"Pick up!" Elena cried into her steering wheel as the phone call she had made went to voicemail. The rain poured down intensely. She was too distracted to worry about it like she normally would. The roads were dark and slippery. Elena was racing to get to the airport. She was filled with anxiety and panic. She dialed the number once again. No answer. The rain came down harder, the roads were flooding. She dialed once more but this time she decided to leave a voicemail. "Hi. It's me. I'm heading to the airport right now. I'm hoping to catch you before your flight takes off. If I don't make it there I just want you to know how sorry I am. I was scared and confused about everything. I didn't know what I wanted but I do know." She took a deep breath. "I need to tell you something. It's not the type of news I want to drop over the phone. So please if you get this message, don't get on the plane. I'm rushing to get there and I need to see you." Elena reached for her phone to hang up but it fell into the floor of the passenger's seat. "Fuck." She said as she reached for the phone. Elena looked back up at the road and her eyes widened, seeing a deer in the road. She swerved quickly and rammed right into a tree. Everything went dark.
Elena's eyelids fluttered open, the bright lighting was blinding. She winced as her eyes burned. She felt pain in her head. It felt like the worst migraine of her life. She felt really confused about the sensations she was experiencing. Elena slowly blinked. As her vision started to come back she noticed that she was in the hospital. She felt very scared. She looked all over the room and saw she was surrounded by flowers and gifts. She tried to sit up but was too sore. "Hello?" She called out.
Suddenly she was surprised to see a flood of doctors and nurses. They treated her like some science experiment and not a patient that had many questions. She began feeling frustrated. "Can someone please tell me what's going on?" She begged for answers. She tried to remember but she couldn't. Elena didn't know who she was. Why she was here and what was wrong with her.
A doctor with forgiving eyes looked at the other people in the room. "Can you give me a moment alone with Ms. Gilbert?" He asked nicely.
'Ms. Gilbert. Was that my name?' She thought.
He pulled up a chair next to her bed and hesitated to speak. "Ms. Gilbert, I'm Dr. Lopez." He introduced himself. "Do you remember what happened?" He asked her.
Elena looked him in the eyes with a shaky voice. "I don't remember a thing." She felt hollow and weak.
"You suffered a horrible car accident a few months ago. You've been in a coma for ten weeks." He looked at her.
"What?!" Elena's eyes widened. Shivers went down her spine. She started to panic.
"I know this is a shock but the good news is that you haven't suffered any major injuries but there is something." He looked at Elena. "I'm sorry to have to tell you this but you also lost the baby." He stated.
"Baby?" She was sure that this wasn't real, that this must be some sick joke.
"You didn't know you were pregnant?" Dr. Lopez looked at his notes.
"I don't remember anything." Elena's voice breaks. Tears are building in her eyes.
"Do you know what year it is?" He asked her.
Elena looked at him confused, trying to think about it. He began to feel concerned.
"Do you know what your name is?" He flipped his pages on the paperwork.
"No." She said, scared.
Dr. Lopez looks up at her. "We need to run some tests."
Elena's Diary Entry
It's been a few days since I woke up from my coma. The doctors did exams and tests. They encouraged me to write down my feelings and anything I remember. I had so many questions but they wouldn't let anyone visit. Only family, in which none came to see me. I didn't know if I even had family at this point. All I know is my name is Elena Gilbert. I'm 19 years old and I was pregnant but now I'm not.
"Elena?" A voice filled the hospital room.
"Yes?" Elena said, putting her diary on the table, watching the women with beautiful blonde hair walk into the room.
"I'm so happy you're alive!" She shrieked, throwing her gift box on the table, rushing to Elena's side.
"Who are you?" Elena asked her, she thought she seemed nice.
The blonde haired woman laughed in discomfort. "I'm Caroline Forbes." She said hoping it would jog her memory. "We're co-stars." Caroline filled her in. She was slightly disappointed that Elena didn't remember right then and there.
"Co-stars? Of what?" Elena was confused.
Caroline raised her eyebrow. "No one told you?" She asked in disbelief.
"Told me what?" She wondered.
"We work on a television show together. It's called Mystic Falls. It's a high school drama with a love triangle and all that type of shit." She explained like she was doing an elevator pitch to Elena.
"Are you fucking with a former comatose patient?" Elena's eyes were widened with shock.
Caroline shook her head in panic. "No, of course not." She nervously laughed. "I don't want to freak you out but it's kinda a big deal." She pulled out a magazine from her purse. "This is us on the cover of Vogue last month. It came out while you were in the hospital so I wanted to show you."
Elena grabbed the magazine from Caroline. She immediately recognized her own face. Her fingers traced the cover. "Meet the stars of Mystic Falls." She whispered out loud.
"I know this is all shocking to you but you are a really good actress and our show is doing really great." Caroline explained before realizing Elena wasn't listening.
She stared so intensely at the cover to the point that she forgot Caroline was in the room. She looked at her co-stars on the cover next to her. Her eyes caught the boy with black hair and arctic blue eyes, he looked so familiar. "Who is this?" Elena asked Caroline.
"Damon Salvatore. The other two boys are Stefan Salvatore and Klaus Mikaelson." Caroline informed her.
"They're brothers?" Elena asked her.
"Yeah Damon was casted for the role but Stefan auditioned too and they loved them both so they found a role for him." Caroline explained.
"This is a lot to take in." Elena sighed, feeling so empty.
"I know, is there anything I can do for you?" She asked her. Caroline felt helpless.
"Are we best friends? Would I tell you everything?" Elena wondered if Caroline knew about the baby.
"You keep to yourself a lot. We're friends but I don't think you share everything with me." Caroline looked at her.
"Am I close with anyone? My own parents are even here. Who am I? I have to be a horrible person if my family doesn't even want me." Elena cried, she was hurt and upset.
"From what I know your family exploited your fame and you don't talk to them anymore. As for anyone else you were in a public relationship with Stefan." Caroline tried her best to cheer up Elena.
"I have a boyfriend? Where is he? Why am I here alone?" She was handling way too much information at once and it was making her head hurt.
"I don't know. He's been in LA ever since the accident. I'm only in town because I had to film a tour of the set for promo. Covington Georgia is not the best place to hang around when you're doing press for other films. Stefan was just in a movie and I think he's trying to keep busy. I don't even know if he heard that you're awake." She looked at her watch. "I can call him if you want?"
"This is so screwed up." Elena rubbed her head.
"You guys have been on and off for almost two years. I don't know if you were on or off when this happened." She explained.
"I don't know what to do." Elena looked at Caroline, scared.
