Chapter 3: A Complicated Bond

Days turned into weeks, and Ryan and Summer fell into a comfortable routine of hanging out as friends. They watched movies, went to parties, and shared inside jokes that nobody else could understand.

But despite their efforts to keep things platonic, there was still an undeniable chemistry between them. Every time they hugged or high-fived, Ryan felt a thrill run through him, and he couldn't help but wonder if Summer felt the same way.

One night, they were hanging out on the pier, watching the waves crash against the shore. Summer was leaning against Ryan, her head on his shoulder, and he could feel her breath on his neck.

For a moment, he felt like he was on top of the world, like nothing could bring him down. But then he remembered that they were just friends, and he couldn't help but feel a sense of disappointment.

Summer must have sensed his mood shift because she pulled away from him and looked up at him with a concerned expression.

"Are you okay?" she asked, her eyes searching his.

Ryan hesitated for a moment, unsure of how to express his feelings. But then he decided to take a chance.

"I just... I don't know. I feel like there's something between us, you know?" he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Summer looked at him, her expression softening. "Yeah, I know what you mean. But we agreed to just be friends, right?"

Ryan nodded, feeling a sense of sadness wash over him. "Yeah, I know. It's just... complicated."

Summer took his hand, giving it a squeeze. "I know it is. But I don't want to lose you as a friend. You're too important to me."

Ryan felt a pang of warmth in his chest, and he knew that she meant it. Despite everything, he was glad to have her in his life, even if it was just as a friend.

As they walked back to the car, Ryan felt a sense of gratitude and contentment wash over him. He didn't know what the future held for him and Summer, but for now, he was happy just to have her by his side.
