I am completely unsure of ages within the station 19 universe, so for the purposes of this Andy is turning 30
I'm going to put a trigger warning in each chapter, to ensure my readers understand the contents of my fic. :)
TW - mentions of Sexual Assault throughout.
Chapter 7
Today is Andy's 30th birthday. She always hated her birthday she missed being around her family.
Andy sighed as she began getting ready for work. She had walked around the entire apartment, and couldn't see or hear Jack anywhere. Panic had set in slightly, as he was always here. She caught herself spiralling, so she quickly grabbed her keys and bag and rushed out the door to get to the station.
When she got to the station it was quiet. Nobody was in the barn or reception area, so she began panicking a bit more. She ran up the stairs towards the beanery, and just saw the dark kitchen.
She held off going inside for a second, but pulled herself together and began to walk inside. Before she managed to get herself in the room fully, the lights came on and 19 appeared.
"Surprise" They all yelled, and Andy stood there in shock. She could feel the spiralling panic building more and couldn't muster up a sentence. Jack and Robert had noticed Andy's state and both men walked over to her. 19 were confused by their friends reaction and starting trying to talk to her. All she could hear was her name being called over and over along with the question she hated the most, 'Are you okay?'
Jack gently grabbed his friends shoulders, and guided her to a chair. He knew this sight of Andy all too well, since she started living with him. Robert recognised it too from when her father died. Robert had been the one to get her a glass of water, while Jack had tried to bring Andy back to reality.
"Andy, hey. It's me. Your okay. Keep breathing. I'm here" He said. 19 had stayed back while Jack helped Andy. None of them were sure of how to help Andy, so all they could do is watch.
Andy had remained silent. Her eyes had not shifted, nor blinked since the lights switched on in the beanery.
"She's in shock" Robert said to Jack. Jack nodded.
"This has happened a few times since she was in the hospital. It's a part of her PTSD since the rape. It sometimes takes up to an hour for her to snap out of it. Her mind spirals, and sometimes she can't stop it before its too late. Diane taught her some technics to help cope with it, but I guess this surprise was too much for her." He told Robert.
"Andy listen. Everything is okay. This is just a surprise for your birthday, like what I told you about the other day. It's something for us to celebrate you. I'm sorry if it was too much, we were just trying to do something nice." Jack said, seeing if he could coheres Andy back to reality. It worked slightly, as he noticed her eyes blink as she started to cry.
"Guys, lets give Andy some space. Watching her isn't going to help her. There are chores to get done, of you go" Beckett had entered the beanery, and watched the scene unfold. He was slightly appalled by the behaviour of the team just staring at a teammate struggling and made them disperse to give Andy some space. Robert followed the team out, and ensured none of them re-entered the beanery until Andy was better.
"Hey, what's all this about Andy?" Jack asked.
"Y-y-you weren't home" Andy started to say between breathes. "A-a-and I panicked." She continued, finding it hard to catch her breath. "t-then I came here and i-i-it was dark." She added, holding her hand to her chest indicating it was hurting to breathe slightly. "I-i couldn't find anyone, then s-s-suddenly e-everyone appeared." She continued, and began struggling even more.
"Shhh" Jack said, as he helped Andy coach her breathing. "Andy, we thought it was a good idea. I'm sorry I should've known. I told you about the party on Saturday, because i thought you would wanna know. We just thought this would be a nice idea to have something happy for you. I'm so sorry" He said, he pulled Andy into a hug and held her until he felt her breathing go back to normal. After a little while, he guided Andy to her bunk and told her to rest. Beckett decided it would be best to allow Andy to take a personal day, however was not comfortable letting her go off home on her own so allowed her to hang around the station. Jack had decided he would do desk duty, and called Diane on Andy's behalf. He waited around the reception area while he waited for Diane to arrive, in between checking on Andy who had fallen asleep in her bunk.
Beckett had a word with the members of 19, to ensure they were aware of what Andy is dealing with. He had told them that the next time a teammate was struggling that they find something else to do if they weren't helping. He understood that they were a little bit shocked by Andy, however they also knew better than to stand around.
Diane had arrived at the station within an hour of Jack contacting her.
"She's in the beanery right now. She slept for a little bit after the attack, but she still seems kind of out of it. I told her you were coming, but she just nodded." Jack said, clearly worried for his friend.
"Thanks Jack. I'll take her off to a quiet place and talk to her. This is going to be a long process, but she will be okay" Diane said to him, and headed off upstairs to find Andy.
Diane had found Andy, drinking a Moroccan mint tea that Ben had made her. She sat down opposite Andy and accepted a coffee Vic had passed over.
The team quickly dispersed when the alarm sounded, and Diane was thankful because she would've needed to kick them out one way or another.
"Hi Andy" She said, and continued to watch Andy's composure. "Jack said you had a pretty bad attack this morning, and called me to come out and see you. I also had a very concerned email from Captain Beckett saying he was worried about you. Jack didn't give me all the details, but he said you were in a state of shock and had a panic attack." She said. Andy looked up from her cup.
"I erm. I woke up this morning and I couldn't find Jack. I panicked a little, I caught myself spiralling so I bought myself here to try distract myself. But I came and I could only find C-shift who were all leaving. Then I came to the beanery and it was dark and all of a sudden everyone jumped out at me, I guess I just got scared. I never intended to react that way, I was spiralling and I needed someone to help me and they weren't there." Andy explained, Diane gave her a sympathetic smile.
"Andy, your mind is still trying to process triggers for the PTSD. If you ever, ever feel a spiral you can call me. No matter what time of day. Maybe we can have a word with Jack about leaving notes for you, so you know he is okay if he isn't at home. But please, if you ever feel a spiral happen call me. Spirals can be unpleasant when your alone, and you need to know that you aren't alone." Diane said
"I haven't been this bad since I first left the hospital, when I broke the vase. But I've been having that nightmare again, the one where he comes back and he kills me and my brain can't shut off. If I'm working I have a good distraction, but sometimes I feel like everyone is coddling me and I need them to stop because it doesn't help. It just makes me think of him" Andy said, she was calm but there was a slight shake in her voice.
"We need to make your team understand Andy. This will be difficult for them too because they aren't used to seeing you this way. What I can do is have another debriefing with them, make them understand that their coddling is having a slight negative effect, even if they do mean well, and that they need to treat you as normal." Diane explained, and Andy nodded.
Andy thanked Diane for coming and walked her down to reception, afterwards she took herself off to her bunk and lay down to take a nap.
It had been another few hours before she woke up, when Jack walked in with a plate of food
"I thought you might wanna eat" He said, holding the plate out for her. Andy sat up and took the plate from her friend
"Thanks Jack, look I'm sorry about this morning. Maybe I overreacted slightly, but I spoke to Diane and all is good now." She said.
"Andy you cannot keep saying sorry. You have nothing to be sorry for, you did nothing wrong. Look this morning was created by a mixture of things, that we know we can try and avoid next time. Now, we have birthday cake are you coming?" He asked, and Andy nodded
They walked out into the beanery and all of 19 were there singing, including Ross and Diane
Andy smiled and walked into the beanery. She hugged and thanked each one of her friends, and went on the rest of the day celebrating her birthday with those she loved and cared the most.
I've been having some technical difficulties, however this weekend may be the end of my daily updates. I'm looking at updating 3 times a week from next week due to some commitments I have.
