Chapter 3-The Attack
Jenner's P.O.V
Doctor Edwin Jenner sat in his chair with a glass of wine. Everything he had worked for was gone. All of the research was gone. He took a drink of his wine. "Dad," He looks at the entrance to the room and at his daughter. "What are you doing?"
"Waiting for the clock to go down, it's gone," Jenner says.
"So we wait to die?" His daughter, Blaire, asks. Blaire has pale skin, green eyes, and long dark brown hair. She has a toned build and is of average height.
"Yeah," Jenner answers.
"That is not what Mom would want, for us to stay and die."
"She wanted me to try and cure this thing, and I couldn't. If we go out there, we die," Jenner growls.
"You don't know that," Blaire growls. "I don't want to die, Dad. Stay if you want, but let me go. If this is your choice, so be it, but don't make me down with you."
Jenner looks at her and nods. "Go pack then. Get whatever supplies you can take."
Blaire nods as she leaves the room.
Davina's P.O.V
Davina looked at her father as he walked up to them. "I need you to hand some guns out."
"To who?" Davina asks.
"Give a handgun to Daryl, Amy, Jim, Morales, Lori, T-dog, and Glenn. Give Dale a rifle. Our family is carrying, and so are Pedro, Reed, and Connor," Merle tells Davina.
"Have you talked with anybody else about this?"
"Shane and Daryl. Shane agreed. He's the leader."
"Alright," Davina says as she grabs the gun bag. She walks up to Daryl and hands him a Glock.
"Thanks," He says as he takes it.
"You doing okay, Uncle Daryl?"
"Yeah, I'm fine, better than I've been in the last couple of months," He says as he kisses her head. "Now go on."
Davina smiles as she walks over to Dale and hands the older man a rifle. "Thanks," Dale says as he looks at her. "You don't look like your father. You have blond hair."
"I take more after my mother. Not that I ever met her."
"Glad you're here. We could use some people who know what it's like out there," Dale says. She nods as Jim walks up to them.
"You ready to take that van apart?" Jim asks Dale, who nods as Davina holds a handgun out to the man who takes it, and he walks away with Dale. She goes around and gives a gun to Glenn, T-dog, and Morales and walks up to Lori. She holds the gun out of the woman who looks at it.
"I've killed a decent amount of them. You want to have a gun with you," Davina says. "I know you don't like my Dad or my Uncle. It's clear on your face, but you love your son, and this is how we protect our loved ones."
Lori hesitantly takes the gun, and Davina walks over to Amy, who is talking with her sister. She holds a gun out to Amy. "She doesn't need that," Andrea says as she stands in front of her sister.
"Then she can tell me," Davina says. "Move."
Andrea glares at the blond woman. Amy moves her sister to the side and takes the gun. "Thank you."
Davina nods as she walks away.
Shane's P.O.V
Shane walks up to Carol as she packs up the tent she is staying in with Sophia. "How are you doing, Carol?"
"Better," Carol says. "Did you see Sophia?"
"She's with Lori and Carl," Shane says. "Carol, I wanna apologize. For letting what happened, happen, I should have beat the shit out of Edd during our first week in camp."
"Why didn't you?" Carol asks. "Stop him?"
"I didn't want to cause any problems in camp," Shane answers. "I'm sorry, I wanna make it up to you. Anyway, I can."
"Can you teach Sophia and me how to shoot?" Carol asks.
"I can. But until then," Shane says as he pulls a knife out and hands it to her. "You should carry something. I'll give one to Sophia, too, if you want me to."
"You think she needs to?"
"She would be safer," Shane says.
"Alright," Carol says, and Shane nods as he walks away.
T-dog's P.O.V
T-dog puts a bag in the truck and looks at Freya as she sets another one in the bed. "What you did for Carol, well, thank you, she deserves better."
"She does," Freya says. "My brother told me what you did, staying back there with him."
"I dropped the keys. I'm not claiming to be a saint, but I would never leave a man like that, especially when I'm the reason he got trapped there. I had to."
"I haven't met a lot of good men since this all went down, Pedro, Reed, and Connor. I met a man in a store while I was searching for supplies. He acted nice, and when he got close, he attacked me. I put my knife in his stomach and then his head. I hope you never have to kill anybody, Theodore."
"I hope so. T-dog works, by the way."
"I know. I like Theodore more," Freya says as she walks away from the man.
Rick's P.O.V
Rick walked up to Shane and stared at the man. "Davina is handing out guns?" Rick asks.
"To people who can use them, I talked with Merle and Daryl, and they agreed. Lori can shoot. I taught Glenn and T-dog what I could with no guns. Jim hunted before the turn, Amy's Dad taught her how to shoot, and Dale is our lookout."
"You didn't think to talk with me?"
"Rick, you just woke up, man. Enjoy the time with your family. We'll deal with getting to Pedro's ranch," Shane tells him. "Alright."
Rick doesn't say anything, but he walks away from the man.
Shane's P.O.V
Shane looked at Merle as he talked with his group. "Shane, come here," Merle says. Shane walks over to the Dixons, Reed, Connor, and Pedro. "You have the most authority here. We wanna make some additions to the camp until we leave."
"What kind of additions?" Shane asks.
"We wanna put some of the cars up as perimeter. It will keep walkers from the road away from the camp, I can't say much about the woods, but it will keep us safer."
"Do it," Shane tells him. "It will make the camp a little safer."
"Alright, let's get to work."
Rick's P.O.V
The camp watched as the Dixons moved the cars in place. "What are they doing?" Rick asks Shane as he watches.
"Making the camp safer. It will make the camp better."
"Man, none of the walkers are going to be coming up here," Rick says loud enough for the camp to hear.
"We had a walker in camp this morning," Shane says.
"They are just making it harder for us to get out when we need to," Rick says, and Shane sees Lori and Andrea agreeing with Rick. "You know I'm right, man."
Shane stays silent for a second before he shakes his head. "Merle is right. This will keep us safe. His daughters and Freya were in the city for three months, and so were Connor, Reed, and Pedro. They know how to fight walkers better than any of us, maybe besides Glenn. What do you think, Glenn? Have you been to the city more than any of us? You think this is a waste of time?"
"No," Glenn says. "If more than a couple of walkers show up, we'll be glad for those cars."
"You will be," Freya says as she walks up to them. "We've already handed out weapons, and you all should carry a knife when the walkers come, or even if they don't, you wanna go for the head. They are slow, but if they get you, they will take you down, and your death will be slow and painful."
"Anything more advice?" Rick asks.
"Sure, don't shoot your gun, especially around a lot of them. It could get people trapped or killed," She says while staring at him before she walks away.
Shane nods as he walks over toward the Dixons.
Blaire's P.O.V
Blaire stood in the kitchen, putting food in a bag. She turned around when she heard footsteps. "I'll leave some food for you. You shouldn't have to starve in your last few days."
"You were right," Jenner says. "This isn't what your mother would have wanted. If you go out there, you'll die."
"If I stay here, I'll die, maybe my death will be slow out there, or maybe I'll find some good people, and we'll find a safe place and live."
"How will you get out of the city."
"My car should still be out there," Blaire says.
Jenner nods as he grabs a can and puts it in his bag. "We'll die together them."
Blaire smiles at her father as she continues to put food in her bag.
After they finished packing their food and whatever guns they had, they walked back to the main room, and Jenner put the codes in, and the front door opened. They walk through the building until they get to the elevator and ride up. They walked to the door and then walked outside. They quickly ran to Blaire's car, which was across the street. They stop when they see two walkers by the car. Blaire raises her gun and shoots the two walkers in the head, and runs to the car. She climbs in the driver's side door, and Jenner climbs in the passengers side door. She quickly starts to the car and drives away.
No one's P.O.V
The group sat around a fire that night, eating. Ed was away from the group sitting in his tent that was still up. Morales looks at Dale with a grin. Merle sat between Davina and Hope.
"I got to ask you, man. It's been driving me crazy," Morales says to Dale.
"What?" Dale questions with a smile.
"That watch," Morales states as he looks at the watch.
"What's wrong with my watch?" Dale asks.
"I see you every day at the same time winding that thing. Like a village priest saying mass," Morales says after taking a bite.
"You know, I've seen that too, and it didn't make much sense to me either," Glenn says. Dale nods with a smile.
"I'm missing the point," Dale tells them as they hear the fire crack.
"Unless I've misread the signs, the world seems to have come to an end. At least hit a speed bump for a good long while," Jacqui explains.
"But there's you every day winding that stupid watch," T-dog says.
"Time it's important to keep track, isn't it?" Dale asks. "The days, at least. Don't you think, Andrea? Amy? Daryl? Back me up here," Dale says.
"It made sense when we had jobs, man. Not anymore," Daryl answers.
"I like what a father said to his son when he gave him a watch. That had been handed down through generations. He said, "I give you the mausoleum of all hopes and desire, which will fit your individual needs no better than it fit mine or my father's before me. I give it to you not that you may remember time. But that you may forget it for a moment now and then and not spend all of your breath trying to conquer it," Dale says. The group stares at Dale in silence.
"You are so weird," Amy says, breaking the silence and causing the group to laugh.
Amy stands up. "What are you doing?" Andrea asks.
"I gotta pee," Amy says as she walks up to the R.V.
"So you three know how to shoot a bow?" Dale asks Freya, Davina, and Hope, who nod.
"Dad insisted that we did. Every weekend he could, he would take us hunting," Hope says with a smile. The door opens.
"We're out of toilet paper?" Amy asks. A walker grabs her arm and bites it making her let out a scream. The group turns around and sees the walkers as they come into the camp. They quickly stand up and start to shoot walkers as they come out of the woods.
"Davina, Freya, with me!" Merle shouts as he shoots the walker beside Amy in the head. He quickly runs up to the sobbing woman as Freya and Davina cover him. "Get her into the R.V., take the arm, Freya, give her blood."
"We can't do that," Davina says.
"You have some training. Do it," Merle tells his daughter, who slowly nods as she takes Amy into the R.V., and Freya follows as Merle shoots another walker in the head. "Get up here, y'all!"
Jim shoots a walker through the head as another grabs his side. The tip of Connor's sword comes out of its mouth before it can bite Jim. Connor swings his sword at another walker taking its head off. "Come on, we gotta get up there," Jim nods as he shoots another walker and follows the man up to the R.V.
Shane shoots a walker in the head as Carol withdraws the knife she had and stabs one in the eye. Shane shoots one behind Sophia and looks at Carol. "Get her up there!" Shane orders the woman, who nods as she takes her daughter up to the R.V.
Daryl shoots the last walker in the head. They look around as a scream comes from the R.V. Merle looks at the walkers that are being held off by the cars. "Let's get them, now," Merle says. They nod as they follow him. Merle, Daryl, Jim, Shane, Connor, Reed, Freya, Hope, and Glenn kill the walkers from across the car.
Merle looks at Rick after they are done. "I just saved some lives, Officer Friendly. You don't know shit, Rick. Let the adults handle keeping us alive," Merle walks away. "Let's get these bodies cleaned up!"
Thanks for reading. Next chapter, The group deals with the aftermath of the attack. Blaire and Jenner meet an ally, and the group decides their next move. As always, suggestions, ideas, and feedback are welcomed. Until next time.
