Chapter 6: The Unexpected Confession
As the weeks went by, Ryan and Summer fell back into their comfortable friendship. They still had their moments of tension and awkwardness, but for the most part, things felt normal again.
One night, they were hanging out at Summer's house, watching a movie and eating popcorn. Ryan was feeling relaxed and happy, enjoying the feeling of just being with her without any pressure.
But then something unexpected happened. As they were sitting on the couch, Summer leaned her head on Ryan's shoulder, and he felt a rush of warmth spread through him. He turned to look at her, and she looked up at him with a small smile on her face.
In that moment, Ryan knew that he had to tell her how he felt. He couldn't keep it inside anymore.
"Summer, there's something I need to tell you," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Summer looked at him, her expression curious. "What is it?"
Ryan took a deep breath, feeling like he was about to jump off a cliff. "I... I think I'm in love with you."
Summer's eyes widened, and she sat up straight, looking at him with surprise. "What?"
Ryan nodded, feeling like he was about to burst with emotion. "I know it's crazy, and I know you're with Zach, but I can't help how I feel. I've tried to push it aside, but it just keeps coming back."
Summer was silent for a few moments, looking at him with a mix of confusion and sadness. "Ryan, I... I don't know what to say. I care about you so much, but I can't just break up with Zach because you have feelings for me."
Ryan nodded, feeling like his heart was breaking. He knew that she was right, but he couldn't help but feel like he had to try.
"I know, I know. I don't want to come between you two, I just had to tell you how I feel. I understand if you don't feel the same way."
Summer looked at him for a moment, and then she did something unexpected. She leaned in and kissed him, her lips soft and warm against his.
For a moment, Ryan felt like he was in a dream. He had wanted this for so long, but he had never expected it to happen.
But then Summer pulled away, looking at him with tears in her eyes. "I'm sorry, Ryan. I do care about you, but I can't just break up with Zach like this. I need some time to figure things out."
Ryan nodded, feeling a sense of disappointment wash over him. But at the same time, he felt like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. He had told her how he felt, and that was all that mattered. Whatever happened next, he knew that he had taken a step forward.
