Chapter II
Note
Some events were shifted in time and happened earlier to fit the story.
This fanfiction came to my mind not too long ago. Since I have two others to update, this one is quite light and serves as a distraction. I needed something to keep me from exhausting myself with the last two. And since this one is short, the last next will come in two more days. I have exceptionally much free time to write...again. So.. there you have it.
And please review!
Turmoil
"A state of great commotion, confusion, or disturbance; tumult; agitation; disquiet:mental turmoil caused by difficult decisions."
"I crashed down from a high it felt so real
I never knew how much it would hurt to feel
You gotta hurt sometimes to learn to heal
You gotta get back up and learn to deal
And it's all my fault that I'm still the one you want
I'm a liar, I'm a cynic
I'm a sinner, I'm a saint
I'm a loser, I'm a critic
I'm the ghost of my mistakes
And it's all my fault that I'm still the one you want
So what are you after?
Some kind of disaster?"
Some Kind of Disaster - All Time Low
It's been over a week since she came home. Charlie was still furious. He couldn't understand what had suddenly possessed her to go to a completely different continent to look for Edward Cullen with his sister! In Italy!
Charlie always had a high opinion of Carlisle Cullen's children. They never misbehaved or caused any other trouble in the town or at school. He didn't expect Alice to appear after a few months, kidnapping his daughter to the other end of the world. All this was a big shock to him.
If it wasn't for Jacob, he wouldn't have known that his own daughter was prone to such things. And it's all for the boy who led her to a severe depression from which she could not get out for several months.
Charlie couldn't understand the stupidity of his only daughter. As soon as she returned, he grounded her at home. Bella didn't object.
For the first time in six months, his daughter seemed to fall back into the same vicious circle. Only this time she seemed devoid of emotion. She didn't cry at night, no screams came from her room. Empty silence.
Numb, she lay on the bed staring out the window. As if she was waiting for something. The experience was worse for Charlie than her zombie phase. At least she was showing emotion then. Now she was like an empty doll, tossed in the corner.
This time even Jacob couldn't reach her. Bella surrounded herself with a tight wall through which neither he nor her loved ones could break through. The chief of police cursed again the day Edward Cullen crossed the threshold of his house. So many bad things had happened since he came into their lives.
Charlie only regretted that he hadn't done anything sooner to end their acquaintance, fast enough to spare Bella further suffering that the youngest son of the Cullens imposed on her.
"Bella." He called from outside the closed door of her room. "Can I come in?" he asked uncertainty.
There was silence for several minutes. The sound of light footsteps reached his ears and the door opened revealing Bella all in tears, shaking.
Charlie would have smiled at the sight, seeing his little girl standing in front of him had just shed a tear from her days spent being nothing but a statue residing in his home. But he couldn't show it. Not when she needed him so badly. It wasn't a good time.
So he pulled her close to him, kissing her forehead. "Everything will be alright kiddo." He assured her, letting her cry into his flannel shirt for another hour.
…
Bella hadn't been able to talk to anyone since he'd abandoned her again. Jacob had been visiting her despite the crap she'd done to him by choosing Alice that day. And she couldn't utter a single word, "I'm sorry." So they lay cuddled together on her bed until she fell asleep again.
Unable to get an answer, Jacob stopped asking why she came back alone. Without her beloved "bloodsucker" as he always said. He didn't push, he didn't start the topic. He just held her as she lay paralyzed in his warm arms.
Any other person would have given up long ago and wanted nothing to do with her. But not Jacob. He was determined to make Bella his only.
Now without any threat from his rival, he hoped Bella would snap out of her trance and view him not as a brother but as someone she could love. The young werewolf gave her everything he had, including his heart. He was ready to endure any torture, any pain if there was even the slightest chance that Isabella Swan would give him hers.
What he felt for her was love in its purest, most polished form.
Billy didn't even ask where he was going anymore as he stepped through the door of the house on his way out. He knew his son would be at the Swan's home, trying to put his best friend's daughter back together. There was something about Jake that was good. He could make something new out of nothing, fix it, merge it into a unified whole.
Like his mother Sarah, Jacob had a heart of gold but unfortunately the temperament of his great-grandfather Ephraim. Billy was afraid that the young girl would break his son's heart again, but when he heard about Bella's strange return from Italy, he immediately ordered a pack meeting.
The entire La Push and Forks area, including the Cullen home, was searched several times. The smell around the villa was already stale and there was not a soul to be seen around.
If the Cullens weren't going to come back, why did they kidnap Bella across the globe? And then they returned her alone to her doorstep, trembling.
Charlie intended to take her to the hospital, but due to the supernatural aspect of the case, Billy Black insisted that Sue examine his daughter. Loudly arguing that Sue lives closer to Forks and will be at his place in a few minutes. Charlie agreed not wanting to argue when his daughter was in such a bad state of mind.
"I don't see any physical signs of violence on her body." Sue stated in a medical tone as she left the teenager's room.
"What about her..." Charlie stuttered. "Mind?" He pointed to his head.
"Hard to say..." Sue sighed heavily, looking at the police chief from under her dark lashes. Charlie wouldn't be happy if she told him the truth, so Sue decided that a lie that partially omitted her would be better than revealing even a scrap of secret linking them to the vampire clan. "I don't know what happened to her, Charlie, but it must have been terrible. I'm not a psychologist, but I think Bella was deeply traumatized."
Billy and Jacob exchanged worried looks.
"Damned Cullen!" Charlie slammed his fist on the table. "First he broke her by leaving her alone in the fucking woods and now he's sending her home in even worse shape than before."
"Calm down, old man." Billy was reassuring his friend. "Screaming won't help her. Sue, is there anything we can do for her?" He turned to the woman sitting next to him.
"I think only a good therapist will help here. I can recommend someone if you want. She will also need your support to recover faster." Sue replied, scribbling something on the paper. "Here." She handed it to Charlie.
"This is the number for my psychotherapist at La Push. He helped me a lot to get over Harry's death. All you have to do is mention my name and Bella will be able to start next week quickly."
"Thanks Sue." Charlie mumbled, staring at the piece of paper in his hand.
"You're welcome. I have a daughter myself and I know what it's like to see your child suffer. Leah took the breakup from Sam very hard. She hasn't gotten over it to this day." She sighed sadly.
Charlie looked sympathetically at Sue. "I have an idea." He said with a slight smile.
The woman frowned. "Meaning?"
"Maybe Leah and Bella should spend more time together? They have similar experiences."
"That's not a good idea Charlie." Jacob interjected. "They don't like each other very much."
"It's true. Leah can be very harsh with others." Sue said. "Since the death of her father, she doesn't talk much. She even avoids me. When I try to make any closer contact with her, she pushes me away. She trusts only Seth, no one else."
"Perhaps she does this because she can't talk to someone who was also heartbroken like herself. " stated Charlie. "Please Sue. I can't watch my only child drowning in her own sorrow and closing herself off to the world more and more every day.I won't allow it a second time." he begged.
Billy rode up to him in his wheelchair, putting his hand on his best friend's shoulder in a gesture of comfort. The sight of a helpless Charlie was breaking his heart. He was no longer the police chief. His place had been taken by Charlie Swan, a desperate father who would go to hell itself and back for his daughter if it meant at least one smile on her face. Billy understood this better than most. Rebecca left home right after graduating from high school, got married in Hawaii and never returned home after that. Rachel, her twin, also had no interest in her ailing father. True, she lived closer than Becca, Seattle was only 2 hours away from La Push but they kept in touch only by phone. He was left with only Jacob.
"Okay. I'll talk to Leah. But I'm not promising anything Charlie." Sue agreed, not hiding her concern about the upcoming meeting between the two girls. She wasn't sure how it would affect Bella's mental condition. Sue loved her daughter but Leah could be totally unpredictable if something upset her deeply. The wolf nature only exacerbated this greatly.
"Great." rejoiced Charlie. "Then it's settled."
…
"Drink up, baby, stay up all night
With the things you could do, you won't but you might
The potential you'll be, that you'll never see
The promises you'll only make
Drink up with me now and forget all about
The pressure of days, do what I say
And I'll make you okay and drive them away
The images stuck in your head"

*Flashback*
"Your death Bella." He said dispassionately.
"What do you mean by my death?" Bella asked him.
"When Renata lowered her shield, Aro showed me everything he saw in that girl's mind. Edythe is a hybrid Bella… A hybrid with an extremely powerful gift of clairvoyance. Remember how Alice told you that she couldn't see your future when there were wolves around?" he asked her, gazing sadly into her broken eyes.
He was about to reveal something that would break her even more. Edward hated himself even more because of it.
"Yes. The werewolves are blocking her visions." She admitted. "That's why she thought I was dead when I jumped off the cliff. Jacob saved me before I could drown. That created black holes in Alice's vision."
"Aro's new acquisition can do much more. Neither wolves nor other such creatures can block what she can see. Alice can only see humans and other vampires, her visions are based on the decisions of others therefore they can't be considered completely certain. We thought it was enough to keep you alive and protect you from Aro. I didn't think Caius could have such a powerful ace up his sleeve." He sighed, combing his disheveled hair with his fingers."Edythe's vision is always the surest, final outcome. That's why Aro was so fascinated by her. Alice was no longer important to him."
"What do you mean by that?"
"That Aro saw you as a vampire, just as Alice predicted. But that's not all... He saw you as a threat."
"A threat?"
"Your transformation meant his death. You are a natural shield, Bella. That's why I've never been able to read your thoughts. Even Charlie's thoughts are just snippets of his emotions to me. After the change, the gifts we have during human life become more powerful. Yours is exceptionally powerful even in the present moment. By sending you home, Aro avoided certain death."
"Unfortunately, by separating us... I was the one who transformed you,not Alice, Bella." He admitted. "Because of my lack of caution you died. You insisted on driving that van of yours, and there was an accident. I can't... I couldn't do that to you. Your human life is much more important to me. Because of our relationship, many could have died." He said, running his hands over his perfect face. "The pack, Charlie, even my family... We have to end this, Bella." He said with a guilty voice.
"You can't... You can't... Leave me again Edward!" she exclaimed through tears flying thickly down her face. "You are everything to me, my whole life. I love you!"
"Bella, don't make this more difficult than it is." He tried to calm her.
"You just don't want me anymore... This is another excuse to finally get away from me. After all, I'm just a weak human. I'll never be a match for Tania or Rosalie." The brunette choked out. "I will never be good enough for you."
"Bella, it's not like that..." He said, reaching out to take her hand in his.
"Like what?" she asked, pushing his cold hands away. "If you cared about us, you would fight for us and not run away like a coward."
"The world doesn't just revolve around you Bella." He hissed at her. "Have you ever thought of anyone other than yourself? Have you thought for a moment what will happen to others if we defy Aro? This is not just about you. Will you be able to live forever knowing that your father is dead? Are you capable of becoming a cold monster without a soul? 'Cause all you'll want after the change is blood. What you're asking for is pure selfishness, Bella."
She was numb. This was not the reaction she expected from him. Edward had never addressed her that way. He was always sensitive and understanding. The one sitting in front of her wasn't him. It wasn't her Edward. He wouldn't refuse her.
Alice came in bringing her some food and a bottle of water. There was no reason not to believe she had heard everything.
But Edward's sudden outburst took away her desire to take even a bite. For the rest of the way home, she never spoke to either of them again. Too much venom spilled between her and the vampire.
This time it really was going to be as if he never existed.
*End of flashback*
Bella couldn't sleep. She even tried taking sleeping pills so she could finally close her eyes. But that was only half the solution. Nightmares about Edward living her continued to haunt her every night. And even the medicine did not help. Each time she woke up all sweaty and in tears. She didn't scream this time, her lungs were gasping for air. Jacob assured her that the red-haired vampire had been captured and annihilated by the pack while she was away so that they could never harm her again.
The brunette was grateful for their protection, really. Right after she got home from Italy, Jacob was acting weird towards her. He was still just as affectionate towards her, but he didn't push so hard for "something more than friendship." Maybe it's because of her current state? She thought as she got out of bed. She looked at her watch, it was only six in the morning.
She walked lazily to the kitchen. Empty. Charlie was probably still asleep. So she ate a bowl of cereal quickly, washing it down with orange juice. Then, pulling on a pair of faded jeans and her favorite t-shirt from her closet, she fired up her old laptop. A ton of unread emails flashed across the screen.
Bella started scouring through the messages, reading and replying to an angry Renee who wasn't happy about her trip to Europe with Alice Cullen. The brunette tried to reassure her mother that everything was fine and Charlie made sure that she would not leave the house on her own for the near future and, apart from school, she was grounded. So she didn't have to worry that Charlie wasn't taking her inappropriate behavior seriously.
The last message in her mailbox was from an unknown sender. Bella clicked on it, waiting patiently for it to load.
Dear Bella,
I know I shouldn't contact you. Edward is somewhere in Canada and has no idea I sent you this email. Due to the current situation, this form is the safest for both of us.
Bella, he didn't tell you everything. Your sudden death was caused by something other than a car accident. You were the mother. This is what Edythe saw in Volterra. The healthy, red-haired girl you had with Edward. He said she was beautiful. She had your eyes. Your death was supposed to be the result of a supernatural pregnancy. And the change is only its effect. The Volturi was meant to die from your hand. Unfortunately, your daughter would also die in battle. Edward agreed to Aro's terms mainly because of you. He decided that the pain of being separated again would be lesser than the loss of a family. Please don't hold it against him. He loves you beyond what he is. I miss you so much.
I wanted to apologize to you for everything, both on behalf of myself and my family. For every hurt, pain and disappointment we've brought upon you. I am so grateful for the time we spent together. You will always be my sister and nothing will change that. I love you and wish you all the best.
May you find your own happiness.
Lots of love,
Alice
Bella felt tears well up in her eyes. She swung her computer shut, throwing herself on the bed crying. There was no end to this suffering for her. When it seemed to be better, everything seemed to turn gray again.
As she marched into the bathroom, Bella glanced into her reflection. Her eyes were red, swollen from crying, her hair still disheveled from an hour of crying into her pillow.
Disgusted with her appearance, she began to put herself in order. She took a good shower scrubbing her body with such determination as if she wanted to wash away all the pain she felt inside.
Edward lied to her again. He didn't trust her so much, he had to come up with more lies? Nervous, she dressed quickly and ran out of the house to her truck,on the way, leaving a note for Charlie where he could find her.
Even if he grounded her again, she didn't care. She had to go to La Push. To the one person who would help her understand and get over it. This person was her last hope. She thought, driving into the reservation.
