Chapter 11 - Pack Politics
Steven reflects on the political changes he brought to the Gem empire and his feelings of hypocrisy.
STEVEN
(sighing)
Afterwards, I brought democracy to the Gem Empire, and in hindsight, I feel like an absolute hypocrite. I championed my father's ideals of democracy for the Gems while being content living in this Republic, where the highest offices are gatekept and heavily restricted through meritocratic and aristocratic rules and are just for a bunch of silly aristocratic robe-wearers. Though I've always advocated against such systems in my writing, but I can't help feeling like I'm just another son of the wolf in sheep's clothing, living here in America, isolated from the political troubles of Earth.
Steven shares his thoughts on his limitations in bringing change to Earth and his inability to make a difference.
STEVEN
(sadly)
I never felt like I had the right or the power to change things on Earth as I did with the Gem empire. I don't think I even could do it, considering the complexities of human politics and the deeply ingrained systems that govern our world.
Steven reminisces about Connie's political career and aspirations, admiring her determination and courage.
STEVEN
(smiling)
But Connie... did a lot more than me in that regard, though still very little on a global scale. You know, I once had a notion as a kid that Connie would become president of the States. That never happened, but she liked the idea and it motivated her to pursue her own political ambitions. She became a Delmarva State Representative for one term. But in the end, politics wasn't really her thing; she sought something more compatible with our family life, something that allowed her to make a difference without sacrificing our time together.
Steven reflects on their influence and aspirations, acknowledging the challenges they faced but remaining hopeful for the future.
STEVEN
(chuckling)
I at least hoped that either of us would be as influential as old Emperor Franklin was in the old colonial days, Like I was with the Gem Empire. I seem to have aimed a bit high there, but we both tried our best to make a difference in our own ways. Even though we didn't achieve all our dreams, we were still able to touch the lives of many and inspire change in our own unique ways. And that, in itself, is something worth cherishing.
