Chapter 9: Facing the Music
The next morning, Ryan and Summer woke up in each other's arms, feeling happy and content. They spent the morning lounging in bed, talking and laughing, before finally getting up to start the day.
As they headed downstairs, they heard the sound of voices coming from the kitchen. Ryan's heart sank as he realized who it was - the Cohens had returned from their night out.
Summer squeezed his hand reassuringly, sensing his nerves. "It's okay," she whispered. "We'll figure this out together."
They entered the kitchen to find Sandy and Kirsten Cohen sitting at the table, drinking coffee and chatting. They looked up as Ryan and Summer walked in, their expressions turning to surprise as they saw the two of them together.
"Morning," Ryan said, trying to sound casual.
"Morning," Sandy said, eyeing them both carefully. "Sleep well?"
Summer nodded, a small smile on her face. "Yeah, we did."
There was an awkward silence as everyone sipped their coffee, unsure of what to say next. Finally, Kirsten spoke up.
"Ryan, can we talk to you for a minute?"
Ryan felt his nerves spike, but he nodded, following Kirsten out into the living room. Sandy and Summer stayed behind in the kitchen, their eyes fixed on them.
Kirsten took a deep breath before speaking. "Ryan, I want you to know that we care about you. You're like a son to us, and we want you to be happy. But we're also worried about you."
Ryan felt a lump form in his throat. He knew what Kirsten was getting at - their relationship with Summer was complicated, and they didn't want to see him get hurt.
"I understand," he said, his voice shaking slightly. "But I care about Summer, Kirsten. And I want to be with her."
Kirsten sighed, looking at him with a mixture of concern and understanding. "I know you do, Ryan. And I'm not saying you can't be with her. But you have to understand that this is a difficult situation for all of us."
Ryan nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over him. He knew it wouldn't be easy, but he was glad to have Kirsten's support.
"Thank you," he said softly. "I'll do whatever it takes to make this work."
Kirsten smiled at him, patting his arm. "I know you will, Ryan. Just be careful, okay?"
Ryan nodded, feeling grateful for the conversation. As he made his way back to the kitchen, he felt a sense of optimism wash over him. He knew it wouldn't be easy, but he was ready to face the challenges head-on, with Summer by his side.
