Chapter 2: A "Great" Start
"And looks like I win again." Tails confirmed as Sonic couldn't believe it, he and Tails have been playing for quite some time as the younger fox has won five times in a row.
"How exactly are you beating me Tails?" Sonic groaned. "Are you cheating?"
"Well, if having a big brain is considered cheating, than yes." Tails joked. "Give in?"
"Not a chance, I'm going to win this time, I can feel it." Sonic not giving in as he shuffled the cards this time and was about to lay them out, only for some strange noises to be heard as Sonic and Tails smelled and then saw smoke and finally the truck coming to a halt on the side of the road. "What's going on Tom?" Sonic coughed as he began to wave the smoke away.
"Something wrong with the engine…" Tom replied as he waved the smoke away from his own face and got out of the car, Sonic, Tails, and Ozzy following suit. "I don't understand, everything was fine right before we left Green Hills." Tom said as he popped the hood of the truck open as a new wave of smoke came blowing out.
"So we're stuck?" Sonic asked as well… They were in the middle of practically nowhere as they were driving along a quiet country road, with trees around for many miles.
"For now, but luckily I always keep some tools in the back for emergencies." Tom smiled as he went and got a tool box necessary for fixing up the truck himself.
"Let me help Tom, I'm good with machines, plus it'll be a lot faster." Tails offered his own mechanical expertise to help Tom fix up the truck.
"No offense Tails, but I got it, it'll be fixed in no time." Tom replied back as Tails kept insisting.
"Oh come on, I flew a plane and upgraded it myself." Tails pouted as Tom started to get to work.
"I know and I appreciate the offer, but I'm fine, why don't you and Sonic make sure everything else is okay." Tom suggested as Sonic stepped in at this point as Tails looked disappointed.
"Yeah, come on bud, the sooner Tom fixes the truck, the sooner we can get back with our trip." Sonic reminded Tails as Sonic put an arm around his friend's back and the two began checking if everything else was alright.
"I wish I could take a look at that engine, maybe I could see something Tom doesn't." Tails spoke softly to Sonic as they did a checklist of everything they brought. "Or reach a spot he can't."
"I know Tails, but I''m sure Tom feels more comfortable if he's the only one touching things we shouldn't." Sonic replied and then had a little chuckle. "I still remember when I first met Tom, part of his truck got destroyed by one of Eggman's robots."
"I guess you're right Sonic…" Tails sighed as it took about another hour until Tom managed to finish up, a little dirty of course as he fixed the problem.
"Alright, I think we're good to go, some pebbles got stuck where they shouldn't, but everything is cleared out so it shouldn't be a problem." Tom reported as he packed up his tools and put them back before returning to the driver's seat. "Everything accounted for?"
"All set." Sonic informing Tom as Tom started up the truck, running perfectly now as they resumed their trip.
"Still could have been faster if I helped…" Tails said under his breath as with the delay, it was starting to get late, with the sun going down over the horizon and the group starting to feel a little sleepy.
Luckily they came across a small roadside motel where they could bunk for the night, of course it wasn't the same place, but it brought back some memories to Sonic and Tom when they were on the run. Now of course it was different and Sonic didn't need to have a fast, wild party to check off something on a bucket list, not that he wanted to anyway. After of course putting disguises for Sonic and Tails, the group tiredly entered their room with two beds.
"I don't know about you guys, but I could fall asleep right away." Sonic yawned and stretched his arms.
"Are you sure that doesn't mean you'll stay up all night." Tom joked.
"Haha… Very funny Tom, but I mean it this time." Sonic rolled his eyes as he launched himself onto one of the beds, getting comfortable, but moving aside. "Come on Tails, there's a spot right here for you." Sonic patted the empty space on the bed next to him.
"Well goodnight boys, we hit the road first thing in the morning." Tom yawned as he laid down on the other bed and fell asleep, followed by Sonic and Tails as they shared the other bed.
As the group rested for the night, while the day up to this point has been very clear and sunny, a rumbling over the distance could be heard as clouds began to roll in…
The next day, Sonic was the first to start to wake up, feeling refreshed and expecting sunlight to be coming through the motel room window into his eyes and birds to be chirping outside… So he was confused when those two things didn't happen and instead he was greeted with the sight of dark grey clouds in the sky and big fat raindrops falling down.
"Oh boy…" Sonic thought as he hoped this rainstorm wouldn't last long and affect their camping.
Everyone else in the motel room began to wake up themselves and like Sonic was not happy with the current weather outside.
"The weather report said it supposed to be clear and sunny all throughout the week…" Tom confused.
"So I guess you don't know everything…" Tails thought as Sonic turned on the TV in the room to go to the weather channel as there was a newsman delivering the latest.
"Well I hope you all are planning to stay indoors and dry because the unexpected rainstorm over the Northwest is reported to last throughout the week, we'll continue to update on any news if the weather changes during this time." The newsman reported as Sonic, Tails, and Tom all looked at each other.
"So are we going back home?" Tails wondered.
"No, I'm sure the weather at our camping spot is alright and even if it's not we can still have fun and who knows, maybe the weather might change again." Tom thought as he was still set on going forth with the trip.
So, getting to the truck from the motel room through the rain, the four of them all cramped into the front of the truck, managing to fit and still have some comfort as Tom started the truck and they resumed their way. As Tom drove the truck, the sky above seemed to grow worse and worse, like the sky itself was angry as the rain literally came down in sheets as Tom put the windshield wipers to its full power.
Lightning flashed through the sky, making the earth below rumble with thunder as they got closer and closer it seemed… One even stuck so close, it lit up the whole truck as Tails got a little scared, holding onto Sonic to find some comfort.
"I rather be safe at home under my covers…" Tails softly spoke to Sonic.
"We'll be okay Tails, I got you." Sonic smiled as he brought his friend closer while another flash of lightning stuck nearby. "I hope…" Sonic thought in his head as this was sure a great start to what should have been a memorable experience…
And I'll leave it there for next time!
I hope you enjoyed and by the way… In the one in a million chance Jeff Fowler is reading this…
Please don't sue me Mr. Fowler if you had the same idea! I swear I didn't steal it! It's just a very lucky coincidence!
Anyway, jokes aside… See everyone later!
