This chapter takes place at the end of "A good day to die" (S2E14) but before Chloe goes to the Lux and before Lucifer goes to Vegas.

Lucifer's POV

The last goodbye

Lucifer had taken his decision. He was not changing his mind. It was for the best, for her best. Still he could not just leave without saying goodbye. Some would argue that technically he already had, earlier in the hospital room. There was so many things he had wanted to say back there but he did not had the right to say them, not after what he learned. And all those unsaid things weighted his heart. This is why he was now walking toward the Detective's house as Lucicat. He made a habit of showing up at her place in the black cat appearance which he referred to as "Lucicat". The Detective and her offspring seemed quite fond of him despite his red eyes, a shape-shifting characteristic he could not get rid of.

All the furniture at the penthouse had been covered. His corvet was parked a few blocks away. This was his final stop before leaving for good. As usual he jumped on the windowsill. The Detective was alone, slouched on her couch, looking tired and … defeated? Lucifer made his presence known with some scratching on the window glass. When she looked up and saw him, the Detective seemed equally happy and sad to see him. But, of course, she wasted no time to let him in. She was wearing a thick jumper so Lucifer made a quick decision and instead of just entering the house, he jumped once more, only this time directly on Chloe. She flinched away, surprised, but Lucifer had already clawed his way up to her shoulders and settled there.

She protested half-heartily. Even his cat's ears could tell how much it was false. Lucifer loved this position. What a shame he only discovered it now. From where he stood, his nose was almost buried in the Detective's hair. Her intoxicating smell was everywhere. Before he realized it, he was rubbing his cheek on her temple, once again purring like his life depended on it. It was something he learned about his Lucicat behavior, he was simply and completely incapable not to purr when the Detective was around. Not that he had tried very hard. It came to him naturally.

She was walking them to the couch when she chuckled. Lucifer loved that sound, even more so when he was causing it, so he doubled his efforts. His tail went around her head, its tip tickling her nose. That made she laughed out loud as she sat a little abruptly. Lucifer stumbled but caught himself, laying heavily on the back of the Detective's head. She turned to him and they stayed there for a long moment, cheek to cheek. The only sound in the room was Lucifer's purring.

"I'm glad you're here, you know. I almost died today. I got poisoned. Dan told me Lucifer saved me. He doesn't really know how he did it though. When I woke up later he was there, by my side. And it felt so nice, so … right to have him just here. But I was so tired I went back to sleep. I thought … maybe I'm just stupid or naive … I thought he'd still be there the next time I'll wake up. Because I actually thought we were going somewhere, you know. With the beach and the kiss … God, I'm so stupid! I guess I hoped I was different to him. Because even if he is always so … him … I want him in my life, Lucifer, I … I think I need him in my life …"

Lucifer's heart arched so much in his little chest that he wondered if cats could get a heart attack. It only confirmed what he thought. She had no control over things. She had no choice. That's why he needed to get away. He rubbed away the tears that were running down her cheeks. He slithered inside her jumper and coiled against her stomach. He so desperately wanted to tell her he wanted that too, he … he needed that to. He wanted her to understand what he could not say, what, for her own sake, he was not authorized to wish for.

Maybe he didn't needed to go. Maybe he could stay here, as Lucicat. Surely that was not what his Father had in mind and the Detective would regain her freedom. He could also keep an eye on her in case other danger than himself came anywhere near. Sadly that would be beyond him. He knew it already. Staying so close and yet so far. He was the Devil after all. He was none to repress his desires, especially some as strong as this one. Lucifer had no choice but to leave. But not right now. He could not leave her right now, hurt and crying.

Chloe laid down on her couch. Lucifer crawled his way up to rest face to face with her. At some point she buried her nose in his fur and mumbled "You smell like whiskey and cigarette. Just like him." Lucifer purred twice harder trying to ease the pain he heard in her voice as she mentioned him. She was upset with everything that just happened. She would get over this. She would get over him. The Devil had rarely met a woman as strong as Chloe Decker. She would be fine, eventually. That's what he repeated to himself over and over and over again as he drove to Las Vegas. He was sure she would be fine. The true question was, would he?
