Chapter 3: Partner in Crime
Today was the day, the day that Devin would finally go to Hogwarts for the first year. It was 5 am the fog covered the mountains near Devin's house. He heard Tim coming into his room and turning on the lights
"Devin, you need to get dressed otherwise we won't make it in time to platform 9 ¾, "Tim said shaking Devin. Devin turned onto his back smiled at Tim, and got up.
"Im going to make some breakfast," Tim said walking to the door. Devin nodded and got dressed in his favorite jeans and a black sweater.
And walked downstairs, Tim was making pancakes, and Devin sat down and thought about what Hogwarts had to offer him. He heard a lot about Hogwarts, about the four houses. Hufflepuff house of the loyal and hard-working. Slytherin is the house of cunning and ambitions. Gryffindor is the house of the brave and daring and devins favorite is Ravenclaw the house of learning and wisdom.
Tim waited in the car for Devin. Devin walked outside with his trunk and placed it in the trunk of tims old Volkswagen beetle.
"How are we going to get there on time it would take at least a day in this thing," Devin said pointing to the car.
"Dumbledore has made mandatory adjustments" Tim replied winking at Devin.
"Are you sure this is safe?" Devin asked
"Well just have to find out," Tim said before getting in the car, Devin followed Tim and also got in the car.
Tim turned the switch off the car and the car made huge noise 'vrooooooooooooom'
Devin's eyes widened but had no time to think because Tim had floored the throttle. Devin was pushed back in his chair as the car did a burnout. Devin turned to Tim who was smiling like a madman.
As they made their way on the highway, they were met by a huge traffic jam.
"No worries," Tim said while reaching for a small purple button. 'Click' The car accelerated quickly and jumped over the other cars and to devins surprise they began flying.
"Aren't the people going to see us," Devin said while looking at the traffic jam below
"Were invisible" Tim said speeding up "300 miles….. 350…..400….453….500"
The land under them is going by increasingly faster. The tundra was replaced by green forest and then was replaced by sea and finally with white cliffs of Dover.
"Please prepare yourself for landing," Tim said while narrowly avoiding an airliner. They spotted a highway and decided to land. The highway was still fairly empty so they wouldn't make a show while reappearing. With a hard landing, they touched down.
It defines first time in a big city so he was surprised by the number of people that lived there as they drove into the city and to kings cross. Devin walked to platforms 9 and 10 and was dumbfounded by that there was no 9 ¾.
"As always packed with muggles," a middle-aged woman with red hair said
Devin looked to Tim who nodded.
"Excuse me madam do you know where platform 9 ¾ is"
"Yes, of course, you just need to run fast at the wall as you can, and you'll be there"
"Thank you," Devin said smiling
Devin and Tim waited for the muggle train to depart. And took a few paces back and ran at full speed to the wall. They reappeared on the other side and they saw a big red train. Devin and Tim walked to the train.
"Promise you'll write to me," Tim said holding back tears and reaching for a hug
"I will don't worry" Devin replied
"You should get going," Tim said
"Yes, bye," Devin said smiling while stepping into the train
"Bye," Tim said also smiling
He looked for an empty but couldn't find it. He eventually found one with only one student, he looked like a first year with dark hair and grey eyes.
"Hey, do mind if I sit here," Devin asked the other first year
"No, not at all please" sit gesturing to the other bench "I'm cedric diggory"
"Im Devin black" Devin said. He saw Cedric's eyes getting larger
"I don't know my father" he quickly added.
"Sorry, you must get comments often," Cedric said "In what house do you think that you will be?"
"I don't know I'm fairly new to the wizarding world"
"Oh, il probably be in Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff," Cedric said proudly
"Arent Ravenclaw the smart ones?" Devin said in confusion
"Yeah, I heard you have to solve a riddle to enter their common room" Cedric replied
"For what lesson are you most excited?" Devin asked
"Flying," Cedric said grinning
"Yeah me too, it's a bummer that first-years aren't allowed a broomstick"
"It is so dumb I mean what could go wrong."
"At least we'll be able to watch Quidditch," Devin said with his newfound knowledge of Quidditch after reading Quidditch thru the ages.
"Are you going to try out for the team next year?" Cedric asked
"I don't know I've never played quidditch or flown a broom"
"You haven't"
As Cedric and Devin left the train they heard a voice
"Firs years, firs years over here"
"That has to do with Hagrid," Cedric said to Devin "he was in his father's year, and he got suspended in his third year nobody knows why. Some people reckon he was responsible for the murder of a girl"
They walked over to Hagrid.
"Ok is that the first year? Follow me" he gestured to the children
"He's big," Devin said
They followed him to the embankment of the lake. On the other side lay Hogwarts, the castle shining on the moon. It looked truly magical. It was at least 500 meters high, Devin stood openmouthed.
"Come on we need to go," Cedric said who sat in a boat.
Devin quickly got seated in the boat next to Cedric.
"When I call your name you will come to the front of the hall and get sorted," McGonagall said "We have to hurry we already missed the sorting hat song"
She walked to the front of the hall and took a list.
"Adrien Purcey"
A boy with short black hair walked to the front of the hall and sat down.
"Slytherin"
"Fred Weasley"
"Gryffindor
"George Weasley"
"Griffindore"
"Cedric Diggory"
"Ravenclaw"
Cedric smiled and walked to the Ravenclaw table
"Devin Black"
The hall burst into silent whispers, as Devin made his way forward, he put the hat on his head.
"Ah, another black. Let's see talented, need to prove yourself, athlete, wanting to learn, and mhmm what have we here interesting.. Very interesting, has anyone told you look just like your father only difference is you have blond hair, but let us see''
"Ravenclaw"
