When Desi had arrived, Tony and Nat were waiting for her, and Nat gave her a brief hug.
"Welcome to the compound." Nat greeted her, making Desi smile.
"Thanks, Nat." she whispered before pulling away.
"Come on in, let me show you around." Tony told her, guiding her through the compound.
To say it was a huge was an understatement. The building was enormous, but she couldn't wait to explore the large building. Taking the elevator, Tony and Nat showed her the training rooms, transportation, and agent filled rooms for research and etcetera.
Taking her to the top of the floor, they introduced her to the many dormitories and their lounge room with the kitchen and everything; it almost reminded her of her old home.
"This is really nice, Sir Tony." Desi said, looking around in awe.
"Thanks, why don't you go ahead and pick your room really quick?" Tony encouraged her.
The team wanted to make sure she had the time of her life here, hoping she'd stay with them when the week was up. The team reviewed the video clips of her fighting; she was braver than they last remembered from her training, but she still kept her compassion- her mercy, unlike her Deadpool.
"Yeah, sure." Desi said when she went down the hall.
She felt nervous, looking around when she was trying to figure out which room was available when she saw the door at the end of the hall on the right open up. Bucky came out with Steve, and Desi gave them a small wave with a big smile on her face.
"Hello boys." Desi chimed, noticing their small smirks before she looked around the doors, looking around curiously.
"Looking for a vacant room?" Steve asked, noticing her nod in response.
"Yes, sirrrr." Desi said playfully, making him chuckle.
Bucky noticed his behavior and couldn't help but be jealous.
"The room next to mine is open, if you'd like. It's between Clint and I's." Steve offered.
"Oh, yes please." Desi said gratefully but was alarmed when Bucky took her forearm, opening the door behind Steve.
"Use this one."
Desi looked at him in confusion but whispered a soft thank you before she entered the dorm room. She immediately gasped when she saw the queen-size bed against the wall and dropped her bag, jumping on it with a big squeal; oblivious to the glances she was receiving.
"Oh my god, it's a bed! With a freaking pillow!" Desi screamed as she burrowed under the blanket.
Tony and Nat heard the commotion and couldn't help but chuckle, not even Bucky could stop his smile when she rolled herself up in the blanket like a burrito.
"Can I stay in bed all day? Seriously, it's been MONTHS since I've had one of these!"
"A blanket?" Steve questioned, with a smirk.
"A bed, silly! Oh MY GOD!" She squealed, throwing herself back. Tony frowned at that comment, he didn't realize she really went without furniture.
"Tony wants to start working on a suit for you; so not all day, I'm afraid." Nat told her.
Desi sighed, rolling herself out of the blanket and onto her stomach, caressing the bed tenderly.
"Alas, one day my love…we will be together." Desi said and slid off the bed.
"I'm ready."
MmMmMmm
All day and night, Desi and Tony worked hard on the different designs of her suit, trying what worked best for her and what didn't; but she powered through it until Tony finally relented. Ending their fun night together with experiments and random dancing, Desi made her way back to the dorm floor.
She knew she wasn't going to be able to sleep peacefully, always struggling to sleep at night but she was also too energized. Exploring the kitchen, she realized she could make a few dessert items and was elated with herself. She enjoyed baking more than anything, but she never had anyone to share them with; now she did.
Bucky could hear the commotion in the kitchen, and checked to see what was happening when he saw Desi standing there, hovering around the stove. She looked so focused, but he saw her almost relaxed somehow.
"Des?"
She spun around to him, and smiled when she saw him, noticing on the top of the stove was a plate of treats.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you…I just made some brownies," Desi told him, "Do you want some?"
He was hesitant to say no, wanting her to get some sleep but he could only imagine being a new place was affecting her somehow. Plus, he wouldn't say no to them. He approached her as he let out air from his nose, catching her smile as she lifted the plate to him. He smirked, taking one from her plate before he took a bite.
"It's good."
"Oh, thank God." Desi said, letting out breath she didn't realize she was holding.
"Can't sleep?" Bucky asked and she shook her head.
"No…but I'll adjust." Desi told him, hoping he'd let it go.
"Why don't we get you to bed, huh?" Bucky encouraged her, helping usher her to her bedroom.
Desi didn't fight him, she had to go to bed eventually; maybe she could sleep with his help? Going into her room, Desi cuddled under the bed sheets but was surprised when Bucky sat on the bed with her above the sheets.
"I'll stay until you fall asleep." Bucky started softly, and she cuddled up closed against him.
"Are you sure?" Desi asked.
"I'm leaving for a mission tomorrow; I doubt I'll get any sleep tonight." Bucky assured her, but a pout came to her face.
"For how long?" Desi asked curiously.
"Just a few days. Sadly, Clint and I were unable to get out of this one. Nat and Tony will still be here though in the meantime." Bucky told her and she sighed heavily.
"I'll miss you; you know? I just got use to you being around all the time." Desi confessed.
"Same, doll. But it'll be for a little while." Bucky assured her.
"Can you get my bag for me? I have something for you." Desi asked him.
He slipped out of the bed and did as he asked, grabbing her bag before he came to sit down with her. Sitting beside her once more, he handed her the bag, and she quickly dug her hand into the bag before she pulled out two miniature figures for him.
Carved in wood was a male buck deer and a female doe deer with two strings attached on them.
"I made them for you as a memento for you as a thank you…" she said.
"Thanks Des." He said softly as she yawned softly, closing her eyes as she snuggled closer to him.
He watched her until she fell asleep beside him, and he couldn't help but wonder what made her so comfortable with him when others were still cautious of him? Running his hands through her hair, he stayed until the crack of dawn.
wee-wee
Over the next few days, Bruce had joined in on the construction of her suit but with nothing still completed, she decided to go back into the kitchen to calm her nerves. Putting together an apple pie, she had just finished taking it out of the oven when Steve walked in.
"Is that…an apple pie?" Steve asked, and she couldn't stop the big smile on her face.
"But of course. Do you want a slice? It's fresh." Desi attempted.
"I really shouldn't but I will if you will have one with me." Steve answered.
Desi giggled, picking up the stack of plates beside her, "Already ahead of you."
Steve smirked, rolling up his sleeves as she cut a piece for him before cutting one for her. Desi had stepped over to the freezer, taking out the carton of vanilla ice cream as he took out some spoons for him.
"You like ice cream with yours too?" Steve questioned.
"We can't be friends if you can't accept this." Desi warned him, but he chuckled.
"Actually, I was hoping to get some as well."
Desi looked at him in surprise but smiled, scooping up a big scoop of ice cream.
"Is this enough?"
"Yes, ma'am."
Desi rolled her eyes with a smirk as they sat together at the counter, eating in a comforting silence together. Steve had enjoyed her being at the compound, more than he thought, but he knew this was short-lived.
The team were enjoying these kinds of nights, the smell of something sweet: it was something nice to look forward to at the end of the day. Taking a bite, he moaned, it was as delicious as it looked, and it made Desi smile proudly at his response.
"It's good?"
"It's really good." Steve said, feeling nostalgic as he took another bite.
"Thanks, Rogers. So, how many missions have you been on since we last met?" she asked, taking another bite of her food. He threw a side glance at her, and she instantly giggled.
"That many, huh? Have you had any time to rest or relax?" Desi asked, concerned.
"This is the first chance I've had to relax, to be honest." Steve told her as he finished his plate. He saw her worrisome look and he knew she was holding back on lecturing him. He stood with a sigh, walking into the living room.
"I'll work on it at my own pace, Desi." He told her but she merely pursed her lips.
"Unacceptable, but I have no choice; I can't force you." She said, not wanting to fight with him.
"Enough on me, how are things with you?" Steve asked.
"It's only been a couple of days but I'm adjusting as well as expected., and we get along great, I couldn't ask for a better partner." Desi said simply, not wanting to overshare or cause anything to make Steve worry.
"I was worried, but I'm glad to hear that." Steve smiled at Desi, attempting to tease the tension. He watched her as she came to sit on the sofa and remembered the first time, he met her. Steve was filled with anger for being called back to arms, and he vented all that anger not only on Tony but also on her.
Steve realized now Desi was no soldier, but she was simply trying to prove herself and he felt he needed to make it up to her. He looked down as he felt saddened, remembering Peggy. He remembers the promise he gave her, the woman he considered the love of his life gone from him. He kept giving, and instead of choosing to be selfish, he rose to be a hero.
Desi frowned, feeling Steve's emotions running off him and she slowly approached him. She lifted her hand up to his cheek, but he softly grabbed her hand, stopping her. His eyes pierced hers and she instantly regretted her action, not wanting to make him uncomfortable.
"I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to look…I just wanted to take your pain for a moment." Desi explained, trying to pull her hand back. Her eyes widened in surprise when his hand tightened around her, keeping her still.
"What do you feel?" Steve asked. He never took the time to understand her ability but that was his fault. Today we would begin to learn about her abilities more.
"Without touching you, I can sense your sadness and your hurt. There's anguish there but it's not as intense as it once was." Desi told him the best way she could.
He sighed, hanging his head down in defeat as he released her hand, but it only worried about him more.
"Steve, what's wrong?" Desi asked, hating to see him distraught. Steve was never one to hide away what was on his mind but to see him like this made her heart turn.
"Steve, do you…want to talk about it?"
He looked up at her, his eyes hardened.
"It'll be the last time I ask." Desi whispered, smiling apologetically.
"I don't want to talk about it…" Steve said, but his mind went back to when she read Bucky for the first time. It was intimate but she saw and felt everything.
"I'm not going to force you, but whenever you're ready, I'm here for you Rogers." Desi said warmly.
Steve's eyes never left Desi's when he slowly took her hand, bringing her hand up to his cheek. Desi took a hard swallow, gently opening her palm to him, but her eyes gave him a questioning look.
Steve nodded only once, and Desi smiled sadly before she closed her eyes, and she brought her other hand to his other cheek. She gasped softly when she was hit with his memories.
Like Buck, Desi saw Steve's moments with Buck but when he met a scientist and a beautiful brunette woman, she felt Steve's emotions shift to love and adoration. Desi saw him training in camp, him becoming the masculine and tall Steve before him.
He became close to Peggy Carter, his memories of her beautiful dark brown hair, her beautiful brown eyes shining back at him, always wearing red lipstick in each moment together.
Instead of becoming a soldier, he became a poster boy for the military. Desi felt Steve's struggle when he didn't sign up for that life until he heard Buck was in trouble. She watched as Steve saved Buck, and the day that he lost Buck. Desi began to cry, her heart dropped when she saw Buck slip from the train.
Steve wrapped an arm around her when he saw Desi's knees wobble, helping her steady herself as she went to her knees. He was about to pat the top of her head, but he froze, hesitant if he should. Desi let out another cry and Steve allowed himself to comfort her, slowly stroking his fingers through the top of her head.
Desi watched as Steve faced the man with a red skull-like face and had managed to commandeer the ship but realized at that moment he wasn't making it back home. He promised Peggy a dance when he came back…before he crashed into the ice.
Desi let out a blood cry as she felt her whole body succumb to the ice and the pain, her body shaking as she felt a cut suddenly on her forearm, the familiar stinging sensation hitting her. The last scene Desi saw was when Steve woke up, realizing he was in a contained room, and broke out.
Barefoot and running through the streets of New York City, he realized he was no longer in the city he once grew up in. She quickly pushed herself past the ordeal of Loki and found himself in his new apartment. He was given the file of Peggy Carter and felt his pain, but he refused to cry, though his body wouldn't let him.
Steve felt guilty for doing this to Desi, continuing to stroke her hair as she felt her hands slip to his shoulders, feeling her rest her head against his shoulder as she tried to recollect herself. His emotions came back, and he was upset with himself.
"You really loved her," She spoke softly, but he could hear her, "I'm sorry you came here without a choice. You must be so lonely..."
Steve closed his eyes, feeling overwhelmed with sadness, his emotions held together but were failing horribly.
"It's okay to miss her, you can let go." Desi said, calling herself for him; she needed to be strong for him.
Steve refused to cry, he didn't like to appear weak in front of anyone but only with Desi did he feel this way; someone who never judged anyone and was warm to everyone around her. He felt a tear roll down his face and he allowed himself to be vulnerable in front of her.
Desi felt Steve's anguish, and his regret but also felt relief, it wasn't a lot, but it was a start.
Once Steve felt ready, he brought them to their feet before he released her, seeing a smile on her lips as she commonly did.
"Thank you." He said, with a smirk.
"Anytime, Captain." she said with a smile, saluting him.
"Have you always been able to do that?" Steve asked, and Desi narrowed her eyes to him playfully.
"Trying to learn my abilities, Rogers?" Desi asked.
"I think it's only fair." Steve said as he sat down on the sofa. He patted the space next to him and she sighed with an amused look on her face.
"Yes and no. I only learned about this recently when I first met Bucky, but I have been before with objects." Desi admitted as she sat beside him.
"Will you tell me about it? What it was like for you growing up?" Steve asked her.
She smiled sadly, and Steve wondered if he had overstepped.
"If it's hard, you don't have to." He told her but she shook her head.
"No one has really asked about it, but I know it's in the report. I…don't mind talking about it." Desi told him, smiling to assure him it was fine.
"When I was five years old, I had learned of my abilities when a deer came running towards our house injured. My family was ready to shoot it down, but I couldn't let them. I had healed the deer, and my family immediately kept their distance from me. The next two days they kept me locked in a room until a woman came for me. She whisked me away for training…I still remember seeing the fear in my mother's eyes…" Desi said spoke, looking at Steve with a sad smile,
"It was pretty brutal, we lived in the middle of nowhere with open fields in darkness, but I had a routine to follow. Every day we would wake up and take care of the livestock, and collect the herbs, fruits, and vegetables in the field. She would then teach me techniques, and best practices to use, and we would help those who came to us for help." She told him.
"That must be tough for a five-year-old. How was it for you when you went back home?" Steve asked, beyond curious at this point.
"It was hard. I didn't come back until I was eighteen years old, but…I was a stranger to my family. My…mother had a build a home for me, ready for me to settle when I came back," Desi said, scoffing bitterly as she remembered seeing the coldness in her mother's eyes,
"She's superstitious, worried I'd have spirits or demons following me. You know that I wasn't welcomed when I came home? Makes sense they'd kick me out the moment they could." Desi said bitterly, feeling alone again as she hugged herself.
"I'm sorry, I didn't know. That must've been hard to endure. Did you have a friend to confide in?" Steve asked with a frown, he didn't realize how long Desi struggled, how her own family had been wary of her, yet she still showed kindness to others.
"I'm… a lone wolf. The community either hated me, feared me, or respected me too much but no; it was just me, myself, and I." Desi said. She noticed the frown still on his face and quickly continued,
"It all changed for me when I joined SHIELD. I met Clint and Nat; they were the first friends I made but then Loki happened. Then I met Wade, I'm glad I found my way back to you all though. It's like I have friends…"
Steve smirked and placed a hand on Desi's shoulder.
"You have one in me too, Desi. I'm here whenever you need me." Steve told her, making her eyes roll.
"Thanks, Captain."
"You're welcome, Archangel."
Steve got a call on his cell and excused himself before he stepped into the kitchen. Desi sighed and stood up, cleaning up the table area when she heard his phone flip closed.
"I'm afraid I have to run, I'm needed somewhere." Steve spoke out loud and Desi smiled at him with a knowing look.
"Of course, you're Captain America." she teased as she put the plates into the sink.
Steve watched her, standing there and paused, looking down contemplating something before he looked back to her.
"Do you want to come with me?"
Desi looked over to him in surprise, "Are you sure?"
"Don't want to?" Steve challenged herself and she scrambled towards him.
"No, no, no, I'll go change! One, two, three, no backsies!" Desi shouted, hearing him chuckle behind her as she scrambled to change.
….?...
Steve enjoyed the mission with her. She remained calm, stayed close by, and followed his orders. Bucky and Clint had come back, and Desi was pulled into a mission with Nat and Clint; simple surveillance and hacking but it was an easy and fun job for her.
The following three days were a blur with missions, even working alongside Bucky and Clint was her favorite combo. She was curious to see what it'd be like with Steve and Bucky, but she never got the chance now that her week was over.
She stayed up all night making cakes, brownies, and pies as a 'thank you' to everyone before she picked up her bag. The team was completely tired from the mission before, but Desi wasn't one to get any sleep. She had just come out of the dorm room when she saw the team waiting for her, and she smiled sadly at the thought of leaving them,
"Look at who was trying to sneak out…" Clint teased, and she rolled her eyes.
"I'm not good at goodbyes, I'm sorry." Desi said, flashing them an apologetic smile as Clint pulled her into a tight embrace.
"Do you really have to go? You don't have to say goodbye here, kid." Clint asked her.
"I…I would, but I have jobs lined up. I'm just a call away though if you need me, though." Desi assured them, but she wouldn't lie that she was beginning to feel overwhelmed.
Saying her goodbyes to Bruce, a part of her wanted to stay. She enjoyed her time with them, but a part of her also missed Wade and Weasel.
"Be safe, Tiny." Nat whispered, "Call me if you're in trouble."
"I will, thank you for the all the fun! Let's have a girl night soon, yes?" Desi asked before Steve approached her.
He offered his hand, and she rolled her eyes, shaking his hand back.
"Stay safe and call us if you need us."
"Will do, Cap." Desi said, flashing him a smile.
"Alright, enough everyone, Angel isn't disappearing forever, are you?" Tony chimed in.
"Nope!" Desi exclaimed.
"Good, so come back in about a week or so? Your suit should be ready by then." Tony told her, guiding her away from the team.
Desi threw him a suspicious look, realizing that he was guiding her towards the elevator.
"Here is, this is for you," he said, handing her a rectangular box, "it's a phone with all our numbers on it. No more hiding, okay?"
Desi rolled her eyes but nodded. If there was one thing she knew about Tony Stark, it was that arguing with the man was a losing battle. She looked around one last time and didn't see Bucky anywhere, making her pout but she could only assume he was still asleep.
"Well, I'm off! Bye everyone!" Desi exclaimed cheerfully as the elevator doors slif closed on her her, waving at them one final time.
She took a deep breath as she finally made it to the main floor, looking up as the doors slid back open for her. She couldn't fight the surprised look on her face when she saw Bucky standing there.
"Bucky?"
He stepped aside, waiting for her to walk out before walking in-step with her.
"Are you going back to your apartment?" Bucky asked, which she shook her head.
"Heading to the Hell House for now, gotta pick up my dossiers before my next job." Desi answered.
He nodded when they approached her motorcycle, helping her as she climbed onto hit. Desi had reached for her helmet, but Bucky had already grabbed it for her, placing the helmet on her as he strapped it on for her.
"Call me when you get back."
"I will." Desi told him softly before she turned on her bike, driving off after flashing him one last smile.
