Cassian wasn't too far behind her. It wasn't something he would go shouting from the rooftops, as he himself was a quiet and reserved man, but there was one person he was itching to tell.
Sergeant Ruscott Melshi, the man that helped him find Jyn the day before.
Melshi was preoccupied with some maintenance work, when he felt someone tap on his shoulder.
"Hello?" he asked, turning around. He found Cassian standing behind him, "Oh. Cass. Everything okay? You seem… different."
Cassian rubbed the back of his neck "Everything is fine. But what makes you say that?"
"Well, you have this sort of look in your eyes. And you're shifting. Is there something you want to tell me?"
"Yes, there actually is. Would you walk with me for a few minutes?"
"Yeah, I can put this on pause, it's not going anywhere."
"Perfect."
Melshi and Cassian walked out to the landing pad, where it was wide open, plus it was a nice day out.
"So, out with it." Melshi teased, and leaned against a wall, "I'm ready for it."
"Okay. You're the only other person that knows anything about this, and we'd like to keep it that way for now."
"Fine with me. Oh, but whose we? "
"Jyn and I." Cassian stated.
"Gotcha." Melshi agreed.
Cassian could feel his face warming up, and what just might have been a twinge of excitement. "Jyn and I are going to be parents," he revealed "We found out this morning that she's pregnant."
"That's amazing! Congratulations!" Melshi exclaimed, and patted Cassian on the back. "How does she feel about all this?"
"Well, I'm not exactly sure how she feels, health wise she's fine, but we haven't been able to talk about it, because we've both been so busy."
"Well then, we have to fix that, don't we?" Melshi proclaimed.
Cassian was oblivious for a moment, "What?"
"You need to talk to Jyn. And the sooner the better. And I've got an idea."
"Well, I'm open to suggestions."
"Good." Melshi then went on to explain his supposed plan. "Tonight, at dinner time, everyone will be in the mess hall. Then, while everyone is focused on food, you snag Jyn up and sneak off somewhere quiet."
"Why would we need to sneak?"
"So you don't intrigue anybody."
"Oh." He made a good point, and his plan seemed reasonable. "Fine. I'll do it. For Jyn."
"That's the spirit! But look at the time, I gotta get back to work. Or else some pilot is not gonna be pleased. " Melshi chuckled.
Just as Melshi was about to turn away, Cassian grabbed his shoulder, "Thank you Melshi. For everything."
"It's nothing, really. Just consider it a favor for a friend."
Then he dashed off to get back to his job. Cassian did the same, but now he would have to fight his anticipation till dinner time.
Finally, dinner time came around. Everyone had finished their hard work for the day, and now it was time to worry only about what they were gonna eat. And who got to the mess hall first.
Jyn followed the crowd, but she was taking her own time, absorbed in her thoughts.
Then, behind her came Bodhi Rook, one of her fellow rebels, and a good friend.
"Hello." He smiled, but his sudden appearance made Jyn jump.
"Ah!" she yelped, and swiftly spun around.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." Bodhi apologized.
"No, it's not your fault. I was off on another planet so to speak."
"I see. But, can I ask, are you okay? That's not like you to be scared that easily."
"I don't normally. I've just been feeling different lately, that's all." Jyn responded, trying to sound casual, "It's nothing serious."
"If you say so, I believe you." he smiled, "Would you like to sit with Baze, Chirrut and I tonight? I'm sure we can make an extra spot."
"I'd –" She was cut off by Cassian calling her name, as he trotted over to greet her.
"Hey Jyn. Can I steal you for a moment? I want to talk with you."
"Uh." she looked back at Bodhi, who was still waiting for her answer, "Yes, you can."
She then turned around, "Bodhi, I'll see what I can do. But I might have to take a rain check."
"I understand." Bodhi nodded, and proceeded into the mess hall.
"Cassian, that was rude." she scolded him, and gave him a serious look, "I was talking with Bodhi."
Cassian knew it, and began rubbing the back of his neck, "I apologize, but…."
"But what?"
"I want to talk about this morning. We haven't really spoken all day."
She breathed in, and exhaled. She hadn't forgotten about the matter, but it just got pushed to the back of her mind.
"Cassian, could we put this conversation aside? Just until after dinner?" she requested, placing her hand on his face and rubbing his cheek with her thumb.
"Is this some sort of bribe?" he smirked, finding her antics amusing.
"Maybe."
"Okay. But no later, understand?" His expression was stern, but somehow gentle too.
"I understand." "Now let's go eat!" She exclaimed, wrapping her arm around his.
"Alright, alright."
He pulled her close to his side, and together they strolled into the mess hall.
Everyone enjoyed their fine evening, their meal, and the time to catch up with friends, partners, and family.
But the rogue's table, as other rebels called it, were sharing their fondest memories, and laughing over silly things that everyone wanted to forget.
"And I remember that time when Kay-Too grabbed me by the shirt, and threw me to the ground. I still hold that against him." Jyn reminisced back to when she first met Cassian's droid partner, but made light of it.
And the exchanging of stories went back and forth, until the evening came to a close.
After what seemed like the whole rebellion had been fed, most were heading to hit their pillows, and call it a night. Others wanted to stay out a little later and enjoy the clear night. But this was not the case for Jyn and Cassian.
The pair were just heading to Cassian's quarters, which had become Jyn's as well, after the two got hitched. Finally they would talk things over regarding that morning.
Both of them had gotten ready for bed. Afterwards, Jyn sat down on their bed. Shortly, Cassian joined her, though he took a few moments to just take in the beauty before him.
"What are you staring at?" She asked him, and had a silly grin on her face. She didn't understand.
"Can't a man just stop, take in and recognize how beautiful his wife is?"
His words made her blush. She felt her face warm up, "I suppose so. But let's get down to business."
He chuckled at her reaction, but regained his composure, "This is… life changing." "And there's so much that we'll need to prepare for."
"I know. Especially since I'm the one that will go through the whole ordeal that comes with it. Physically and mentally."
Her response reminded him of what he wanted to ask her.
"That's why I want to know, how do you feel about this?" "And I want your full, honest opinion."
She heavily sighed, she didn't know how exactly to answer his question.
"I just…. I don't know. I never expected something like this to happen, at least not this soon. We've only been married a year."
"Yeah. I wonder what happened…."
Jyn almost busted out in laughter, but contained it to giggles, "Are you serious?!" "This isn't exactly a time to laugh."
"You found that funny?" he wondered, and smiled sheepishly, "Good, because I think that's just what you needed."
"It did feel good. Maybe you're right."
"I don't want to boast, but that's not unusual." "However, in all seriousness, I want you to know that no matter what happens, I'll do everything I can to help and be there for you."
All she could do was smile. Having someone that truly cared for her wasn't something she had the privilege to, but she loved every minute of it, everyday. After Saw abandoned her, she was left to care for herself. No one did that for her, or at least not long term.
"You know, I think we should call it a night." she suggested to Cassian as she stood up and pulled the blankets back.
His eyes lit up with pleasure, "I think you're right this time. You crawl in, and I'll be right beside you in a few minutes."
She did as he told, and waited. When he finally came back to the bed, she had a childlike grin on her face. The lights went out, and it was just the two of them.
Having the comfort of each other was something Jyn and Cassian both cherished. Eventually that would change, but for now, all they had to worry about was themselves.
