Delphi knew she should not have met Albus Severus. She should have looked the other way. She ought to have perhaps cursed him rather than try to seduce him and forget to take her potion in time and get pregnant.
It was not her fault! And she was sure her father would have agreed, were he alive. She was twenty-four and her lover had just turned eighteen. Said lover was the sweetest, kindest, most devoted person she had ever met. It was extremely hard to hate him for his lineage, to the point of being impossible, and Delphi had always wanted a family.
So she pretended her child did not have Harry Potter for a grandfather, tried not to panic, and thought about how to tell Albus the good news.
The boy knew where he would find her, for she gave him her address. He knew of her origins because she had foolishly told him when the wounds of her past resurfaced. But he didn't judge her.
He was, however, vehement about not letting her become a dark lady, or murder his father. Pity. As much as she wanted vengeance for her father she did not want to lose Albus's love, especially now.
So she waited. Down began to rise, announcing Albus's arrival. He knocked on the door three times. She swung the door open and they embraced.
"Delphi, I brought you something," Albus said and showed her a box of chocolates.
"Are they with strawberries?" Delphi asked, playfully.
"Of course, only the best for my Lady."
They used to joke around, even in the bedroom where Albus would be a brave light wizard commanding a sensuous dark lady, controlling her. Delphi didn't know when exactly their bedroom games became reality.
They kissed each other, sweetly, passionately. When they came out for air, Delphi inhaled and said, "Albus, I'm pregnant."
She considered the direct approach was the least shocking one but, apparently not. Albus's eyes widened, and for a moment he forgot how to breathe. For a moment Delphi contemplated cpr, but Albus soon began to breathe again, and the look of fear soon transformed into marvel.
"That's brilliant," Albus said and hugged her.
They laughed, for they were young and carefree and about to become parents. Albus didn't mind his young age, or the fact that they both had absurdly-busy jobs. He was an auror and his advancement was forever crippled by the fact that his father gave him the easiest jobs, and sometimes told him to reconsider his choices and become a potioneer instead. He was stellar near a cauldron and could invent almost anything with the right ingredients.
Delphi worked in spell creation and had come up with different defensive and offensive spells which kept circulating around Albus's workplace. He always smiled when he heard Delphini Black was the one who invented it.
She had kept her mother's name and pretended she was a distant relative of the Blacks, a genius half-blood at that. Harry Potter had tried to reach her several times before, in the hopes of telling her about Sirius, making her part of his family. She supposed she had rushed and done that before he could do it.
If she took it as yet another way she was superior to him then none would know, except her. Because she didn't insult Albus's father in front of him, she cared about him. But when Albus was gone, it was fair game.
She had always told her assistant to tell Mr. Potter that she was incredibly busy and so couldn't see him then she apparated straight home. No one divulged her address and everyone thought she was bitter about Sirius's death or that she blamed Harry for it. She had made sure to let such fallacy slip from her mouth from time to time, to have a reason for running from him.
But she justified said running. She only did it so she would not murder him on sight. Then Albus might break up with her.
"I have talked to my boss, I'm on maternal leave," Delphi told him as she sat down on a red sofa.
"Good," Albus said and snuggled near her.
"I'm not going to work today," he added.
"Why not? Are you jealous?" Delphi asked and cackled.
"I want to spend time with you, my little dark flower. Besides, father won't mind."
She never thought she'd be grateful to Harry Potter for something.
"Albus?"
"Hmmm?"
"Want to go outside?" Delphi asked.
"A date it is!" he said happily.
They went to Florian Fortesque's and got ice cream, then they went to muggle London to find some detective novels which Delphi secretly liked. As much as she loved her dead father, to the point she had almost contemplated resurrecting him, she did not agree with all his philosophy.
Take Albus for example. He was a half-blood, but she could hardly find a blemish. Plus muggles knew how to write a book and not make it boring.
After an hour of searching, an exasperated Albus asked, "Honey, did you find a book?"
Delphi smiled and nodded.
She believed in buying only one and only what she perceived to be the best. Said belief often put her tastes to the test when she liked more books at once.
Then they went to a restaurant and ordered something fancy. It was sweet, it was normal.
As much as Delphi loved Albus she had not told him about her childhood abuse at the hands of Euphemia Rowle, who would starve her, lock her in a small room, and insult her.
She went to Hogwarts only because she wrote a letter and sent it when her guardian was sleeping. After turning seventeen she hightailed it out of there. With the money she had accumulated since she was eleven tutoring other students, she managed to rent a crappy apartment in Knockturn Alley. Yet, since she started her job in spell creation three years ago, she had better financial means and managed to buy one on the more decent side of town. Plus, there were no cockroaches there!
"Honey, how about Danny?" Albus said.
"No, it's a horrible name. How about Hephaistos?" Delphi suggested.
"Let's stick to naming our child something that both of us can pronounce, darling. How about Bruno?"
"It's nice. How about Scorpius? My baby cousin is named like that and he hasn't crossed me yet, so…"
"That's wonderful! Scorpius is my best friend!"
"I know," Delphi said and smiled fondly.
"What if it's a girl?" Albus asked.
"Josephine or Hatshepsut!" Delphi said enthused.
"How about Hattie instead?" Albus asked.
"No. Too simple. She deserves the best name on the planet!"
"If the baby is a she," Albus told her gently.
"Yes. Do you want to find out the gender?"
"I would love the baby regardless of gender. Do you want it to be a surprise?"
"Yes. Then I would be the one to name the baby first because the mediwizard would put the baby in my arms and I would be faster than you, love."
"Only if I've gone to the restroom, my Lady, but I will be there to stop a catastrophe."
"Oh, let me name the baby!" she huffed.
"You always use long names. Love, my name is Albus Severus, it's a mouthful and I was bullied for it. How do you think our baby would feel if we named her Hatshepsut?"
"She'd be glad to know I named her after a pharaoh."
Albus sighed and said, "Alright. You get to name her if she's a girl but, please, stick to something I can pronounce too."
"Of course, love."
They smiled and kissed.
Then they began to walk hand in hand towards Delphi's home when it happened. Some unknown attacker cast a spell at them and took them by surprise. Just as Albus was about to jump in front of Delphi to protect her, a white light encapsulated them and sent them into the past.
