The early morning sun streamed through the bedroom window, waking Obi-Wan. For a moment he was slightly disorientated, as he had woken up in a bed that wasn't his own. He then remembered he had spent the night with Chae in her new apartment.

Thanks to help from Supreme Chancellor Valorum and money from Asia's family, Chae had moved into an apartment very close to the Temple. Valorum had agreed with Chae that it would be far better suited to her needs. Also, Valorum had made a promise to Chae's mother – Evana Khaar – many years before, when she had been pregnant with Chae and she was on her way home to her family's royal estate on Telos. He had promised he would do all he could to support Chae. Evana had saved the Supreme Chancellor's life, back before he had taken up the position, so he felt it was the least he could do to honour her memory.

Obi-Wan knew his Master, Qui-Gon Jinn, would have noticed his absence from their own shared temple quarters the previous night. It was becoming a more regular occurrence since Chae and Obi-Wan had started their relationship. Qui-Gon knew about their relationship; he knew where Obi-Wan could usually be found when he was gone for a night or more.

After getting up and taking himself to the small bathroom within the quarters, in order to get freshened up, Obi-Wan got into the spare Jedi robes he kept in the quarters and returned to Chae's bedroom. Evana, Chae's baby daughter, was awake, quietly cooing and gurgling. Obi-Wan gently lifted her out of her crib. Evie made a delighted little sound, waving her arms, before settling into his chest. Almost on cue, Chae began to wake. She always did whenever Evie woke up. As Chae began to sit up, Obi-Wan leaned in to give her a kiss.

"Good morning," he said gently.

"Leaving so soon?" Chae asked, noticing he was already fully dressed.

Obi-Wan let out a sigh. "Master Qui-Gon and I are taking part in negotiations with the Naboo blockade….we leave later today."

Chae felt the sadness radiating from him. "Want to help me see to Evie before you go?"

Qui-Gon came by to find his wayward padawan. It was also the perfect excuse to see his granddaughter as well who, by this stage, was dressed and cradled in Obi-Wan's arm as he bottle fed her. It was obvious that Obi-Wan adored Evie. He had taken to being her father so easily. For Qui-Gon, it felt like he had stepped back in time in his own life; back to when he too was a young parent with a baby to care for. Only he had been having to do so as a single grieving father after Chae's mother had passed away suddenly just days after giving birth to Chae. At least Evie had both her birth mother and a surrogate father to raise her. She would grow up experiencing so much love; that much was clear to him.

The whole business with Naboo was to turn their lives upside down. Although none of them were to know it on that particular morning. It was to bring a young boy into their lives – a slave boy from Tatooine – and the whole situation had almost cost Qui-Gon his life. Even though he hadn't ever said it out loud, it had been his daughter and granddaughter that had kept Qui-Gon alive after the massive battle with the Sith, Darth Maul. He was determined to survive and to see his family again. They needed him.

It had taken time for Qui-Gon to recover from the incident. It seemed like his body was determined not to heal as quickly as it should. It wasn't just the injuries from the battle with the Sith, but also a build up of other minor issues that had all decided to surface at the same time. His advancing age didn't help either. The chief healer, Vokara Che, had many a stern word to say to Qui-Gon, for putting off treatment for so long. As a result, it was Obi-Wan who took on the training of the boy, Anakin Skywalker.

During this time, Palpatine had risen to power as Supreme Chancellor. For reasons she couldn't explain, Chae didn't trust him one bit. Little did she know that, one day, she would eventually find out why she didn't trust him.

Several years later.

Chae was now a Jedi knight and had been for some time now. She had headed many successful missions, using diplomacy rather than her lightsaber. Becoming a Jedi Consular seemed like a natural progression for Chae. It appeared that being a mother had helped her to mellow a little and grow as a person. She still had her moments where she would defy the council but these incidents happened less and less as Chae got older.

Chae played a large part in the training of Anakin Skywalker; working alongside Qui-Gon to help Obi-Wan with training Anakin. Despite being a hotheaded, reckless young man, Anakin looked up to Chae and Qui-Gon as much as he did with his Jedi master. Chae was determined that he should have some kind of stable "family" environment. She would often invite him to the apartment for dinner; and Anakin would sometimes crash on the sofa when he just needed a time out from the Temple.

Chae was the first person Anakin spoke to about his relationship with Senator Padme and their subsequent marriage. It wasn't the first time he had gone to her about anything either. He had gone to her with his doubts at becoming a Jedi knight at a far quicker rate than usual, especially when he was having to juggle his commitment to the Order along with being a newly wed. Many times she had been the person Anakin had turned to when he just needed the emotional support. He was a young man going through unusual circumstances at a later age than his fellow Jedi. The other Jedi had the advantage of having grown up in the temple from a very young age, so they were better equipped to deal with their feelings, emotions and the notion of no attachments. Anakin, on the other hand, struggled as he had come to them later in life. But being in Chae's company helped Anakin to centre himself again, even if it was just for a short time.

She was also determined to keep the younger man away from Supreme Chancellor Palpatine as much as she could. She could feel something in the Force; something telling her that Anakin needed to be protected from him. Obi-Wan was curious as to why Chae felt so strongly about it. Eventually he got up the courage to ask her about it. They were curled up on the sofa together, quietly enjoying each other's company, on the day he asked about it.

"It's hard to explain, but the Supreme Chancellor isn't what he seems…all I know is that we need to protect Anakin." Chae paused, before adding, "please….just help me and my father keep him safe."
