Jason Bourne closed his eyes as he collapsed to the ground; no matter how many times he jumped through time and space, no matter how many times he always tried to close his eyes tightly shut, it still felt as if he could still see one-time blur and change until he found himself in another time and place in Earth's history.

He was barely paying any attention to his surroundings when he violently brought up his last meal after throwing himself behind something that felt like a barrel. Once he was finished, he realised he was not alone, and he jerked backwards violently when he felt rather than saw the presence of someone trying to hold him.

"Hey! It is okay," they said, and Jason was surprised to hear it was a woman. "I'm only trying to help."

"I'm okay," Jason gasped.

"Are you?" The woman said sceptically. "I saw you appear from nowhere, you looked like you were spinning on the spot and then you threw yourself down to the ground."

Jason went still; he'd learnt the hard way those who saw him arrive and discovered his power even if he couldn't control it only wanted to use him. "I…don't know what you're talking about," he said, forcing the nausea he was still feeling out of the way, and he turned.

There was indeed a woman there, a beautiful woman with long dark hair and dark eyes, smiling at him knowingly with a dash of mischief in her expression. She was wearing a Victorian-era dress, which made sense as they were in the Victorian period.

"Please, I saw you appear a moment ago, and you've not dressed for this time zone anyway," she added, casting her eyes over him.

Jason reared back. "Time Zone?" He repeated.

The woman nodded. "I'm the Doctor, and I too time travel."

Jason gasped. "You do? I don't believe you."

"When are you from? What year?"

"Why should I tell you?"

The Doctor sighed and reached into her pocket and drew out a piece of technology Jason had seen but never touched before. It was a small silver square with a black screen.

"An iPod?" Jason whispered.

"Yes, an iPod. I got it from the 21st century. It's got great tracks from Taylor Swift and CharliXCX and Beyonce on it," the Doctor watched him closely for his reaction and she was not disappointed when she saw the recognition in his eyes. Now he knew she wasn't bluffing. "Look, I'm the Doctor. I travel in time and space, and I know you can too. But how can you do it?"

"I…I don't know," Jason said. "I don't actively think of a time or place I want to go; it just…happens."

"So you don't have a vortex manipulator? You don't have a Time Ring or anything like that?"

"What's a vortex manipulator?" Jason asked curiously.

The Doctor rolled back the long sleeves of her dress and revealed a large leather strap like a big chunky wristwatch strapped to her wrist. "This is a vortex manipulator. Got it by chance not long ago. Nasty man, he wanted to change history; threw him back into the past, so far, far back he can never leave. Anyway, I restored my freedom and now I can go anywhere and anywhen again. More or less. So, when did you start time travelling?"

"Well, I-," Suddenly Jason looked stricken and then he vanished.

"Oh no," the Doctor closed her eyes and checked the manipulator she'd stolen from Krasko in 1955 after she had learnt of his presence and she'd pulled him through a time rift the TARDIS was near with the old girl acting like a jury-rigged time scoop. She frowned when she saw there was no trace of artron energy, no Kontron radiation, or anything used in normal time travel. That young man was like a ghost, a will o the wisp.

The Doctor shrugged her shoulders, tapping a command into the manipulator's scanning function to record the signature; if she ever came close to that boy again, she wanted to know.

"I never got his name," she added regretfully before she triggered the space/time actuator and she felt the vortex portal open around her, enshrouding her and taking her away.
