pulled up his email account to retrieve the photo he had emailed himself. Once he had it printed out, Sam studied it for a moment before logging onto the traffic camera program and looked for the date in question. It took him a brief time before finally finding the car and switched from camera to camera to track it. He lost it when the car drove out of town and pulled up a map to see what was in that direction.

There were a couple ways the car could have gone, but Sam focused on places that had abandoned buildings and were isolated. There were two sites that fit the bill and Sam wrote down the addresses of both, deciding to check them out after the sheriff got in. He looked at his phone when it started beeping and picked it up.

"Hello Marge," Sam greeted her.

"My dear that Danish was delicious. I got a call from the hardware store on Third Street, seems someone broke in last night."

"I'm on my way," Sam replied getting up and pulling his gun from the desk drawer and holstering it. He grabbed his hat on the way out and accepted the paper Marge was holding up as he passed her.

"Be careful Sam."

"Oh, and when the sheriff comes in, tell him I'm checking out a lead on the missing person cases."

"I will. He should be in shortly."

"Bye Marge." Sam headed to his car and got it, glancing at the address before pulling out and heading across town to the hardware store. After he was finished with checking out the break in, he was going to check at least one of the sites out to see if it could be the hideout. He didn't know what the victims were being used for, but he was sure it wasn't good.

The paved road turned into gravel as Sam slowly made his way down it to the first location he wanted to check out. It turned out to be a salvage yard and it brought back memories of a gruff, but kind older hunter and acquaintance of their father they had seen occasionally if they were nearby or John needed some research done for a hunt, named Bobby Singer.

The gate was locked, and Sam stopped by it so he could see if anyone was around. He got out and walked to the gate noticing it was a brand-new lock and looked through the wire inside. A sixth sense started tingling as he thought about the place. What better location to get rid of the victims' cars than a salvage yard.

Sam followed the fence around the corner and on the backside found another smaller gate. He looked around and didn't see anyone. He squatted down to see the lock better and pulled out his lock pick kit. When he got it opened, Sam stepped inside and cautiously started looking around. He headed for the buildings off to the left to check them out.

It wasn't until he was at the third building that he found something. Once he had the door opened, Sam gagged with the smell that came out. He covered his nose and mouth before stepping inside to look at the covered mounds. When he pulled the tarp back, he found three dead bodies. Sam grimaced and held his breath as he tried to examine the one on top. He turned his head and looked at the bite marks on the guy's throat and noticed how pale he seemed like all the blood was drained out of him.

Not able to take the smell any longer, he stumbled from the building and closed the door drawing in some fresh air. Sam knew he had the right place and continued his search. He found a building marked office and eased around the side of it toward the front door. He looked in a window and started to turn when everything went dark, and his limp body slumped to the ground.

A/N: Sam finds more than he bargained for at the salvage yard. You know I love to leave you guessing. Thanks for coming on this journey with me. I do like reviews/comments. NC
