Chapter 12 - Modification
Steven reflects on his mother's long-held desire to have a child and the lengths she went to achieve that dream.
STEVEN
(thoughtful)
You really thought about having a child for a long time, two millennia at least, from what I remember from your memories. That Gem Tech had so many human samples... human samples! (laughs) Eww, Mom, that's weird. I'm glad it's smashed into a million pieces. It's even worse since I remember most of that. (cringes)
Steven glanced at the cylinder hovering next to the table, That his mother Rose Quartz had stolen from a long-defunct fertility clinic to aid in his creation, his expression turning more serious as he contemplated the implications of his origins.
STEVEN
(Serious)
The Bubbled cylinder hovering next to the table... I never thought of you as a thief, Mom, but that's really disturbing, But stealing from a fertility clinic? Genetically modifying its contents with gem tech to make me using Dad's sample and creating an artificial womb that you somehow knew how to make, from your time as a Diamond? and Gem Beast hybrids Really Mom? I guess I'm exactly that, except I'm the one in control. It's a unique and fascinating part of who I am. And I guess the cylinder also explains why you both were expecting either a boy or a girl, if I was just a clone of Dad with some genetic engineering from gem magic know-how you would not have expected that I might have been a girl since the egg has that second X chromosome.
Steven wonders if White Diamond would have approved of Gem Beast hybrids.
STEVEN
(pondering)
And I take it that Gem Beast hybrids aren't something White would have approved of, with her obsession with purity and all that. Should I maybe ask her if she knows about it? or maybe I should ask Volleyball your First Pearl, I've avoided asking her about your time together, I did try a few times but it is a really touchy subject for her, I don't know much about those memories I have from that time. They aren't all that clear.
As Steven continued to reflect on the unclear memories and his mother's unclear motivations, he started to understand even more that his existence was the result of a series of intricate decisions, both from his mother and the world around her. These revelations had brought a deeper appreciation for the life he had been given and the unique perspective it provided.
