AUTHOR'S NOTE
Finally worked through that one plot-bunny that has been around for ages.
Turned out nicer than expected, even if it became a little shorter than I'd have liked.
Might be subject to changes.
Oh right, #ChatGPT supported :D
It was done and over.
The ceremonial duel was history and so would be the nameless pharaoh's journey.
Or that's at least what they thought when Yugi fell to his knees, tears streaming down his face at the prospect of losing his by far closest friend forever. Said friend had been the spirit of the Millenium Puzzle for over 3000 years, previously known as Yami, now Atem, who now also was finally free of his prison and approaching Yugi.
"If I was you, I wouldn't cry", he said, trying to encourage his partner. He helped Yugi stand and nodded, but then noticed something else in Yugi's eyes before Yugi smiled too; but for other reasons.
"Aibou..?", Atem whispered when he saw actual pain in his partner's eyes. It wasn't just emotional pain.. Yugi suffered. When the smaller duelist suddenly winced and fell back to his knees, Atem caught him, then went down with him, calling his name, but Yugi didn't hear much. Their friends, who'd watched until then, came running as well as they saw Yugi drop.
"It's.. good..", Yugi whispered, one heavy hand landing on Atem's. ".. other me.. it's okay.. it's my wish.. My prayer.. they accepted it.."
"What are you talking about, Aibou!", Atem demanded, holding his partner close. Yugi chuckled but hissed as that sent another wave of pain through him.
"I want you .. to live the life you never had.. I .. was always.. just the vessel..", Yugi said with a joking tone that took a whimpering note as his breath grew shallow. Atem couldn't believe what he was hearing. Didn't want to believe it. He was the one supposed to go to the afterlife, not Yugi!
But it seemed that fate had other plans.
As Yugi's breathing grew more labored, his friends gathered around, fear and confusion etched on their faces. Tea's eyes filled with tears, while Tristan and Joey clenched their fists, feeling powerless to help their friend.
"Yugi, don't talk like that," Tea choked out. "You're not just a vessel! You're our friend, and we all care about you."
Yugi managed a weak smile despite the pain, trying to reassure them. "I know.. and I'm grateful.. for all the memories and the love. But this is my choice. I want to give Atem the life he deserves."
Atem's eyes widened with realization. He finally understood what Yugi was trying to do. He was sacrificing himself so that Atem could experience the life he never had, free from the confines of the Millennium Puzzle. But the thought of losing Yugi was unbearable, and he couldn't accept it.
"No, Yugi. There has to be another way. We can find it together, just like we always have!" Atem said desperately, holding onto his partner even tighter.
Yugi shook his head weakly. "It's too late.. the choice is made.. and the price is being paid. But don't worry.. I'll always be with you, in spirit."
His friends watched in anguish, unable to do anything but offer their support. As Yugi's life force began to fade, a bright light enveloped him and Atem. The energy that once bound them together now shifted, transferring from Yugi to Atem. The light intensified, becoming almost blinding, and when it finally dissipated, Yugi was gone.
In his place lay a weakened Atem, now in a fully human form, his connection to the Millennium Puzzle severed. The weight of Yugi's sacrifice weighed heavily on him, but he knew he had to honor Yugi's final wish.
As they mourned the loss of their dear friend, Atem and the others vowed to keep Yugi's memory alive. They promised to face every challenge together, just as Yugi would have wanted.
And so, with Yugi's selfless act, Atem was given a second chance at life, free from the shadows of his ancient past. And although Yugi was gone, his spirit would live on in the hearts of his friends, who would cherish the memories they shared and the bond that could never be broken.
They had to drag Atem out of the tomb that, now that the ritual was over, had begun falling apart. Joey carried Yugi's lifeless body while Tea and Tristan made sure the traumatised Atem followed. Ishizu and Marik had made their way outside already, waiting for the others.
The second everyone was out, the tomb finally fell into itself with a heavy crash and a cloud of dust, taking the Millenium Items down with it, burying them permanently, never to be found again.
Tristan and Tea were still holding onto Atem who looked as if he'd collapse if they let go. Despite the hot desert sun he was shivering terribly, shock slowly settling in.
Joey was the first to break the silence. He was surprisingly stable for the fact he was holding the dead Yugi in his arms.
"Listen guys.. I know it's hard.. Damn it, I could punch him for doing this to us-" he referred to Yugi. "-.. but it was his choice"
Ishizu spoke softly. "Indeed.. Yugi Muto chose to ask the gods to take his life instead.. and it was the gods' decision to accept his sacrifice. There is a reason for this that we can not possibly comprehend. For now, we should get out of the heat. It would not become his soul if his body started decaying"
Atem stared at her. "You.. knew?"
She nodded. Sadly. "He asked me in a silent moment. I tried to change his mind, but he was adamant."
Atem clenched his fists, anger and sadness surging through him. He couldn't believe that Yugi had chosen such a path, and that Ishizu had known about it. But deep down, he also knew that it was pointless to blame anyone. Yugi had made the choice himself, and now all they could do was honor his memory and wishes.
As they made their way back to civilization, each of them was lost in their own thoughts, reflecting on Yugi's sacrifice and what it meant for their futures. Despite the overwhelming sadness, there was a sense of determination growing within them. Yugi had given Atem a new life, and they couldn't let it go to waste.
Back in Domino City, they arranged a small, intimate funeral for Yugi, attended by friends and family who had known and loved him. Atem stood by the grave, his eyes filled with unshed tears. He made a silent promise to Yugi that he would live his life to the fullest, never forgetting the bond they shared or the love that surrounded them.
He couldn't bear the thought of living under the same roof as Yugi had, but accepted nonetheless when Solomon offered to take him in. Atem felt he didn't deserve any of it and found solace in self-pity. Sometimes, you just have to lick your wounds to heal.
This went on for a week.
That sunday Solomon checked upon him, not expecting a change to the previous fifty times he'd come in that week, only to find Atem lying silently on the bed, as if someone had ripped his soul out. It wasn't quite off either.
Seeing Atem in such a state, Solomon couldn't help but feel a pang of heartache. He knew that both he and Atem were grieving deeply, but they couldn't continue to wallow in sorrow forever. It was time to help Atem find the strength to move forward.
"Atem," Solomon spoke gently as he sat down next to him on the bed, "I know how much you're hurting right now. We both lost someone dear to us, and it's natural to grieve. But we can't let our pain consume us. Yugi wouldn't want that for either of us."
Atem remained silent, his eyes glistening with tears, but he seemed to listen, which was a drastic improvement, compared to the days before, so Solomon continued.
"I won't tell you to stop grieving. If you want we can cry together. But please.. don't waste the life you've been given. You've barely eaten since you came here", the elder said and came closer. Atem didn't even turn his head.
".. I killed him..", was all Atem said. His voice was incredibly flat and factual. So much so that Solomon stopped in his tracks.
"Pardon?"
Atem's voice trembled as he repeated himself. "I killed him... If it weren't for me, Yugi would still be alive. He gave up his life for me, and I can't help but feel responsible."
Solomon sighed and shook his head, understanding Atem's guilt but knowing that it was misplaced. "Atem, Yugi made that choice himself. It wasn't your fault. You can't blame yourself for something that was out of your control."
The elder paused for a moment, searching for the right words to help Atem find the strength to move on. "We both loved Yugi, and we'll always miss him. But we can't let our grief hold us back. We need to honor his memory by living the lives he would have wanted us to live."
".. you don't understand..", Atem then said. ".. I wasted his sacrifice before he made it. He wanted to share his memories with me and I, in my foolish thinking, refused. We wouldn't have had this duel if I'd just agreed back then..!"
It broke Solomon's heart to hear the usually strong voice crack like this. Atem had a point, but Solomon would be damned before he'd let him know that.
Instead, Solomon took a deep breath and gently placed a hand on Atem's shoulder. "Atem, it's true that we can't change the past. But dwelling on what-ifs and regrets won't help us move forward. Yugi made his decision, and we have to respect it."
Atem clenched his fists, frustration and guilt evident on his face. But Solomon continued, his voice steady and comforting. "Instead of focusing on the past, let's remember the good times we shared with Yugi and learn from our experiences. We can't bring him back, but we can make sure his memory lives on in our hearts and actions."
Atem closed his eyes, taking a deep breath as he absorbed Solomon's words. He knew that he couldn't change the past, but he could shape his future. And the best way to honor Yugi's memory was to live a life full of love, friendship, and purpose.
From that day forward, Atem slowly began to heal. With the support of his friends and Solomon, he gradually found the strength to move on. He dedicated himself to learning more about the world and the people around him, embracing the life that Yugi had given him.
And though Yugi's absence would always be felt, Atem was determined to make the most of the life he had been given. He would honor Yugi's sacrifice and memory, cherishing the bond they shared and ensuring that Yugi's spirit lived on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Atem closed his eyes, taking a deep breath as he absorbed Solomon's words. He knew that he couldn't change the past, but he could shape his future. And the best way to honor Yugi's memory was to live a life full of love, friendship, and purpose.
But it seemed so wrong. Unjust even. If Yugi had asked him beforehand, he surely had declined - which was likely the point why Yugi had kept it to himself. All the way to the day... The pain was overwhelming.
"Please leave me alone..", he finally said, his voice just a bare whisper. Solomon hesitated, then nodded.
"If you need anything, let me know"
Atem nodded weakly, grateful for Solomon's understanding. As the elder left the room, Atem was once again alone with his thoughts. The pain of losing Yugi was still raw, and the guilt gnawed at him, but he knew that he couldn't let it consume him.
Still this didn't change a single thing. Sobbing softly he rolled onto his side, trying to escape the harsh reality by sleeping. Who cared if he starved. He wasn't even that hungry.
As days went by, Atem's friends became increasingly worried about his state. They could see that he was not taking care of himself and that the grief was consuming him. They knew that they had to intervene before Atem's well-being deteriorated any further.
Joey, Tea, and Tristan decided to pay Atem a visit, hoping that their presence and support would help him find the strength to heal. When they arrived, Solomon greeted them at the door, his eyes filled with concern.
"I'm glad you're here," he said. "Atem has been isolating himself, and I fear it's only making things worse."
The trio nodded and made their way to Atem's room, where they found him curled up on his bed. His eyes were red and puffy from crying, and he looked like he hadn't slept in days.
"Atem," Tea said softly, sitting down next to him. "We're worried about you. We're all hurting, but we can't let grief control our lives."
Joey chimed in, "Yeah, man. We're here for you, just like Yugi would have wanted. Let's help each other through this."
Atem looked at his friends, their faces filled with genuine concern and love. He realized that he was not alone in his pain, and that they were all suffering together. He finally understood the importance of leaning on each other for support during difficult times. But understanding didn't mean he accepted it.
"Just leave me alone..", he repeated what he'd told Solomon, turning his back on them again.
"Yeah, right. As if, man..", Joey sighed, stepping up to the bed and pulling the blanket away under which Atem had hid himself. "Holy sh... You need to eat something, man..", he breathed after a moment. One week. It had only been one week and there was barely anything on their friend's ribs. He wasn't thin - he was skinny.
Tea and Tristan exchanged worried glances before joining Joey at Atem's bedside. Tea gently took Atem's hand, her voice firm but caring. "Atem, we understand that you're hurting, but you can't let this destroy you. Yugi wouldn't want this for you."
Atem's eyes filled with tears, but he remained silent, the weight of his grief still heavy on his heart. Tristan stepped forward, placing a hand on Atem's shoulder. "We're not leaving you, buddy. We're here to help you, whether you like it or not."
The touch send another emotion through the former spirit. Anger. Why couldn't they just leave him alone?! All he asked was just that! With more speed than could've been expected in his state he stood from the bed, ready to unleash the wrath he felt against himself on poor Tristan, who flinched back the second Atem had moved, but his malnourished body had the last word.
Before he could even utter a syllable, he got incredibly lightheaded before his vision turned black. Joey and Tristan acted quickly, catching Atem before he hit the ground. They carefully laid him back on the bed, worried looks etched on their faces. Tea quickly fetched a glass of water while Solomon hurried into the room.
"What happened?" Solomon asked, his voice filled with concern.
"He passed out," Joey replied, looking at Atem with worry.
Solomon nodded, his eyes scanning Atem's frail form. "I'll call a doctor"
As Solomon made the call, Joey, Tristan, and Tea stayed by Atem's side, holding his hand and offering him words of comfort. It was clear to them now that Atem was in serious trouble, and they needed to do everything they could to help him recover.
When the doctor arrived, they quickly examined Atem, taking his vitals and running some tests. The news wasn't good. Atem was severely malnourished and dehydrated, and his body was in a fragile state.
The doctor advised that Atem be hospitalized immediately, where he could receive proper care and treatment. The group agreed, knowing that it was the best thing for their friend's health and well-being.
As Atem was taken to the hospital, his friends were filled with worry and concern, but also hope. They knew that Atem was a fighter, and that with their love and support, he could overcome this obstacle and come out stronger on the other side.
The weeks passed and there was little improvement to their friend's state. It was as if he didn't even want to get better, even though the doctors pumped him full of nutrients and kept his water and salt levels in check. Atem spent the most time in a semi-comatose state, either sleeping or numbly staring at the wall, hearing but not listening when someone talked to him.
What was the point anyway.. the only light he'd known was gone. Darkness was all he'd ever known and he realised it would be his only companion as long as he lived. He didn't deserve a partner. All he'd ever brought anyone was an early demise.
Atem's friends visited him every day, bringing him gifts, sharing stories, and doing everything they could to lift his spirits. But nothing seemed to work. Atem remained in a state of deep depression, his grief and guilt weighing him down.
Until that one night.
At first he thought a nurse had come into the room and he was fully determined to ignore her. But then he sensed something different. When the late-night visitor spoke up, he felt his heart stop.
".. other me?"
Atem slowly turned his head to see the ghostly figure of Yugi standing at the foot of his bed. He couldn't believe his eyes. Was this a hallucination? A dream? But as Yugi spoke again, his voice soft and gentle, Atem knew that it was real.
"Atem, I know you're hurting. But you can't let grief consume you. You have so much to live for, so many people who love you and need you. I made my choice, and I don't regret it. But you have a future ahead of you, one that's filled with hope and possibility."
Atem was speechless, his eyes locked onto Yugi's form. He wanted to reach out and touch him, to make sure that he was really there. But before he could say anything, Yugi continued.
"I want you to promise me something, Atem. Promise me that you'll live your life to the fullest, that you'll never forget the bond we shared or the love that surrounds you. Promise me that you'll honor my memory by living a life filled with love, friendship, and purpose."
Atem nodded slowly, tears streaming down his face. "I promise, Yugi. I'll do everything I can to honor your memory and to make you proud."
With that, Yugi's form faded away, leaving Atem in a state of awe and wonder. He knew that Yugi's visit was a sign, a message from beyond that he needed to hear. And from that moment on, Atem made a conscious effort to live up to his promise, to live a life full of purpose and meaning, all while honoring Yugi's memory and the bond they shared.
The gang was surprised in the change that went on in the former spirit. From one day to the next he started eating, drinking and made an honest effort of getting better, to the point of even surpassing the doctors' expectations.
He of course didn't tell them what had led to this change of heart, lest they'd deem him crazy, on top of weak. But at least one of both he could change.
Atem threw himself into his physical therapy with newfound determination, working hard to regain his strength and mobility. He started joining his friends on outings, attending local events, and even taking up new hobbies. He was amazed at how much he had been missing out on, and how much life he had left to experience.
As time passed, Atem found that the pain of losing Yugi was still there, but it no longer consumed him. Instead, he focused on the love and memories they shared, cherishing them always.
He knew that Yugi was watching over him, and that he would always be a part of his life, guiding him and inspiring him to be the best version of himself. And with that knowledge, Atem faced each day with renewed hope and purpose, honoring Yugi's memory in everything he did.
One evening he sat on his desk - well, actually it was Yugi's - and went through his deck. He'd taken that habit recently, it was calming and got his mind off things. He'd learned that especially in the darker hours of the day, memories tended to surface most often and take a depressing turn. It wasn't healthy to try and ignore them to death, but it was better than drowning in them.
As he inspected each familiar, well-worn and loved card, his eyes found themselves drawn to one in particular. Dark magician. He picked it up, carefully as if it could disintegrate if he didn't pay it the proper respect it deserved.
"Aibou's favorite..", he sighed to himself. "Our favorite..", he corrected himself then.
As he held the Dark Magician card, memories flooded back to him - memories of Yugi, memories of their duels, memories of the bond they shared. Atem closed his eyes, allowing himself to fully embrace the emotions that washed over him. He knew that he would never forget Yugi, nor would he ever forget the lessons that he had taught him.
Slowly, Atem placed the Dark Magician card back into the deck, shuffling it carefully. He knew that he had a lot to live for, and that Yugi's memory would always be with him, guiding him on his journey.
With a newfound sense of purpose and determination, Atem picked up the deck and headed out into the night, ready to face whatever the future held, with Yugi's memory as his guide.
He decided to call it a day; tomorrow he had to be well-rested for another day in the game store. Being too proud to accept charity, he'd offered to help the elder Muto - which was gladly taken. Atem liked working, he found. It felt good to be useful to someone. To anyone, at least. He growled softly as his thoughts were taking that direction again and decided to skip showering and go to bed before they went out of hand.
Just before he fell asleep, he thought he felt someone's presence in the room but was out too quickly to read much into it.
The next morning, Atem woke up feeling surprisingly well-rested and energized. As he got dressed and headed out the door, he couldn't shake the feeling that someone had been watching over him the previous night. It was a strange sensation, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it.
As he made his way to the game store, Atem couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement. He loved helping out at the store, interacting with customers, and sharing his knowledge of the game. It was a small but meaningful way for him to give back to the community that had embraced him and Yugi so warmly.
Throughout the day, Atem found himself lost in the thrill of the game, and the joy of helping others. He was reminded of the passion that he and Yugi had shared, and it filled him with a renewed sense of purpose.
As the day drew to a close, Atem bid farewell to the customers and headed out of the store. As he stepped out into the street, he felt a sense of peace wash over him, and he knew that he was on the right path. With Yugi's memory in his heart, and the support of his friends and community, Atem was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
Taking walks before sunset had become another habit. When the weather allowed it and the day hadn't been too busy, he'd just venture outside and walk until he was tired. It was relaxing to see the city around getting quieter with every moment that passed until it fell completely silent, the streets becoming emptier with only one or two cars passing by every now and then.
He knew which paths he could take and which to avoid, never straying from the safe route. He could defend himself, but it just wasn't worth the bruises. Without his magic, he'd have to resort to good old violence which just wasn't his speed. He didn't like fighting, other than duelling, which had lost its charm somewhat as well. Lots had lost its purpose, but he'd stopped focusing on that. He'd come to the conclusion that if he just somehow got through life, he'd keep his promise and would see his partner again - eventually. No need to rush.
As Atem walked, he found himself lost in thought, reflecting on the journey that had brought him to this point. He thought about the battles he had fought, the people he had met, and the memories he had made with Yugi by his side. He knew that he had much to be grateful for, even in the face of loss and pain.
As he continued to walk, he noticed a figure approaching him from a distance. At first, he felt a twinge of anxiety, but as the figure drew closer, he recognized it as a familiar face. It was Ishizu.
"Atem, it's good to see you," she said warmly, stepping closer to him.
"It's good to see you too," Atem replied, a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. He was grateful for the familiar face and the unexpected company.
They walked together for a while, exchanging small talk and catching up on each other's lives. Atem found himself feeling more and more at ease in Ishizu's presence, and he realized how much he had missed their conversations.
As they parted ways, Atem felt a sense of contentment wash over him. He knew that he still had a long road ahead of him, but he felt more confident and hopeful than he had in a long time. With the support of his friends and the memories of his partner, Atem knew that he could face whatever the future had in store.
What left him wondering were Ishizu's cryptic messages though. When he'd mentioned that he still missed Yugi, she had fallen silent and then given him a time and a place. He was to come there right then - to see something interesting and possibly enlightening. Atem didn't know what that could mean, but was still intrigued. It would be the next full moon, in about a week's time at a clearing in the middle of nowhere, but at least he had the coordinates to work with.
He returned home that evening, thinking.
The next week passed by in a blur, with Atem working at the game store during the day and taking his usual walks at night. But as the day of the full moon approached, he found himself growing more and more nervous. He had a feeling that his life was about to change again, and he wasn't sure if he was ready for it.
Nonetheless he ventured out into the night on the first day of full moon, just as Ishizu had told him. Every instinct told him to bolt, not to go there, but curiosity was a curse and he was especially cursed. As he approached the edge of the forest, his guts feeling made one last attempt to stop him but he ignored it.
The clearing was quiet and still, bathed in the pale glow of the moon. Atem could sense a faint magic in the air, but it was unlike anything he had ever encountered before. He looked around, but saw no one.
Suddenly, he heard a soft voice behind him. "Welcome, Atem."
He turned around, startled. Ishizu was standing there, dressed in a flowing white gown that seemed to shimmer in the moonlight. She beckoned him forward.
"Come, Atem. There is something I want to show you."
Atem followed her deeper into the clearing, his heart pounding in his chest. He had no idea what to expect, but he trusted Ishizu. She had always been a wise and mysterious figure in his life.
As they reached the center of the clearing, Atem saw a strange circle drawn on the ground, glowing with a soft, pulsing light. Ishizu gestured for him to step inside.
"What is this?" Atem asked, feeling a sense of unease.
"It is a gateway," Ishizu said simply. "A gateway to the afterlife."
Atem felt his stomach drop. Was this some kind of trick? Was Ishizu trying to lure him into a trap?
"I don't understand," he said, trying to keep his voice steady. "Why are you showing me this?"
"Because," Ishizu replied, her eyes solemn. "I believe that Yugi would want you to know that he is at peace. That his sacrifice was not in vain. And that he is waiting for you on the other side."
Atem hesitated. If he went in there now, odds were he couldn't return. What would happen to his promise then? Yugi would never forgive him. He looked at Ishizu who didn't give any indication of what he was supposed to do. More it seemed as if she was waiting for his decision.
He looked between her and the circle, unsure of what to do.
"What if I don't step through?"
Ishizu's expression remained neutral as she responded. "Then you'll never know what could have been. But the choice is yours, Atem. Your destiny is in your own hands."
Atem took a deep breath and made his decision. He stepped into the circle, feeling a surge of energy wash over him as he crossed the threshold. The world around him began to blur and shift, and he felt himself being pulled into a vortex of light.
When he opened his eyes again, he found himself in a completely different place. The air was thick with magic, and the sky was a deep shade of purple. He turned to Ishizu, his eyes wide with wonder. "Where are we?"
Ishizu smiled faintly. "We're in the Shadow Realm. This is where the spirits of the dead reside."
Atem's heart skipped a beat as he realized the implications of what she was saying. "Are you saying that Yugi is here?"
Ishizu nodded. "Yes, he is. But be warned, Atem. This place is not meant for the living. If you stay here for too long, you may lose yourself to the darkness."
Atem felt a chill run down his spine as he looked around, feeling a sense of unease settle in his gut. But he couldn't turn back now. He had to see Yugi again, no matter the cost.
It couldn't be - Yugi was too good a soul to be in the shadow realm. He was supposed to live in eternal bliss by now! Atem gave Ishizu one last look, then started running into the miasma that surrounded them.
Immediately he could feel his inner demons stir. Ishizu was right; they fed from the darkness surrounding him - and his own. If Yugi was here, his soul was in danger. He'd never had the power to withstand the shadow realm, not even when he was still alive. Atem felt his heart race as he picked up his speed.
If he concentrated on it.. he could feel Yugi. With a faint shimmer of hope he followed this feeling.
As he ran deeper into the shadow realm, the darkness seemed to become more intense. The ground beneath his feet felt unstable, as if he was running on shifting sands. Atem's breathing became heavy and ragged, his body pushed to its limits. But he refused to stop.
Finally, he saw a faint light in the distance, and his heart leapt with hope. As he got closer, he could see a figure standing in the center of the light. It was Yugi, and he looked just as he had in life.
"Atem..?" Yugi's voice was soft and filled with wonder. "Is that really you?"
Atem could barely speak, his throat dry from running and his emotions overwhelming him. "Yugi.. I'm so sorry.. I should have listened to you.."
Yugi's face softened with understanding. "It's alright, Atem. I knew you would come eventually. You always were stubborn."
Atem stepped forward, his heart filled with love and regret. "I miss you, Aibou. I should have told you how much you meant to me."
Yugi smiled, a warm and loving expression that lit up his face. "I know, Atem. And I feel the same way. But we can't change the past. We can only move forward, and make the most of the time we have left."
Atem nodded, feeling tears stream down his face. "I'll never forget you, Yugi. I promise."
Yugi reached out and took Atem's hand, squeezing it gently. "I'll always be with you, Atem. In your heart and in your memories. And you'll always be in mine."
Atem closed his eyes, feeling a sense of peace and closure wash over him. He knew that Yugi was right - they couldn't change the past, but they could make the most of their futures. And with Yugi's memory to guide him, Atem felt like he could face anything.
"Let's get you out of here, Aibou.. You don't belong with the shadows..", Atem finally whispered, his voice heavy with tears. He didn't want to part with Yugi yet, not after finding him again, but he knew his friend couldn't stay in this dangerous domain.
Yugi nodded weakly, his own eyes filled with tears.
Atem gently lifted Yugi up, holding him close as they began making their way out of the shadow realm. The journey was treacherous and filled with danger, but Atem was determined to get Yugi out of there safely.
As they emerged from the shadows, they found themselves not at the clearing where Ishizu waited, but at a very light and bright place.
"I'll.. be fine here, other me..", Yugi said. "This is.."
"The true afterlife..", Atem finished for him and Yugi nodded.
".. I know what I said.. and I know what I made you promise..", Yugi again started. ".. but you have a choice you know. I don't want to see you suffer and I know how you just grind through each day. Do you want to come with me?"
Atem was taken aback by Yugi's words. He had always thought that his place was in the mortal realm, living out the life that Yugi had given him. But the thought of being reunited with his partner, in eternal bliss and happiness, was tempting.
For a moment, Atem was silent as he considered his options. But then he made his decision.
"I can't come with you, Aibou," he said, his voice filled with determination. "I made a promise to you, and I intend to keep it. I will live out my life in the mortal realm, making the most of the time you gave me. But I will never forget you, and I will always love you."
Yugi smiled, his eyes shining with love and understanding. "I wouldn't expect anything less from you, other me."
As they said their final goodbyes, Atem felt a sense of peace and closure that he had not felt since Yugi's sacrifice. He knew that his partner was in a better place now, and that he had a purpose to fulfill in the mortal realm.
As he returned to the clearing where Ishizu waited, he felt a newfound sense of purpose and determination. He would make the most of the time he had left, honoring Yugi's memory and living a life full of love and purpose.
"I was afraid you wouldn't return, my Pharaoh", Ishizu said once he stumbled onto the clearing, his mind and heart stable but his legs less so. She reached out to help him but he found his balance before she had to catch him. Atem nodded, trying not to regret the choice he'd made.
"I had to see it for myself," Atem replied, his voice heavy with emotion. "I couldn't just take your word for it."
Ishizu gave him a small smile. "I understand. I'm just glad you made it back safely."
Atem looked around the clearing, taking in the familiar surroundings. "What now? What am I supposed to do?"
"That's for you to decide," Ishizu said. "But I hope that you can find peace in the knowledge that Yugi is at peace, and that you have fulfilled your promise to him."
Atem nodded slowly, still lost in thought. He knew that he couldn't change the past, but he could honor Yugi's memory by living a life full of love and purpose. It was time for him to move forward, to let go of his guilt and embrace the future.
"Thank you, Ishizu," Atem said, his voice sincere. "For everything."
Ishizu smiled again. "You are always welcome, my Pharaoh. And remember, I am always here if you need guidance."
With those words, Ishizu disappeared into the night, leaving Atem alone with his thoughts. He looked up at the moon, feeling a sense of calm wash over him. Yugi was at peace, and it was time for him to find his own peace as well.
The afterlife could wait, so Atem decided. He had a promise to fulfill; to himself, to Yugi and to their friends. He couldn't just roll over and die here, not after what everyone had done. And Yugi, content with his partner's decision, would stay true to his own word; he'd wait.
As it turned out, he didn't have to wait much longer.
A few years came and went as if in a blur.
Grandfather Muto had passed, leaving the shop to Atem who had long since adapted to his new reality. The gang had parted ways, as was inevitable. Everyone had to walk their own path in life after all. They were still in contact, but they rarely came together anymore.
One day, as Atem was closing up the shop, he saw a familiar face walking towards him. He felt his heard race at the sight.
It was Yugi, just as he had always remembered him, with a smile on his face and a glint in his eye. Atem couldn't believe his eyes and for a moment he thought he was dreaming.
But as Yugi approached him and wrapped him in a warm embrace, Atem knew that it was real. "I missed you, other me", Yugi said, his voice full of love and joy. Tears streamed down Atem's face as he hugged Yugi back, his heart overflowing with emotion that had been subdued and repressed forever.
"You look tired, other me.. have been so for weeks now. Isn't that so?", Yugi smiled sadly and Atem just held him closer.
".. I want to be honest.. I'm not just here to visit", Yugi said and the regret was tangible in his tone.
".. you've died, other me. You were sick and never knew it. It claimed your life."
Atem frowned, looked down at himself. Swallowed hard; down at himself indeed. He looked asleep with his head leaning on his arms, as he rested them on the counter, but he couldn't see himself breathing. When had that happened? He could've sworn he had been awake moments ago..
"Aibou.. I.."
"Shhh.. it's alright. Let go. You fulfilled your promise. I'm proud of you."
With those words, Atem took his last breath, feeling at peace knowing that he had kept his promise to Yugi and had lived a life full of love and purpose. As his spirit left his body, he felt Yugi's presence surrounding him, guiding him towards the light.
As they walked together towards the afterlife, Atem realized that death was not an end, but a new beginning. And with Yugi by his side, he knew that he was ready for whatever lay ahead.
