Chapter 4-Leaving the quarry
Davina's P.O.V
Davina sat by Amy as the woman lay in the bed. She looked at Andrea as she walked into the R.V. She looked at the tube that was giving blood to Amy. "You don't know her blood type," Andrea says.
"I don't need to. I'm O negative," Davina says. "She doesn't have a fever, Andrea. I think it worked."
"How is she going to live like this in this world?"
"She'll figure it out. We'll help her," Davina says.
"I gotta get back out there, will you?"
"Of course," Davina says. "If anything happens. I'll get you."
Andrea nods as she walks away.
Daryl's P.O.V
Daryl puts a body in the truck and looks at his brother. "This fucks up our plans," Daryl says.
"Everything is already packed up. We'll leave when they are buried."
"During the middle of the day?" Daryl asks.
"We gotta get out of here before more show up. Those gunshots would have drawn them."
"Alright," Daryl says. "We have two kids alive whose parents didn't make it."
"Anybody offer to take them in?" Merle asks.
"Mmmhmm," Daryl says. "One girl and one boy, um, Jim is going to take in the boy, and I said I'd take in the girl."
"You sure about that?" Merle asks his brother, who nods as he walks away. Daryl walks up to the girl who is sitting by the R.V.
"How old are you, sweetheart?"
"13," She answers. "I'm Rowan."
"Daryl, I'm sorry about your Dad. We'll make sure his body is taken care of. If it's okay with you, I'll take care of you and keep you safe."
Rowan nods. Rowan was 5 feet in height. She was slim and had dark brown hair and eyes. "Can we get my stuff?"
"Yeah," Daryl says as she leads him toward where her tent was.
Connor's P.O.V
Connor walked up to Jim. "Yesterday, while we were packing, why were you digging?"
"Doesn't matter. Shane and Rick stopped me," Jim says. "It didn't bother anybody."
"But you had a reason."
"Yeah, I did," Jim says. "I had a dream about last night. I didn't remember it until after."
"You okay? That walker didn't get you?" Connor asks.
"I'm fine," Jim says as he pulls his shirt up. "No bites, I'm okay."
"Good," Connor says. Connor looks behind them at the boy who is sitting by the tree drawing. "What's his name?"
"Arthur," Jim answers. Arthur was 14 and stood at five-two in height. He was slim and had short blond hair and blue eyes. "He needs someone."
"You'll take good care of him. I know it."
Merle's P.O.V
Merle put the last body in the back of the truck and walked over to where the rest of the group was waiting. "What's our next move?" Lori asks after a moment.
"We'll bury these bodies and leave," Merle says as he looks at Shane, who nods.
"We don't want to be here any longer than we have to. We'll be out of here pretty soon. We bury the bodies and leave at noon."
"What about Amy?" Reed asks.
"What about her?" Andrea asks.
"She was a bit last night," Reed says.
"She doesn't have a fever," Hope says. "By this point, she would have already had a fever."
"We took the arm off and stopped the spread. She should be fine," Shane says. "That is the end of this discussion. Let's get these bodies buried and get the hell out of here."
Blaire's P.O.V
Blaire drove out of the car out of Atlanta. "We're out of the city," She says with a smile.
"So where to now?" Jenner asks his daughter.
"I don't know," She says. "We get away from the city and then figure out our next move."
Jenner nods as they continue to drive. "Do you have a map in here?"
"Yeah, I do," Blaire tells him. "Glovebox," She tells him as she points at the glove box. She looks up and sees a man on the road and slams on her brakes. The car screeches to a stop. Blaire grabs her gun and climbs out of the car. "Put your hands up! Now!" She shouts at the man.
"Please, I need help," The man says. "My Dad needs help."
"What happened to him."
"He got shot, please," He says. Jenner looks at his daughter, who nods.
"Show us," She tells him. He nods as he leads them into the woods, where a black man is lying against the tree. Behind him was a man lying on the ground, dead. "Where happened?"
"He attacked us," The teenager says. "My dad killed him," He says as Blaire looks at the wound.
"He should be fine," Blaire says. "Looks like it grazed him."
"How'd you kill him?" Jenner asks the man.
"Shot him in the chest," The man says.
"Give me your knife," Jenner tells the teenager, who holds the knife out to Jenner, who takes it and walks over to the man and stabs him in the head.
"What are you doing?" The teenager asks.
"He's going to turn."
"He wasn't bitten."
"Doesn't matter," Jenner says. "I worked for the C.D.C. I studied the virus. It doesn't matter how you die. You'll turn. I'm Edwin Jenner."
"I'm Blaire, his daughter."
"I'm Jackson. This is my son Noah."
"Alright, let's get you to my car. Is there anybody else around here?"
"We have a small camp a mile up the road. My wife and sons are there."
"Alright, let's get you back to them."
They nod as Jenner helps Noah get Jackson up.
Shane's P.O.V.
The group stood together after burying the bodies. "Alright, we'll break off. Everybody knows what cars they are in. We should be close to Senoia by tonight. When we camp out on the road, we'll have three lookouts. Then we'll switch off during the night. Drivers need to sleep, so they are off lookout duty," Shane says. "Tomorrow, we'll do a quick sweep of Senoia and then keep moving to Pedro's farm."
"You heard the man. Let's get on the road," Merle says.
"We're not going," Morales says. "We have family in Birmingham. We wanna be with our people."
"If you do this, you'll have nobody to cover your back," Shane says.
"I know. We have to do what is best for our family."
"Alright," Shane says as he goes to the bag and grabs a handgun and a box of ammo. He grabs a couple of cans of food and walks up to the man.
"You'll need it," Morales says.
"You'll need it more," Shane says. Morales nods as he takes the stuff. "Alright, let's move out."
Carol's P.O.V
Carol sat in the passenger seat of Shane's jeep. "You know you could have rode with Sophia," Shane says as he looks at her.
"I know, but I didn't want to have too many people. She'll be fine with Lori and Carl," Carol says.
"You did good last night. You took one of them out," Shane says. "I saw what you did to Ed. You okay?"
"It felt good," Carol answers after a moment. "Like all those years, he beat me. I took it all out on his body, and it felt good. I was alive, and he wasn't."
"Can't say I'll miss him," Shane says as they as they continue to drive.
"Are you going to tell, Rick?" Carol asks Shane, who looks at her. "About you and Lori?"
"Yeah, I plan on telling him tonight," Shane tells her, and Carol nods. They continued to drive until they reached a traffic jam. "Dammit," Shane says as the R.V. stops. He climbs out of the jeep and walks up to the rest of the group.
"We can't get the R.V. through here," Dale says.
"We'll have to move the cars then," Merle says. "We can't waste the fuel to turn around. If we all work together, we can have this place cleared in a few hours," Merle says. "Come on, y'all. Let's get to work, some of us will clear the cars, and the rest of us will search this place for supplies."
"This place is a graveyard," Lori says.
"Yes, it is," Freya says. "These people are dead. They won't need these supplies anymore. You heard Merle. Let's get to work," Freya says as she walks away from the group, and the rest of them slowly follow the Dixon sister.
Jim's P.O.V
Jim walked through the car with Arthur and Jacqui behind him. "You have a knife?" Jim asks Jacqui, who nods. "Arthur, you stay in my eyesight, you understand?"
"Yeah," Arthur says as he starts to look through the cars.
"I'm glad you have someone like you looking after him," Jacqui says as she searches a car.
"I just wanna keep him safe."
"You will," Jacqui says with a smile. "You're strong, Jim."
"I wasn't strong enough to save my own family," Jim says after a moment of silence.
"You can't think like that," Jacqui tells him. "You did all you could for your family, and I know you'll die before you let the walkers or anybody else get Arthur."
Jim nods as he continues to search the cars.
No one's P.O.V
The group searched the highway as Dale stood on watch on the highway. "See anything, Dale?" T-dog asks as he walks up to the R.V.
Dale looks through his scope. "We got one," Dale says as he continues to stare at the walker and sees more and more walkers. "T-dog, get everybody under the cars, now," Dale tells T-dog, who nods as he runs away from the man telling the group to get under the cars. T-dog ran up to Freya and motioned her under a truck.
"Come on," Freya tells him.
"I gotta warn the others."
"No one is in front of me. Get under here," Freya says. T-dog nods as he climbs under the car with Freya as they hear the growls of walkers.
Davina shut the door to the R.V. and slowly walked back to Amy, holding her finger to her mouth as she sat down beside the woman. "My sister," Amy says quietly.
"Will be fine," Davina tells her. "They'll be okay."
Shane was under a car with Merle watching Carl, Sophia, and Hope as they all lay under separate cars. Walkers started to shuffle past them. Shane stared at the kids as the walkers went across the highway. After the walkers past them, Sophia started to climb out from under the car and was almost grabbed by a walker making the child scream as she ran toward the woods. Shane quickly got out from under the car and ran towards the woods with Rick behind him.
The two men rolled down the hill and ran through the woods, watching Sophia and the walkers.
On the highway, Carol climbed out from under the car. "Sophia," Carol says with a sob as she runs towards the guard hall and starts to climb.
"Carol, don't," Merle says, making the woman stop.
"My baby is out there," Carol says between sobs.
"I know, and if it was one of my daughters, I would want to go after her too, but Shane and Rick ran after her. We have to be smart. We don't want people getting lost, give them a little bit, and if they aren't back in half and hour, we'll go out there."
Carol nods as she stares at the woods.
Thanks for reading. Next chapter, Shane and Rick work together to save Sophia. Blaire and Jenner talk with Noah's family, and the group runs into some new allies. As always, suggestions, ideas, and feedback are welcomed. Until next time.
