Percy had never been to a high school party before, but he had seen enough movies to know what to expect. As soon as he arrived at Jason's house, he was hit with a wall of sound and the smell of alcohol. The party was in full swing, and there were people everywhere.
Jason introduced Percy to a few of his friends, but Percy found it hard to keep track of their names amidst the chaos of the party. He wandered around for a while, sipping on a cup of punch and trying not to feel too awkward.
As the night wore on, Percy started to feel more and more out of place. He wasn't much of a drinker, and the loud music and flashing lights were starting to give him a headache. He was just about to slip out the back door when he felt a tap on his shoulder.
"Hey, Percy," a voice said. It was Annabeth. Percy couldn't help feeling a little star-struck.
"Hey," he said, trying to sound cool.
Annabeth grinned. "You're not much of a partier, are you?" she asked.
Percy shook his head, feeling a little embarrassed. "No, I guess not," he admitted.
Annabeth shrugged. "It's not my thing either. Hey, listen. I'm part of a study group that meets every Thursday after school. You should come to check it out."
Percy felt a spark of excitement. He had been hoping to make more friends at Goode High, and Annabeth seemed like the perfect person to hang out with. "That sounds great," he said.
The study group turned out to be much more enjoyable than the party. It was just Annabeth and a few other students, and they spent most of the time discussing books and movies rather than studying. Percy felt like he was starting to fit in, and he was grateful for Annabeth's invitation.
The next day, Percy woke up feeling excited to go to school. He was finally starting to feel like he belonged. The morning went by quickly, and before he knew it, it was time for he made his way to the cafeteria, he heard the sound of music coming from the courtyard. As he got closer, he saw a group of students gathered in a circle, rapping back and forth to each other.
Percy had always loved music, but he had never been much of a rapper. Still, something about the energy of the cipher drew him in. He found himself edging closer to the group, watching as they took turns freestyling.
Finally, someone gestured for him to step into the circle. Percy felt his heart race with excitement and nervousness. He had never rapped in front of a group before, but he couldn't resist the challenge.
As the beat started up, Percy took a deep breath and began to spit out the words that had been running through his head all morning. "Dear God, I don't wanna be famous, I just wanna be somebody," he rapped, his voice ringing out loud and clear.
The other students stared at him in surprise, but Percy didn't let that stop him. He kept rapping, pouring his heart into the words. "I don't wanna be rich, I just wanna be happy. I don't wanna be cool, I just wanna be me."
As he finished, the crowd erupted into cheers and applause. Percy felt a rush of adrenaline like he had just accomplished something amazing. He glanced over at Annabeth, who was grinning from ear to ear.
"That was amazing!" she said, clapping him on the back. "I had no idea you could rap like that."Percy shrugged, feeling a little embarrassed. "Thanks," he said. "I don't have much experience, but it was fun."
Annabeth looked at him thoughtfully. "You know, I think you have a lot of potential," she said. "I challenge you to write a rap about our English class. We can perform it at the next cipher."
Percy's eyes widened. He had never written a rap before, let alone one about English class. But something about the challenge excited him. "You're on," he said, grinning.
For the rest of the day, Percy couldn't stop thinking about the challenge. He scribbled down ideas during class and even skipped lunch to work on his lyrics. By the end of the day, he had a rough draft that he was pretty proud of.
At the study group that afternoon, he showed his lyrics to Annabeth and the others. They listened intently as he rapped the words out loud, their faces lighting up with excitement.
"That's awesome," one of the other students said. "I can't wait to hear it at the cipher."
Percy felt a sense of pride and accomplishment wash over him. He was finally starting to feel like he belonged at Goode High.
