Chapter 1

(Hi I'm writing this on my phone and relying a lot on auto correct so if there's any issues please tell me)

Placing her toothbrush down, Amity started to stare at herself in the mirror. The face she always knew was smiling right back at her, like always. Amity had become so much happier these past few years. Between finally kicking her mother out of her life, her dad being in her life, regaining old friends she once pushed away, as well as making new ones along the way. Most importantly to her happiness, however, was the love of her life, Luz Noceda. Luz was the best thing to happen to Amity, possibly ever. Luz was the person who helped Amity out of her shell, helped her discover her sexuality, and even saved her home, The Boiling Isles.

"You done in there?" Called out Amity's brother, Edric, called out from down the hall. This was when Amity realized she had been staring at herself for over a minute now. "Sorry sorry! Coming right out!" Amity replied to her older brother. Amity quickly exited the bathroom, walking past her brother, who took her place in the bathroom to get ready for whatever hi-jinx he was gonna get into today.

Today was a weekend, which meant Luz didn't have college classes. Luz tended to spend her weekends in the boiling isles in order to see her friends, who couldn't spend as much time in the human realm as they wanted due to their own responsibilities and lives in the isles.

Amity always waited by the portal door for her girlfriend to emerge. Their ritual was always the same, but it was one that she always awaited with joy. Luz would emerge from the portal door, and greet Amity by her nickname, which was either "Sweet Potato" or "Batata", depending on which language Luz felt like speaking. Then, the two would hug and exchange a short kiss before going off to do whatever activities they had planned for the day.

Today was somewhat different however. Luz emerged from the portal like she always did, but instead of the beaming smile that Amity knew, loved, and expected, Luz only gave off a very weak, somewhat forced smile. "Hi sweet potato…" Luz said in a low voice. Amity instantly knew something was up. Amity quickly grabbed Luz and embraced her as hard as she could, and after breaking the hug asked, "something's wrong. What happened?" Luz stayed silent for a split second, contemplating what to say, then jolted up and said "oh! Nothing! I'm just… really tired. Didn't sleep much." Luz let out a forced, nervous laugh, and began to walk forwards, hoping to abandon the topic and get on with the day. Amity was going to have none of that, however. Amity quickly dashed in front of Luz and asked the same question again.

"Something's wrong. What happened?" Luz knew her facade was up and finally decided to tell Amity what happened.

*the previous day*

Luz was never a popular girl, or even a well liked one. She had been the victim of relentless bullying by her peers throughout her school years. Luz was not a normal girl. Her grades had always been very inconsistent, and she had significant trouble focusing in class.

"And that concludes class for today. Stay safe and have a good one" said Luz's professor. Luz liked her professor, but she absolutely hated any type of math. Luckily for her, this was her last class of the day, and she got to go home right after.

Luz started her way down the hall and checked both of her phones. One of the phones was her normal human phone. She never really got many messages on it, outside of her mother and Vee's occasional texts asking how she was or asking her to pick something up on her way home. Her other phone however, was much more useful to her, and much more active. It was a phone from the boiling isles. As normal human phones needed cell towers to work, her friends from the isles wouldn't be able to reach her on her human phone, as no cell towers existed in the isles. However, her isles phone was powered by magic and worked across realms.

On it was two messages, both from the same sender. One message said "missing you so much rn! ILYSM!" While the other only contained a purple heart emoji. Luz looked at her phone and smiled, but all of the sudden Luz found herself on the floor, magic phone in front of her. Luz looked up to find 3 girls standing above her, two blonde girls, along with one blue haired girl. Luz's face instantly became a frown at the sight of these three. These were the three girls who tormented Luz the most. "Oooooops! Sooooorry!" Said the blue haired girl sarcastically. "I don't know, you don't sound very sorry Melanie." Said the blonde girl on the left.

Luz looked around as the girls said this, only to see Melanie's foot outstretched. Melanie had tripped Luz and caused her to fall. Before Luz could grab her magic phone and walk off like she always did when these three messed with her, Melanie swiped the phone off the ground and tapped at it for a few seconds, trying to turn it on. Before Luz could snatch it back, Melanie finally figured out how to power it on and turned away from Luz, making her snatch completely miss.

"Wait, oh my god, is this your… girlfriend?" Melanie snickered. Melanie then showed Luz's phone background to her cronies, who also began to laugh. Luz's background on that phone was a selfie of her and amity. In the selfie, Luz was kissing amity on the cheek while amity did her signature blush that Luz knew all too well. Around them was a heart made of smaller hearts, with the hearts on Luz's side being bisexual colors while amity's side contained lesbian colors.

"Holy shit, Luz is dating a girl!" One of the blonde girls said quite loudly. The other blonde girl then said the words that made Luz have to hold back tears. "I knew Luz was a weirdo but I didn't know she was a [—]. The slur felt like a brick hitting Luz directly in the chest. Luz pushed one of the blonde girls aside, snatched her magic phone away Melanie, and ran away, trying and failing to not cry as she exited the school.
