Amity felt like she had been chasing Luz for what seemed like hours. Whenever it felt like she was getting close, Luz would just speed up. No matter how many times Amity cried out, Luz would never respond, or even look at her. Tears began to roll down Amity's cheeks. Her legs felt like jelly and she could barely breathe straight. This is when she gave up. She stopped.
Putting her hands in her face, Amity sobbed. She sobbed and sobbed, but the tears never stopped. She didn't know why she was chasing Luz, or why Luz was running, but she knew she had failed. Amity's hands were soaked at this point. When she went to wipe them off on the pajama pants she was wearing, she looked up to find something that made her heart sink. Luz's body was turned to stone.
Amity's eyes opened faster than they ever had before. It took her eyes a second to adjust to the dark room, but when they finally did, Amity was greeted by the familiar and comforting setting of her and Luz's bedroom in the Blight manor. The name of the house was somewhat silly, considering the three occupants of the house all had the last name of Noceda, but Amity found it somewhat disrespectful to change the name out of respect for her father.
The first thing Amity after jolting awake was look to her left. Just like every other night, one Luz Noceda lie sound asleep, dreaming about god knows what. Seeing her sleeping beauty safe and sound calmed Amity down somewhat, but not completely. This was the third time she had that same dream in the past 7 days. Amity took the covers off of herself and slowly slipped out of bed, not wanting to risk waking up Luz.
Amity sat down in the kitchen chair, and began chugging a bottle of water. Ever since she first entered the human realm, she had become addicted to the stuff. Water in the boiling isles never tasted all that good to Amity. All the chemicals and treatment it needed to become safe to drink always ruined it, Amity thought. Luckily for her, she could just buy the stuff for super cheap in the human realm.
Almost right on cue to Amity finishing her bottle, a small knock on the wall could be heard behind Amity. "Sweet potato?" Called out a quiet but sweet voice. Amity could tell who it was instantly, but she still looked behind her, just to confirm. In the doorway to the kitchen stood one Luz Noceda, savior of the Boiling Isles, and more importantly to Amity, her loving wife.
"Oh, did I wake you up? I'm sorry." Replied Amity in a similarly quiet voice. Now that Luz had been acknowledged and wouldn't accidentally scare Amity, she walked up next to Amity and sat down in the chair next to her. "You did, but that's not important. What's important to me is that you're okay. I can tell you've been having nightmares." Amity's face went red. Luz knew her all too well. She couldn't hide anything from Luz, and she was a fool to think she could.
"I have…" said Amity after a second of silence. "Why haven't you told me?" Questioned Luz. "You know we're supposed to tell each other everything" she continued. "It's just… they've been about you." Amity looked embarrassed. They were just dreams. They didn't impact reality, so why was Amity so scared? "I'm sorry…" before Amity could get out more of an apology, Amity felt a pair of arms lightly placed around her neck. The arms belonged to Luz, who had gotten up from her seat and hugged Amity.
"Don't apologize Batata, just come back to bed and tell me about them, if you're comfortable." The girls held hands on their short trip back to their bedroom. Neither of them said anything on their way back, partly to avoid waking little Azura, the daughter they had welcomed into the world 4 years ago. Both figured it was a bit cheesy and predictable to name her that, but at the same time they figured it fit. "Azura the Good Witch" had been a major player in bringing them close in the first place, and so they figured she should be a major factor in the next step of their relationship and lives.
Amity and Luz finally returned to their room, and promptly laid back down their bed. Unlike how they had previously been, Luz was cuddled up close to Amity. "In these dreams, you're running away from me. We're in a maze with no discernible features, and you're always a certain distance ahead of me. No matter how much I speed up or call out, you never respond or slow down." Amity began telling a concerned looking Luz. "I can never tell exactly how long I chase you, but it always feels like it's for hours at a time. It's always when I inevitably give up and start crying that I see… you" Amity began to choke up a little bit. She wasn't crying, but her eyes were somewhat more moist than eyes normally are.
"You're on the ground, and turned to stone. That's when I wake up." Luz looked panicked. She knew exactly what the dreams were trying to tell Amity. Luz had never told Amity about what happened to her when she fought Belos. All that Amity knew was that the titan had spoke to her and granted her titan powers. Luz knew she couldn't keep the secret any longer. It was time to tell her.
"Amity… I think I know why you're having those dreams… there's something that I never told you that I think the dreams are trying to tell you." Luz briefly looked away, only to look back at Amity staring at her. "When I fought Belos… I never told you how I got those titan powers. How I got the chance to speak to the titan."
"Belos was about to hit the collector with some type of beam. I… tried to get him out of the way, but I got hit instead. That's when I started to turn to stone." Luz's was very chocked up at this point. She was trying to avoid crying. Her death versus Belos was a very traumatic event for her, as well as her feeling shameful for hiding this from Amity.
"I'm sorry… I never… had the courage to tell you. I didn't want you to worry and I… just…" before Luz could stumble out any more words, her lips were overtaken by another pair. Amity had began to kiss Luz. This was a common thing for the pair to do, but this time felt different. After Amity finally stopped her kiss, Luz got to look at her eyes again. Amity was crying.
"Luz…" was the only word Amity managed to get out. Amity's emotions were a wreck. Amongst the confusing amalgamation of feelings were happiness that her Luz was still with her and sadness that Luz had died. "Promise me something Luz. Tell me everything. Even if you think it would hurt me, tell me everything. We're partners for life. We need to be able to be there for each other." "I promise." Replied Luz.
Amity never had that nightmare again. Maybe it was because she knew what she needed to know. Maybe it was because she held on to Luz just a slight bit more at night. Whatever the reason, Amity was just glad her sweet potato was still next to her.
