Hello all! This is a one shot for the 503 week prompt Firsts. I am so excited to see what everyone contributes for this week devoted to Edward and Winry. If you don't know, look up 503 week on Tumblr. You will find so much Edwin gratification.
It was a clear night. The stars were shining down on a yellow house on the hill. And a young man with long golden hair was gazing at them while sitting on the front steps. He was contemplating his latest predicament. It had been 6 months since the Promised Day. It had been 4 months since he had come home with his younger brother. And during those 4 months, he had focused on helping Alphonse recover his strength and circadian rhythm quite well. In fact, he was upstairs already asleep.
But now, Alphonse was doing so well on his own that Edward could focus on another dilemma. Winry kissed him on the cheek last night just before bed. And since then, he couldn't focus on anything else. He had stumbled around her all day. He felt so foolish. He didn't know what to say to her so he said nothing.
So Edward was contemplating what this seemingly innocent kiss meant. He thought back over the last few months. Winry had helped with Alphonse's recovery as well. She also had been maintaining Edward's automail. In fact, after the last few sessions, she had been giving him a hug. It was awkward the first time but after that he would look forward to it. That physical embrace felt comforting. He had been a caretaker for so long that he had forgotten what it was like for someone to take care of him.
In the middle of his thought process, he hears the front door open behind him. The source of his troubles came out of the house carrying two steaming mugs. Winry asked, "Are you okay?"
Edward gulped "Yeah, I'm fine. Just peachy. No problems here." He tried laughing it off putting his hand behind his head.
Winry gave him a suspicious look and sat next to him. "I brought you some cider."
"Oh, um, thanks," he said as he took the beverage and sipped it.
Winry shivered. "It's gotten chilly out. Fall must be coming soon."
"Yeah, it is. Do you need to go inside?" He didn't want her to get sick.
Winry shakes her head. "No, I'll be fine for a few minutes. This cider will help warm me up. And the stars are beautiful tonight."
Edward agrees. "Yeah, you can't see them like this in Central."
While keeping their gaze on the stars, Winry asked again "Are you sure you're okay? You've been taking such good care of Alphonse so it's easy to neglect yourself. And you've been acting weird all day."
Edward shook his head. "I'm fine, really I am." Then he thought about it. "Well my shoulder's been stiff where the automail used to be."
"Let me feel," and without Edward's consent, she started to feel his shoulder. He blushed at the contact but soon recovered. She straightened his arm and then had him roll his shoulder. "The muscles feel tight. I'll see if I can loosen them up." Winry began rubbing his shoulders.
Edward groans. It was slightly painful but for some reason, it felt pleasurable at the same time. After a few minutes, Winry releases his shoulders. "There. How does it feel?"
"Way better. Thanks," Edward said and he sipped his cider.
Winry then took his hand, the one that was once her metal creation. "It's hard to believe that this used to be metal."
She entwined her fingers with his. Their hands stay locked together. Edward thinks 'She's been more touchy feely lately.' But he enjoyed this gentleness that had swept over her.
Edward clears his throat "Well my strength is coming back slowly in this arm." He squeezes her hand. Her hand is not that soft due to her career choice. There are rough callouses but somehow her hands seemed magical, always providing life to others.
Then Edward realizes that they are holding hands. She kissed him last night. She's been rubbing his shoulders and giving him hugs. 'Is this flirting?'
He didn't even know what flirting felt like!
Edward looks at her, his cheeks a light pink. She's already looking at him, with a shy smile on her. They're already sitting close together.
She leans in, leading with her lips. She pauses almost asking in a way to see if this is what he wanted to do also.
He follows her lead and leans his face closer to hers and he tilts his head so their noses don't nudge each other. She closes the gap and their lips softly press against each other.
It's so light that he wonders if this is really happening. Ed opens his eyes and sees her face puckered up to his. He realizes that this was really happening and closes his eyes again.
Then Ed realized that he had been holding his breath all this time. And his lungs were starting to scream. He breathed in through his nose, and then he heard her do the same thing. Apparently, she had forgotten to breathe also.
He opened his eyes again to see her face. But her eyes were open too! They both shut their eyes and pressed harder against each other. This made it seem more real. Winry opened her mouth slightly and he followed suit. Her tongue glazed his softly, and his tongue started gliding against hers. Edward breathes again, and hopes he is doing this right.
Then the squeal of a door sounds behind them and they are suddenly bathed in the soft glow of light coming from the house. "Brother, are you out- OH GOD! I'M SORRY!" Alphonse cries out.
Edward and Winry jump back away from each other looking at Alphonse in utter shock. Alphonse slams the door. Winry looks at Ed. Their faces are both red with embarrassment at being caught in the act.
Edward gasps "I'm sorry!"
Winry looks mortified. "You're sorry?!" She then looks incredibly hurt.
Edward realizes he put his foot in his mouth. "I mean, not like that! I mean, we just… And Al…. Ugh! I hate words!"
He puts his face in his hands. "I liked it so don't worry about that."
Winry's face softened. "I liked it too." She rests a hand on his back. He looks up from his hands and he sees her confident smile. He sits up and wraps his arms around her and she embraces him in return. They stay like that just holding each other, knowing that they had shared their first kiss with each other and that it was a moment they would cherish for a long time.
Edward let go first and told her "I need to go check on Al."
Winry nodded. "Yeah, I need to go to bed soon."
Edward stood up and held his hand out to her. She took it and he pulled her up to her feet. They grabbed their mugs and headed inside.
Edward's heart was beating fast. He felt so light, almost like he was on a high. He had kissed the girl that he liked. He had felt a certain way about her for a long time but didn't realize until recently what it was. He knew that it wasn't platonic anymore. This feeling was more akin to a warm fire. 'Was Lieutenant Hawkeye right?' He didn't want to call it the other 'L' word yet.
Winry must have felt the same way. They both carried themselves a little differently heading up the stairs. They said 'good night' and Edward took her hand and squeezed it. He wanted to kiss her again but was afraid to be caught again. 'Oh what the hell,' he thought to himself and gave her a quick peck on the cheek. He didn't want her to have any doubts about how he felt.
Edward opened his door to the room he shared with Alphonse, who was reading in bed with a lamp on. Edward goes in and starts changing clothes to his nighttime t-shirt and boxers. He gets into bed.
Alphonse speaks first "Sorry about that. I couldn't sleep so I was wondering where you were."
Edward lays down in bed hoping to avoid as much conversation as possible. "It's fine. No big deal."
Alphonse smirked. He wasn't going to let Ed go down quietly. "So that's what you and Winry do after I go to bed, huh?"
Edward sits up flustered. "NO, WE DON'T! THAT WAS THE FIRST TIME!"
"Shhh. You wanna wake up Granny? Wait a second. That was seriously the first time?"
Edward flopped down on his pillow and covered his face with one hand. "Yes!"
"Oh brother, I'm sorry. I really am." Al felt bad that he had interrupted a pivotal moment in Edward and Winry's lives.
Edward waves it off with his other hand. "It's fine. No big deal."
"So does that mean she's your girlfriend now?" Alphonse inquired.
Edward bolts up like he had a bad dream. A sweat droplet forms on the side of his face. "Is that what that means?"
Alphonse's eyes widened. "You guys didn't talk about this?"
"NO! You interrupted us, you idiot!" Ed falls back on his bed. He realizes that he's going to have to talk to Winry tomorrow. And words were so much more difficult than just kissing her.
