(ONE-SHOT)
...
"Okay, Divine One. It's time for me to come clean." Yunaka had gone back and forth with herself for the longest time on whether or not she should reveal the full scope of her past to the Divine Dragon. She had almost done so once before but when the actual moment of truth came, she just couldn't get the words out. She felt pathetic, but to her surprise Alear wasn't upset at all. He could see how difficult trying to talk about her past was and reminded her that he wouldn't pry. He only wanted to hear the truth when she was ready.
"It's alright, you don't have to tell me." He assured her.
''But I..." she spoke dejectedly.
"I can see how hard this is for you. It's obvious just looking at your face. I told you before that I wouldn't pry. It really is as simple as that."
"You're really ok with me keeping a secret from you like this?" She asked in surprise.
"Of course. I have secrets too, you know. There's no need to make yourself uncomfortable." Alear re-assured. "I only want to hear what you are ready to tell me."
"Thank you. Sincerely."
She really meant it back then too. She was grateful that Alear wouldn't try to pry and would let her move at her own pace. She'd tried to force herself when she wasn't ready, but now that some much-needed time had passed and she and the Divine One were closer than they'd ever been, now was as good a time as any to try again. She was nervous of course, very nervous, but this time she would finally get the words out.
"I know you said you wouldn't pry, and you only want to hear what I'm ready to say. But I'm as ready as I'm ever gonna get, and you have a right to know."
"If you're sure this is what you want, I'm here to listen." The Divine One spoke.
"Ok... Here goes." Moment of truth time. She steeled her resolve and let the words flow. "My name used to be Larimar. I changed it to get away from my old life... as an assassin. "
She'd finally said it.
"Go on."
She continued. "I was never too attached to Larimar... or to her parents, who left her when she was young. She is my past though. In that sense, she'll always be a part of me. Which means, even though I've moved on, you can't know the real me without her."
"It was brave of you to tell me all that. I do want to know the real you. The value of this conversation is not lost on me." Alear said gently.
"I appreciate that. Thank you, Divine One."
It felt good to finally let go of the secret she'd been carrying for so long. She felt lighter, as if a huge weight had been lifted off her shoulders. The look in the Divine Dragon's eyes hadn't changed either after learning about her previous occupation. There was no hate, disgust, or even a look of betrayal. He still saw her as he always had since she joined the party.
"Of course. Since you trusted me with your secret, Yanaka, I guess I'd better tell you mine."
His words had genuinely caught her by surprise. Secret? What secret? "I didn't even know you had one."
The Divine One looked a little nervous now but nevertheless pressed on. "When you told how glad you were to fight alongside me, I wanted to jump for joy."
Now she was really confused. He wanted to jump for joy. "Why?"
"Because somewhere along the way, I stopped being able to imagine my life without you in it." He answered. "There's no one more important to me than you. I want you by my side, always. So, I guess that's my secret."
"Divine One..." She didn't really know what to say. That was without a shadow of a doubt the nicest thing anyone's ever said to her.
"If you'll accept it, I'd like you to have the Pact Ring." Alear continued as he reached into his pocket to retrieve the legendary item. It was a beautiful blue octagon shaped gem that sat comfortably within a silver and gold ring.
"But that ring is precious to you..." She was stunned. The Pact Ring was one of a kind and what it symbolized was beyond powerful. The Divine Dragon only bestowed such a gift to strengthen the most meaningful of bonds. If he was trying to give it to her then...
"You're precious to me, which is why I want you to have it." He explained. "Whether we're talking about your past self, your current self, whatever- I cherish all of you."
She could feel herself beginning to tear up hearing the Divine Dragon speak. This was now the nicest thing anyone's ever said to her. Admittedly she did love Alear but was afraid her past would get in the way somehow. With it out in the open and the Divine One pretty much confessing to her...
"You're amazing! I want to know everything about you. I want to accept all of you like you've accepted me. No more lies, no more secrets. I want to be with you the rest of my life. That's how I truly feel."
Alear smiled. "I feel the same way. Let's be true to each other, from now on, as partners."
"Happily, Alear." She graciously accepted the Pact Ring and slipped it on her finger before taking the Divine One's hands in hers. Both of them were smiling at each other so warmly she could feel her heart beating within her chest. "A new chapter starts today. I cannot wait to see what our future holds."
That was a sentiment the Divine Dragon also shared, and the pair shared their very first kiss against the setting sun.
No longer burdened by lies, she smiled unreservedly at the Divine One. Slowly but surely over time, she shared each and every bit of her troubled past with her love as she leaves it behind. When not in battle she kept the Pact Ring in a golden box that she treasured more than life itself. She also gifted the Divine Dragon with her gold star, though she asked he not mention that to anyone.
Eventually the war against the Fell Dragon Sombron came to end and Alear ascended into the role of the new Divine Dragon Monarch. The bonds he formed with the rulers of the other nations resulted in a long-lasting peace. She and Alear were soon wed, and she'd become the new divine monarch's steadiest supporter behind the scenes.
Millennia after Millennia ticked by, and historians later found a journal recorded by one of the couples many children. Alear and Yunaka loved each other and their family dearly.
Author's Notes: There's a surprising lack of Alear/Yunaka on this site. Hopefully this little one-shot inspires others to create some content for this pairing. I hope you all enjoy this mini story.
