Early the next morning Luigi awoke to find Mario was already gone. On the kitchen table, he saw a note that read, "couldn't wait so I left early. I will let you know when I get there."
Luigi stared at the note and couldn't help but smile. It was so like Mario to jump at the idea of something exciting. But at the same time, it made him a little sad. With Mario out of the house, Luigi began to feel lonely. It's not the first time the brothers had been separated for a short time but after everything that happened it just felt different somehow. It felt depressing.
Luigi didn't want that to hold him back though. If he wanted to be with his brother faster he had to suck it up and move on with the day. He quickly ate breakfast and went to finish the outstanding jobs he had.
It took almost the whole day but Luigi was finally able to finish them all with little trouble except for a few blunders he had to fix. Probably got a couple of bruises as well but it wasn't anything he wasn't used to. He was more determined to leave and meet up with his brother.
As he got ready he looked at his phone still waiting for Mario's call. All day he looked expecting to see a message or missed call but there was never anything. Luigi began to worry. It wasn't like Mario to leave him out of the loop. If anything he thought Mario would let him know of anything cool he saw on the way to the mansion but nothing.
"Mario?" he asked himself with worry. He couldn't shake the feeling something was wrong but he had to push through.
He got ready and though the sun was going to set soon he still made his way to the map's location. What eased his worry is that, unlike the unknown Mushroom Kingdom, the mansion was in Brooklyn. A place he somewhat was familiar with. True it was more in the country but with it being in his original world he wouldn't have to worry about anything weird or extreme happening.
He drove for a while while also leaving an ear out for his phone but there were still no calls or messages. Luigi also kept his eye out on the road on the off chance Mario got broken down or was still on the way but instead, he found that there was no one. No Mario or anything. It began to creep him out since there was no sign of life on the road he was on but it was the right way so he drove forward.
After the sun had disappeared, Luigi finally caught a glimpse of a huge mansion. It was well hidden behind a few dead trees but it was there with lights shining through the windows. After seeing the huge building he was astonished.
At first, he thought it would be run down and broken but to his surprise, it was quite magnificent. It was old but looked to be in top condition. No holes, scuffs, or creaks. It looked about as good as new. But even so, he couldn't stop thinking that something was wrong. Something was not right about the mansion. It felt very cold and very eerie. Before he could even knock on the door it opened seemingly by itself which startled him.
He let out a whimper and backed away from the mansion but to his surprise, a man came out in a nice suit and tie. 'You must be Luigi?" he said politely.
Luigi was still startled but he was able to reply, "Y-yes."
"I have been expecting you. Please come in." the man said, gesturing to Luigi to come in.
Luigi wasn't sure but more than his fear he wanted to know one thing, "has my brother, a shorter guy in red been here?"
The man thought for a moment, "I don't believe so. Are you expecting him?"
"Yes," Luigi said very disappointed and confused.
"Then I will keep my eyes out for him. The moment he arrives I will let you know." the man said. "For now it is late so it is best to come in and go to bed."
Luigi never realized but he was pretty tired. Despite being terrified he couldn't help but lose to his exhaustion. He walked in and the man led him to his room.
"My name is Bleck. I was the original owner of the property before offering it up in a contest," he explained.
"Yeah. It is a marvelous home. Why give it away?." Luigi asked, not understanding why someone would just give away a huge house.
"This place was where I got my start. Here I grow to where I am today. Since then I have gained other properties and hardly visited here anymore. I couldn't bear to leave it to rot so I figured I would put it up and give it to someone who will hopefully start on their own success journey."
Hearing that Luigi was not too thrilled. He was far from a person who can be successful. He was not even someone people remembered. "Maybe you should find someone else," Luigi said.
"Why?" Bleck asked.
"Because I am not someone who will ever find success. My brother is a better fit than me." Luigi said, tearing up. It was the truth but it was still hard to admit.
"You never know what the future holds. You might feel that way now but later it could change," he said with a smile.
Luigi felt happy that someone else besides his brother said that to him but something still felt off. When Luigi looked at the man he could tell there was something else on his mind. Something that was not encouragement to get better. It didn't help that no matter how deep in the mansion they went there was still this cold and eerie feeling in the air.
"We are here," Bleck said, opening a door to a huge room.
Luigi walked in and when the light came on it was an amazing room. The bed was clean, the art on the walls was spectacular and there was just so much to look at but Luigi found himself taking a long yawn.
"Get some sleep. We will do the tour of the house tomorrow and don't worry if your brother arrives I will let you know." Bleck said before closing the door.
Luigi was still a bit scared but he was able to crawl into bed, get under the soft covers and drift to sleep. Unbeknownst to him someone was watching him. Many were watching him and despite Luigi not waking up he began to toss and turn until finally, they all disappeared. Luigi stopped moving and slept the rest of the night.
