Chapter 5: The Distance Grows

After the incident at the party, things between Ryan and Summer became even more complicated. They tried to act like nothing had happened, but there was an unspoken tension between them that they couldn't ignore.

Ryan found himself pulling away from Summer, feeling like he couldn't be around her without wanting more. He started spending more time by himself, going for long walks on the beach and listening to music.

Summer noticed the change in him, but she didn't know what to do about it. She missed her friend, but she didn't want to push him if he needed space.

One day, while Ryan was walking on the beach, he saw Summer sitting on a bench, looking out at the ocean. He hesitated for a moment, unsure of whether to approach her or not. But then he decided to take a chance.

"Hey," he said, sitting down next to her.

Summer looked at him, her expression guarded. "Hey."

They sat in silence for a few moments, watching the waves crash against the shore. Ryan felt like he should say something, but he didn't know what.

Finally, Summer spoke. "Look, I know things have been weird between us lately, and I'm sorry. I don't know what to do to make things right."

Ryan looked at her, feeling a sense of sadness wash over him. "I don't know either. I just... I need some time, you know?"

Summer nodded, looking down at her hands. "Yeah, I get it. But I don't want to lose you as a friend. You mean too much to me."

Ryan felt a pang of warmth in his chest, and he knew that she meant it. Despite everything, he was glad to have her in his life, even if they couldn't be together.

As they walked back to their cars, Ryan felt a sense of gratitude and contentment wash over him. He didn't know what the future held for him and Summer, but for now, he was happy just to have her as a friend.
