Subaru yawned as he walked down the stairs to the living room to find Satella wearing another outfit.
She wore a black skirt that fell to her knees. The skirt was paired with form-fitting black leggings that hugged her legs while seamlessly blending with the skirt. The long-sleeved top had a modest scoop neckline and was crafted from a fabric draped over her frame. The golden accents on the edges of the top. The intricate gold embroidery traced the hemlines, cuffs, and neckline.
"Why do you wear a different outfit every day?" Subaru asked as his eyes dilated.
Satella tilted her head, "Why do you wear the same thing daily? It's refreshing to wear whatever I want without Reid being a creep."
"Now that I think about it, everyone wears the same thing every day…." Subaru admitted.
Subaru walked towards the living area and sat beside Satella as he got even more confused, "Is that a Robix Cube?"
"Subaru, you need a new outfit hereeee you go." Satella created an entire piece of clothing and replaced Subaru's current one with it.
Satella formed a mirror, and Subaru looked at what he was wearing. He donned a pair of black pants that fit his form, adorned with golden accents. The pants fit perfectly, enhancing his silhouette and providing a comfortable yet refined fit. His black long-sleeve shirt. The collar was embellished with an array of shimmering golden dots.
"Stella, this looks… nice, thank you."
Satella yawned, "Sooo, what do you want to do today? Let's explore the world. Didn't the timeline reset or something."
"Yup. But I could get used to this new life. It seems everyone is happy."
"You seem in a good mood Subaru or hmm, is it because of my outfit?" Satella teased.
Subaru darted his eyes, "Well, that might be one. But also, we can go and do whatever we want now, and I think someone is dealing with Flugel's memories for me."
"Hm? What does that mean?"
"I can't believe I'm saying this, but Regulus, someone I fought in the past, is… very angry at Flugel, so he told me to kill him, and I think he's been the one enhancing my authority too."
"How are we going to kill someone that already died?"
Subaru laughed, "Well, we can reincarnate and kill him again. But with Regulus controlling my authorities, I should be able to protect you."
Satella smirked, "Hey, I can protect you too. I think I'm stronger than whoever this Regulus person is."
"Satella, I don't even know if you have authority. You seem to have like the creation of all things or something."
"Creation of all things… that sounds like a good name to give my ability. Subaru, what are you going to name yours?"
"Hmm, Mindless Power."
Satella playfully punched Subaru, "How about the power of Hitler?"
Subaru blinked, "What?"
"Flug- I mean, said that Hitler was a hero on Earth."
"No, he wasn't… he killed millions of people. I'll just name it once I learn more about how it works."
Satella sighed, "Subaru, you're going to have to teach me more about Earth. I want to go there. It seems fun."
"One thing at a time, Stella, jeez. First, let's explore the Capital or something… before you can meet Emilia, we'd need to talk to Reinhard."
"Hmmm, alright. Reinhard… is he going to try to grope me like Reid? Their names sound similar."
"No, no, he's not going to do that… Satella, remember this is a new start for both of us, so don't worry about the past too much."
"Rightttt, but I wonder how people will react when they see me. Also new start for both of us? Well, I guess that's true. Subaru, do you know how to solve this thing?" Satella pointed towards the Rubix cube.
"Satella, let's go. This is our first time in the open together, so we must be careful."
"Don't make it sound like we're some scandalous secret couple."
"What's scandalous is you wearing half to nothing most of the time! I'm just trying to make sure we survive."
"Uhuh, okay, say what you want, but you're a bad liar."
"We should go to the Capital as a test run and see how people respond."
"Sooo, like if they'll think we're together or just friends?"
"Satella, stop teasing me fucking hell."
"I'm notttt remember I haven't been around a man who isn't either a liar or doesn't ask for consent type of man sooo to me your very what's the word hot? I forgot some Earth terminologies, but you get the point, right?"
"If that's your criteria, you'll find many better men than me."
"Hey, no self-deprecation. I even made you an outfit. Even if I did find a 'better man' than you, I'd reject them."
"Huh?"
"Subaru, remember I'm not the type just to pick anyone… well, I haven't picked anyone before in my life, sooo this is a new thing for me." Satella realized, "Wait, no, this is wrong. Now you'll think I'm choosing you for no reason… fine, I'll pick someone else. I don't want you to remember that thing because of me."
"Stella, relax. You don't have to pick anyone yet… at this point, I'm living with you, Regulus is protecting me, and the whole world forgets me. Everything is upside down."
"I'm trying to forget my past, ya know? Now I get to wear whatever I want without constant fighting or conflict. It's all because of you. Don't get the wrong idea I'm not in love with you I'm just excited."
"I can see that very very clearly. I need a way to fly without you carrying me. This is annoying."
"Hmmm, you said someone is boosting your power. Maybe just try to fly. That's what I did, and it worked… or I could just give you mana, and you see if you can figure it out."
"Give me mana?"
"I'd have to increase your gate size and give you access to all magic affinities. Wait, no, not yet."
"WHY?"
"The process is very uh personal. You don't do it with anyone."
"Stella, you know everything about me. What's the problem if you know my memories?"
"No, never mind, forget about it."
"Fine, carry me to the Capital. Let's see how this goes."
Satella agreed, and the two began their ascend into the air to the Capital of the Kingdom. Subaru was wary of how this would go, but he knew he couldn't hide forever. Within the sky, he pointed toward the direction of the Capital, and the two arrived within a few seconds landing near a specific apple shop.
"Subaru, you lead the way!" Satella spoke with a loud voice which caused many to look in her direction.
"Appa. Of course, appa's. Let's get some appa's." Subaru mumbled.
Satella formed a bag of holy coins, "Here, use this."
The two approached the appa shop, where the man stared at Satella in both fear and confusion, "A-re you-"
"No. She is not." Subaru said, putting five holy coins on the table, "We'd like some appa's."
After seeing the money, the salesman lost any fear and quickly bagged up appa's for the two customers, "Thank you come again anytime."
"Seems money is the cure to racism." Subaru laughed as he walked down the streets of the Capital with Satella.
Satella whispered, "This is going sooo much better than I thought. We can just walk around freely."
"Don't jinx it…."
The two continued to walk until they found out there was not much to do at the Capital. Subaru sighed as they started walking back toward the center. Subaru was waiting for something to happen, yet nothing did. People would give them strange looks, but even a few knights they passed didn't do anything.
"Stella, well, this was a good test run next time, we can talk to Reinhard, and maybe you can meet your sister," Subaru said as the two prepared to leave.
"Wait, red-haired knight? I see him over there look." Satella pointed toward the direction.
Reinhard stared at the two before turning around in the opposite direction and walking away.
"Why did he leave?" Satella asked.
"I'm not sure," Subaru replied.
"That sword he has… I made it. He seems to like it. That's good." Satella said as she began to ascend back into the sky.
Subaru was trying to figure out how to solve the Rubix Cube that Satella made, "This is so annoying. How do you even solve this thing?"
Satella sighed, "I was so excited to go to the Capital, but it was sorta boring. Subaru, what else is there to do that is fun?"
"Fun, well, I don't know. Normally hanging out with everyone was the fun part."
"Maybe if we can fix everything, we can join Emilia's camp."
"Stella… that would be so uncomfortable."
"Ittt would be fun, though. But you still have to figure something out, don't you."
"As long as Emilia doesn't form any attachment for me, I think it won't cause the curse of the sage… but you said you never had romantic feelings for anyone?"
"I'm not lying. Back then, Flugel was a friend, Reid was a predator, the dragon was nice, Hoshin was sad, and Echidna was always doing strange things. Subaru, you have some super-powerful person controlling your powers too. We'll be fine."
"Echidna?"
"Yeahhh, she knew Flugel even before me. They seemed to be close."
"Stella, I said I'd start a new me, but being around Emilia will be hard."
"It'll be hard for me too. I'm not trying to be selfish… but what else will we do?"
"How about you join the camp if you want, and I'll stay here?"
"I'm sorry. I want to cheer you up, but I'm just making it worse."
"Stella, you want to join the Emilia camp to meet your sister. Then once I'm happy with her again, you'll leave… be honest."
"I just can't stand seeing you so gloomy. I should've died a long time ago, so why does it even matter? I just want you and my sister to be happy."
"She already is. Stella, I'm not sad. I'm trying to make you happy, so would you want to join their camp? At first, I hated you. Then I felt bad for you, and now… it's not even about that. I love being around you. Satella, the past me loved Emilia, and the current me loves you. I'm a terrible person, but after learning everything, I have, after seeing you get blamed for something you didn't do and suffer for four hundred years." Subaru sighed, "Stella, why even tease me or say the things you did if you didn't want a future?"
"I don't know! Okay, fine, maybe I did… I don't know. It doesn't make sense to me, either. But Subaru, would you want to join Emilia's camp and stay if I wanted to?"
"The entire world forgot my existence, including her. Now I'm even more confused about how the curse of the Sage works because if Echidna was close with Flugel, then I don't even want to know what happened. But I guess I'm no longer a Sage or a Sage candidate in this timeline. We've spent a few weeks together and your right, it would be more fun to be at Emilia's camp. But Satella, you're assuming many things will work out, and if something happened to you, then I'd be broken."
"Why… why couldn't I have met you all those years ago?"
"Hey, stop self-deprecating and separate your past self from your current. That's what I did after a very long, and by long, I mean six hours of ranting about how my rights are being violated. I was able to move on. You can do the same, or do I need to rant to you?"
"Separate my past self from my current? That is a good way of thinking about it. Did you get this idea from this person that ranted for six hours?"
"No, but I got the idea because of his ranting."
*KNOCK*
Subaru walked to the door with unease when he opened it. He saw none other than the red-haired knight Reinhard Van Astrea. Subaru began to walk back as Reinhard unsheathed his sword with emotionless eyes.
"Reinhard, don't."
At that moment, Od Laguna whispered to Reinhard.
Book of the Dead. Title. Subaru Natsuki.
Reinhard's eyes changed to that of confusion, "Subaru?"
Subaru's body tensed, "Do you remember?"
Reinhard took a moment to process everything he just saw. The entire timeline of events that happened before. Subaru Natsuki, Emilia's knight. He then saw him repeatedly die as he began questioning what he had witnessed. All the memories of Subaru and the other timeline entered Reinhard's mind as he processed it almost instantly. But accepting it was another thing entirely.
Reinhard sheathed his sword, "Subaru, I almost… what happened?"
Subaru asked, "Do you remember the old timeline?"
Reinhard had a chill go down his spine, "Yes… I do now."
"I assume you won't kill us then?"
"Subaru, is it true that Satella is here with you?"
"Yes. Everything is a lie. Do not kill her, or at least let me explain…."
In Subaru's plea, Reinhard saw only despair, "Subaru, I'm sorry. If Satella is truly here, I must kill her."
"I made the sword you wield…" a voice called out.
Subaru turned around, seeing Satella move closer, "Don't kill her, Reinhard. If you remember the previous timeline, how?"
Reinhard froze as he knew everything about Subaru, "I will be honest with you. Od Laguna sent me the memories of the book of the dead titled your name. But Satella? Subaru, do you expect me not to kill the Witch of Envy who escaped her seal?"
Subaru stood directly before Reinhard, "You're lucky you didn't read the book of dead titled Flugel. Od Laguna, if I am an imbalance to this world, then so be it, but if not, show Reinhard the book of the dead titled Flugel."
Od Laguna responded to Subaru's wish.
Book of the Dead. Title. Flugel.
Reinhard began to process Flugel's life much more manageably than Subaru had. He could process an entirely different timeline, so a single life's memories weren't much of a comparison. What he saw shocked and tormented his mind as he realized the heroes were nothing more than lies. However, Reinhard did learn much more than Subaru and the cause of the Great Calamity. Reinhard looked towards his sword with a sense of disgust. The original Sword Saint was everything Reinhard despised. The title he had been the Sword Saint he always disliked, but now it felt more of an insult as he saw what a true monster could've been like. He saw Flugel's life as believing he was a curse and then manipulated a person named Echidna. But the worst thing he witnessed was Emilia's origin. He vowed never to speak of this as if the truth was learned about the heroes. It would cause unease within the world. Satella was freed, but somehow Subaru removed her authority, and now she was normal. He wasn't sure how to handle this as he felt terrible that he was so close to ending his close friend's life and a person who didn't deserve the title they received.
Reinhard muttered, "Od Laguna responded to you… and now I both know your memories and Flugel's. My apologies."
Subaru smiled, "Reinhard is back! Satella, you can come out. I need to know how this world changed since all we learned was Emilia was Heinkel's knight."
"Was Satella the one that… cured my mother?"
"Subaru, you were right. He's wayyy nicer than Reid," Satella said, standing next to Subaru.
Subaru sighed, "Let's all sit down and get this conversation over with. I didn't even think someone could remember me, but books of the dead make sense. I guess Reinhard now knows everything. But Stella, that's probably a good thing since you did want to join Emilia's camp."
The three sat down as Reinhard slowly regained his composure, not understanding what he was witnessing in the present. He did know exactly what happened and what caused the Great Calamity but had no idea how Satella was freed or why Subaru was with her. His only idea is that somehow they connected as he saw the memories that Subaru was unaware of within the Shadow Garden.
Reinhard asked, "Subaru, I understand what happened, but I still don't understand how you and Satella ended up meeting each other."
"That's something I'm not aware of either. I assume you killed Regulus and Petelgeuse?"
"Petelguese attacked the Astrea mansion trying to complete some sort of plan but was killed by myself and Heinkel. Regulus, I could only defeat because Od Laguna told me his weakness."
Satella smiled, "I'm happy that the Dragon Sword, who Reid decided to name after himself, was found by a good person."
Reinhard blinked at the praise he was receiving, "Than-k you."
"Reinhard, what happened with the whale? How did you find Emilia?" Subaru's tone turned to anger, "was Roswaal the one that told you this location?"
"The Sage Council informed me. I am unsure if it was information given by Roswaal. I found Emilia, the fifth candidate that needed to be found, in which Od Lagunca directed me to her location. The Great Spirit of Fire attempted to stop me, and I was forced to kill the spirit." Reinhar's tone became calmer, "Felt and Emilia became good friends, and the Astra family was allowed to have sponsors at the direct order of the Dragon. Your name being eaten caused everything to change… but Subaru, are you still the same person I knew?"
"You saw my power, right? Returning by death. I thought you always knew, but I no longer have that power. After the timeline changed, I've spent the last two or three weeks in this house that Stella made." Subaru wondered, "Who did Roswaal sponsor, and did the White Whale die?"
"Roswaal sponsored Crusch, and Crusch's camp killed the White Whale."
"Reinhard, thank you for taking care of my sister."
Reinhard's posture stiffened, "It is my duty I do not deserve such praise."
"Reinhard, from this day forward, Satella will be Stella. I don't see why Stella can't resemble Satella if Emilia can have her resembles." Subaru continued, "Stella wants to tell Emilia she's her sister, and we both want to join your camp."
"Subaru, are you sure that's a good idea? You may be hurt about something I neglected to mention."
"What is it?"
"Well, seeing the two different timelines and how Emilia is… happier in this timeline. I want to be honest with you, considering I saw your entire life, which I'm sure is something you wouldn't want someone doing."
"That's good. I'm glad she is happier. Also, if there were anyone I would trust with my memories, it would be you. My existence will remain forgotten, but Satella will just be Stella. She wants to see her sister… it's a selfish thing to ask of you."
"Subaru, why do you want to remain forgotten?"
"The irony is so absurd it's hard even to comprehend. If the previous timeline continued, Emilia would've become the Witch of Envy. That is directly related to me. Gluttony ate my name, and the world corrected itself, avoiding that future."
Reinhard genuinely smiled, "Satel- Stella did cure my mother. My father… has a newfound hope now."
"I'm happy I could help you and your family Reinhard. You seem like a good person, far better than Reid. I'm glad that the sword I created found a worthy user. But… maybe rename it."
"Perhaps I will. I must ask them and my father about you and Subaru joining Felt and Emilia's camp. My father will most defiantly allow it, and I'll not mention anything regarding your origin Stella. I doubt Emilia will doubt the possibility of another half-elf being alive. I must be going now. I have some questions for Roswaal I must inquire."
"It was… good to see you again, Reinhard." Subaru smiled.
"Yes, it seems Od Laguna itself believes in you as well. I will return when I have an answer."
Reinhard left the living room and began his way toward Roswaal's mansion as Od Laguna continued to inform him of his plans and motivations.
