It was a beautiful night in Paris, France. The city of lights was the perfect place for a dream date. And that was where Jake Long aka the American Dragon, and Rose aka the Huntsgirl were at. Or so it would seem.

"So, you don't remember anything about your parents?" Jake asked as she walked with Rose, carrying crepes. Her hair was done in a long ponytail and she was wearing the most beautiful white dress ever designed.

"They died right after I was born." Rose recalled sadly. "The Huntsman raised me. My earliest memories are lying in my Huntscrib, crying out for my Huntsnanny to change my Huntsdiapers."

"Mine too! Except for the nanny and Hunts…everything." Jake smiled awkwardly, trying to keep Rose happy during their date. He then decided to change the subject. "On a less depressing note, these are the best crepes ever."

Rose smiled and laughed. She loved Jake with her whole heart. But the idea of a Huntsgirl, the most fearsome hunter of magical creatures dating a dragon, would never sit well with the Huntsman and his clan. "Yeah, but if we're having dream crepes, we might as make them real dream crepes." She then used her imagination to make the crepe bigger than real life. After all, their dream date was in part to the special Dream Charm.

"Speaking of dreams, let's give a warm aloha to mine! You gotta love the Dream Charms!" Jake smirked, using the Dream Charm to transport the both of them into Jake's dream: a table for the two of them, on a beach in Hawaii.

"This is great." Rose smiled before sighing. "Jake, I would never have the courage to tell you this in the real world, but I…"

Jake groaned as the sound of his alarm finally ended his dream date. He sighed sadly, knowing he'll have to wait till their next dream date to find out what Rose had wanted to say to him. But he snapped out of his sadness when he looked at his alarm clock. "8:15?!" Jake exclaimed, knowing he was already late for school. "Aw man!"

At Milliard Filmore Middle School, Jake rushed inside, hoping he wouldn't get caught, but his way was then blocked by Principal Rotwood! "Oh no." Jake gulped, knowing he was in serious trouble, after having been tardy way too many times.

"Mister Long, you are tardy yet again." Rotwood scolded. "It would be my pleasure to give you detention for the rest of the year after being tardy over this many times! But, your grandfather and apparently the school board believe otherwise." He then handed Jake a slip of paper. Confused, Jake reads it.

"Mister Jacob Long, we are pleased to inform you that you have been excused from your classes for the next month." Jake read before his eyes bugged out with happiness and excitement. "A whole month with no school?!"

"DO NOT GET OVERLY EXCITED YET!" Rotwood bellowed, waving his ruler at Jake. "After your free ride, you will be back in my custody. You better not be tardy again. DO YOU UNDERSTAND?!" Jake nodded timidly. "Okie dokie. Enjoy your free month."

As soon as he was gone, Jake shouted in celebration. "I'M FREE! I'M FREE!" He then began to run out the door as soon as the class bell rang and almost ran over his best friends, Trixie and Spud.

"Whoa there, Jakey! What're you so happy and giddy about?" Trixie asked with a grin and arched eyebrow.

"Sorry Trixs! But Gramps got me out of school for an entire month!" Jake happily exclaimed. Both of his friends' mouths dropped in shock. "He probably needs me for a special magical quest or to protect a Peagus. I don't know, but don't care! It's a month of no school! I'll catch ya guys at the arcade later!" He then headed out the door while Spud and Trixie were still shocked.

"Wait a darn minute! He gets a free ride while we have to suffer for the next thirty days?!" Trixie asked. "Something doesn't seem right about this."

"Didn't you hear him, Trixs? Who cares?!" Spud smiled. Trixie sighed, knowing Spud can be weird sometimes.

Jake happily ran out of the school, but then stopped in front of a black limousine and a man in a dark suit and sunglasses. He was perplexed as to why that was here. "Jake Long?" the man asked.

"That's me. Did I win the lottery?" Jake asked with a sly grin, to which the man chuckled dryly.

"Nope." the man said before handing him a card. "I'm Agent Coulson of S.H.I.E.L.D." Jake read the card that said, 'Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division'. Why was a secret agency interested in him anyways?

"Well, you got the name right." Jake joked, but saw Coulson didn't even crack a smile.

"I've been ordered by your grandfather to bring you to his shop, pronto. Get in." Agent Coulson said, opening the door. Jake was confused. How come grandpa didn't even mention this man? But he had no choice but to trust him as he slipped into the backseat. Coulson hopped into the driver's side and the limo drove off.

"Wow. This is surely a weird day." Jake said with an awkward smile. "One minute, I'm free from school for a whole month. The next though? I'm picked up by some 007 agent."

Coulson actually managed to crack a grin at that. "Yes, but I'm sure you had plenty of weird days, being half dragon and all." he said.

Jake's eyes went wide in shock and worry, and he felt the pace of his heartbeat go faster. How in the world did this man know about dragons?! The world of magical creatures was supposed to remain a secret to the human world. And if S.H.I.E.L.D. knew about them, how long would it be before other government agencies discovered them?

"Uh…what dragons? I'm not a dragon!" Jake smiled nervously, laughing. "And even if there were dragons, they wouldn't be hiding in plain sight here in NYC."

Couslon smirked a little. "Honestly kid, I saw terrorists who lied better than you." he said, but Jake got even more nervous. "I was once a skeptic like most people in this world, but all that changed when I saw my very first magical creature. Wanna guess what it was?" Jake remained silent. "Jake, you can trust me. Why wouldn't your grandfather ask me to pick you up anyway?"

Jake still wasn't sure what to do. But if grandpa trusted him, that was all that matters. "A mermaid?" he asked. Coulson shook his head. "A troll? A unicorn?"

"Close. A pegasus." Coulson smiled. Jake actually managed to relax and even smiled a bit at Coulson saying he once saw a pegasus. "Yep. It was white, beautiful, and had perfect wings. My boss told me about their existence, but I wasn't ready to believe him. Until he showed me it. And boy was it special. Changed my whole world view."

"That's nice to know, Mr. Coulson. But how is it that you and your boss know about magical creatures?" Jake asked.

"We'll tell you more once we reach your grandfather's shop." Coulson promised. Jake sat back and fiddled with his hands, still nervous but now curious. How come this S.H.I.E.L.D. knew about him? And why didn't his grandfather tell him?

A few hours later, in study hall, Trixie's mind was still on how Jake was able to get out of school while Spud fell asleep and slobbered on the table. "Spud! You're slobbering! I did not hear my shoes ask for a spit shine!" Trixie exclaimed, waking Spud up.

"Wow. I can't believe I fell asleep in study hall." Spud said before pulling out a neck pillow, a night cap, sleep mask, and a thermos filled with coco. "Without making use of my special stash study hall slumber wear. The quiet. The calm. My trusty jug of sleepy time coco. Nothing says night night like the school library." He then spilled his coco onto the table was he forgot to take off his sleep mask.

"Hey Spud, Trixie. Any of you guys seen Jake?" Rose asked as she entered the library.

"I thought you would know." Trixie scoffed. "He's been excused from all classes for the next month."

"What a lucky dog!" Spud pouted, facing the other way. Rose was confused.

"Jake didn't tell me about this." Rose said. "Why would he be excused from school for a whole month?" She then shrugged. "I'll just tell him during our next dream date tonight."

"You lucky girl!" Trixie smirked.

"It's amazing. We can hang out without worrying about the Huntsclan capturing us." Rose smiled. "See ya later, guys." She then left and began wondering if Jake was alright.

The limo finally pulled up in front of Lao's electronics shop. Jake and Coulson exited the vehicle and entered to find Lao Shi, Jake's grandfather, talking to someone while sipping some tea. "Uh, Gramps?" he called out.

"Jake, you're just in time." Lao smiled. "I'd like you to meet my old friend, Nick Fury." Jake saw the other man stand up. He was wearing a leather jacket and an eyepatch. Jake was a little bit intimidated by this man, but managed a friendly, if not somewhat nervous smile.

"Hi. What about dawg?" Jake smiled before noticing Fury's eyepatch. "Where's your other eye?"

"What?" Nick scoffed with a smirk.

"Do your ears work?" Jake asked loudly, thinking Fury was also deaf. "Why did you bring me…"

"Kid, I'm not deaf. I only have one working eye." Fury said, clearly annoyed.

"Whoops. Sorry about that. But what did happen to your eye?" Jake asked with a sheepish smile.

"I'm afraid that information is classified." Coulson said as Jake faced with grandfather with a frown.

"Gramps, you said the magical world must remain secret." Jake told his grandfather, still confused as to why S.H.I.E.L.D. would know about their existence.

"Yes Jake, but luckily, there are special exceptions. And we can trust these people, as they are our allies." Lao smiled, pulling out a scrapbook from the 60s, and turning the page to what appeared to be a group of soldiers encountering a unicorn.

"In 1968, the most tumultuous year ever in the 20th century, S.H.I.E.L.D. discovered the existence of magical creatures." Coulson explained as Lao flipped the scrapbook to show S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel interacting with the magical creatures in very friendly ways. "When the creatures learned that we can be trusted, they repaid us." Lao then showed Jake a group of unicorns, trolls, and dragons fighting with soldiers in Vietnam. Jake was more than blown away by this. "And we repaid their debt by making the Council of Dragons a subdivision of S.H.I.E.L.D. They help us and we help them back. Put in simple terms."

"And if it weren't for that, you would not be here." Fury said, looking at Jake. "Jake, I think highly of you. And so does your grandfather. I wanna talk to you about the Avenger Initiative."

Jake was still trying to wrap his young mind around all this. "What is that?" Jake simply asked.

"We're trying to put together a group of remarkable heroes who could fight the battles we never could. And you, Jake Long, are one of them." Fury explained. A grin then crossed Jake's lips. "I wanna give you a chance. Are you in?"

Jake thought about it. Being part of a group of heroes would be nice, but there was only one thing he truly wanted. "I'll do it. But, there's one condition. Have you heard of the Huntsclan?" he asked.

Fury scoffed and smirked. "Heard about them? Why, we've been hunting those suckers and their leader down for 20 goddamn years." Fury explained. "Their part of our Top 10 Most Wanted List."

"Well, there's this girl named Rose, who left the Hunts Academy. She doesn't want to be a Huntsgirl anymore. I can't fight without her. She means everything to me. So, she either joins or it's no deal." Jake said firmly.

"Deal." Fury said without missing a beat, making Jake smile. He finally has the chance to give Rose a normal life without the Huntsman. "I'll be giving you a special test this week. If you pass, we'll take you one step further." Fury said as he and Coulson packed up their stuff.

Jake's eyes went wide. "A test? When?" Jake asked, but Fury remained silent. "What's it on? Interrogation? Magical charms? How can I even pass this test if you won't let me know?"

"You'll figure out a way, kid. And know this: I got my eye on you." Fury said. "Get some rest. You've got a big month ahead of you."

Jake smiled and waved as Fury and Coulson left but then worriedly flopped onto the couch. "Aw man!"
