Unseen Letters
Chapter Two: Teach me
By: AlienSnowflake

Ruby woke up that morning from the sun rays hitting her face from the nearby window. Light chirping sounds from early birds can be heard as well. When she sat up, she felt there was something heavy on top of her. She looked down and there was a soft blanket wrapped around her. She smiled, knowing it was her older sister who saw her asleep there. She had done this multiple times before.

Then from the corner of her eye, she found her sister lying on her stomach on the floor with colouring pencils beside some empty and some filled papers all over the place. Unlike Ruby, her older sister had long blonde hair with two pigtails on each side with a small crescent shaped cowlick sprouting on top of her head. Her outfit was coloured brown and had an orange bandana wrapped loosely around her neck.

Ruby grinned. She didn't hesitate to pull the blanket away and got up to go over to see her sister. "Good morning, sis! Is Mama home yet?" the little girl asked and stretched her body with a tired yawn.

"Nope," her sister answered, rather quickly, "and none of you two even bothered to wake me up earlier for me to say goodbye to her." She gave Ruby a glare as she saw her little sister making her way towards her, then went back to her drawing.

The red-head sat crossed-legged in front of her sister, "well… you were kinda sleeping and snoring really loud. Didn't wanna wake you up coz you might get angry or–" she scratched her head and looked to the side, "...or something..."

Her sister continued to scribble on the paper. She was drawing what looked like a small tree and a dog. "I wouldn't be angry, Rubes, 'cause I'd go back to sleep afterwards. Saying bye to mom is way more important than losing my sleep schedule."

The two were quiet for a while as Ruby watched her sister draw on a new blank paper. "Sis?" she started.

"Mmm?"

"I wanna draw, too."

Yang smiled, then sat up. "Sure, Rubes. Here," she handed Ruby a blank paper and some colouring pencils, "what do you want to draw?"

"Uhm… I- I don't know what to draw…"

"But I thought you wanted to draw?"

"Yeah, but I don't have any ideas…" the smaller girl shrugged, tapping the red pencil onto her blank canvas like it was a wand to magically draw something out of thin air.

Yang scratched her own head, "uhh… well, you could start by drawing yourself or… well, you can draw mom, maybe both or a family photo?"

Ruby looked at her, "draw Mama?"

"Yeah! You can start with that," the blonde suggested.

Ruby nodded, drawing circles on her paper for a while then she frowned, always poking her pencil through the paper. "This looks really ugly. I don't like it…"

Her sister looked at her paper, "that doesn't look bad. You're just starting. Don't be hard on yourself, Ruby." She patted her head gently.

"Mmkay…" Ruby grabbed the pencil again and drew more shapes, eventually drawing out on what she wanted to draw. A tall figure holding hands with a smaller figure made out of circles and oblongs. Both were scribbled in red colour and smiling.

"Is that mom and you?" her sister asked as she looked over her paper.

Ruby nodded. "Yep! I tried my best."

"You did great, Ruby." Her sister flashed her another smile.

About a while later and more of a mess of paper on the floor, the two girls could smell something nice in the air. Smelt like breakfast.

"Is Mama home and making us breakfast?!" Ruby excitedly said as she bolted up, making the pencils flying out of her lap as she headed towards the kitchen. "Mama, you–"

Instead, it was Daddy who was making breakfast. He had short hair and was blonde like her sister. "Oh, morning, baby," he said. "Are you hungry?"

Ruby frowned, but nodded. "Yeah, guess so, but… I thought Mama would be here makin' breakfast like she does every morning."

"Since she hasn't returned, might as well cook something simple. Just grilled cheese."

"Oooh, yummy! I want two!"

"Now, now, Ruby…" Daddy chuckled, "don't try to hog everything or you'll get a tummy ache like last time."

Ruby grumbled, stomping her little foot a bit.

"Get your sister and help her set the table up."

After breakfast, the girls continued to scribble on their papers that had different shapes and colours. Ruby was trying to write words on a new sheet of paper, but couldn't make out how to write properly.

She was trying to write her own name.

"Hmmm…" the red-head grumbled, her fist holding into her pencil tightly, almost wanting to break it or poke holes into her paper.

Her sister noticed her and looked at what she was concentrating on. "Ruby, you got your letter U upside down. That's what's wrong," she giggled, then scribbling Ruby Rose on the paper with an orange pencil. "See? That's how you spell your name."

"I think... I got it," she said with a big smile on her face, writing her name right under her sister's writing, but a bit messier. "But hold on… your last name is Xiao-Long isn't it, sis? Why don't we share the same last name?"

"It's because your mother wanted you to have her last name, Ruby." The two girls turned around to see their Daddy, who sat himself on the couch with his arms resting on the back and a mug of coffee with the other. "It's fitting since Yang got my last name, and since Ruby Xiao Long-Rose would be a long name for you to write also."

"Oh! Speakin' of writing…" Ruby excitedly stood up and picked up her paper, showing it right into her Daddy's face. "Lookie this! I wrote my name, Daddy!

Daddy almost got attacked by the paper if he didn't move himself back a bit, then took it off his daughter's hands. "You should keep this safe, then show Mom you learned how to write your name."

"Will Mama like my drawing, though? It's a mess…"

"Oh, of course she will." Daddy said, giving back the paper.

"Wish she can see it right now…"

"She spoke to me last night before she left. She did say she will be back soon. But never told me when."

Ruby pouted, looking at her work then sitting down in front of her Daddy.

"Though there is one way you could send it to her."

Ruby felt her ears twitch from those words as she looked up.

"Buuut… it's a low chance that she will ever see it, plus, I have no idea what the address should be, even if you put the letter–"

"I'ma take any chances!" Ruby exclaimed, standing up again. Even her sister got disturbed from her concentration and looked at her. "I want Mama to see all my drawings and my writings! And when she comes back home, she will have all my papers in her hands!"

"Hey, Ruby. As I said, there's a very low chance they'll even make it out of here!"

"But, I need to try, daddy!"

Her sister glared at him behind Ruby. You're screwed, dad.

Daddy sighed in defeat. "You can post it… You know, like a letter," he said, making a rectangle shape with his fingers.

"Oh." That was all Ruby could say, "huh. A letter…"

Yang saw a glimpse of Ruby's silver eyes as she sat back down next to her. It was the look of eagerness. Something she had seen when Ruby was about to do something good or something… stupid.

To be continued...

Response to the reviews:

- Yeah, that's why I wanted Ruby and Summer to talk. It makes it more powerful.

A/N: If you are interested on drawing somethin' for my Fic, feel free to do so. I'd LOVE to see it and show it here.
