It was November in Cali, Columbia, and there was a special day coming soon. It would soon be Mirabel Madrigal's birthday, and she'd be turning 16. Her family wanted to do something nice for her, especially after all she'd been through.
In the past, they hadn't treated her very well, and she had almost been taken advantage of by two horrible men. But now things were different. Mirabel not only had her best friends Angela and Valentina, she now had a boyfriend named Marcos, and now her family was nice to her.
There was no doubt this was going to be a good birthday for Mirabel.
One evening, while Mirabel was in her room doing her homework, the rest of the family was having a meeting.
"Are you sure Mirabel won't find us?" asked Antonio.
They were having the meeting in Julieta and Augustin's bedroom.
"Trust me, mijo. She won't come in." Felix told him.
"We need to make this fiesta perfect, we all need to pitch in. We need decorations, food, presents, and to keep Mirabel occupied to we can get everything ready." Abuela Alma instructed.
"Do we all have know our tasks?" wondered Julieta.
"I'll be in charge of decorations." Isabela piped up.
"I'll be assisting you and Mama with the cooking." Pepa added.
"And I've got the menu all written out." Augustin said.
"I'll talk to Angela, Valentina, and Marcos, and make sure they keep Mirabel out of the house while we get everything ready." Camilo told.
"And Felix and I are going to take Luisa, Dolores, Camilo, and Antonio to pick up Mirabel's presents." Bruno added.
"Mirabel's going to love this." Luisa said.
Suddenly, they heard footsteps and Mirabel's voice.
"Hola, where is everyone?" she called.
"She's finished with her homework." hissed Dolores.
"We can't all leave at once." told Abuela.
First Julieta and Augustin came out of the room.
"Hola, Mirabel." greeted Augustin.
"Mama, where is everyone?"
"Oh, they're around. Come, let's get dinner started." Julieta urged, and her parents took her downstairs.
The Friday before Mirabel's birthday Camilo found Angela and Vanetina at their lockers.
"Hey, chicas." he called.
"Hola, Camilo." said Angela.
"Que pasa?" Valentina wondered.
"Listen, I need you guys to do me a favor."
"What?" Camilo explained about what his family planned to do.
"A fiesta sorpresa? That sounds great." Valentina told.
"Si, but we need you guys to keep her busy while we get everything ready."
"We can do that." replied Angela.
"Great, now I have to find Marcos. Any idea where he is?"
"You could try the computer lab."
"Gracias."
And he hurried off. Just then, Mirabel walked up to them.
"Hola, girls. What were you talking to Camilo about?"
"Oh, he just wanted to know how the costumes are going for the drama club." replied Angela.
"Oh, Camilo. He can be so impatient." Mirabel sighed.
In the computer lab, Marcos was on the computer. Camilo then walked in, and walked up to him.
"Marcos, there you are." he said.
"Hola, Camilo. What are you doing here?"
"I was looking for you."
Camilo then told him what he told Angela and Valentina.
"Mirabel will love that."
"So can you keep her busy?"
"No problemo."
"Gracias."
Then the bell rang, which meant it was time for students to go to their first classes.
School went on normally, and at the end of the day the students went home.
"So Mirabel, why don't we go out for your birthday tomorrow?" Angela suggested.
"I don't know...don't get me wrong, I'd love to spend my birthday with you guys, but I was hoping my family would have something planned." Mirabel answered.
"Okay, Mirabel. But if you change your mind we're just a phone call away." replied Valentina.
And they all went home.
The next day, Mirabel woke up and realized that today was finally her birthday. She quickly got out of bed, and left her room. When she got downstairs, she saw that there wasn't anything special cooking, and no one was even in the kitchen.
"Mama, Papa? Anyone?"
Just then, she heard footsteps. She turned around and saw Felix and Bruno.
"Buenos dias, Tios."
"Buenos dias, Mirabel." greeted Felix.
"Hola." added Bruno.
But to Mirabel's shock they didn't wish her a happy birthday.
"Anything going on today?"
"I have errands to run." Felix replied.
"And worked called, I have to go in for a while." Bruno explained.
And then they left the casita, leaving Mirabel stunned. She then hurried upstairs, to her parents' bedroom. She knocked on the door, and heard Julieta's voice.
"Si?"
"Mama, are you and Papa doing anything today?"
"I got called in for a shift, and your father has some work to do around the casita."
That left Mirabel feeling very deflated. And she went back to her room.
"How could they do this to me?" she asked herself.
She really thought things would be different this year. Then she pulled out her phone, and called Angela and Valentina.
"Hola, girls, does the offer to go out still stand?" she asked.
"Of course." replied Angela.
"We'll be there in a little bit." Valentina told her.
A little while later, Angela and Valentina arrived, and took Mirabel away from the casita. They got into Angela's car, and they drove off.
"All right Mirabel, whatever you want to do we'll do it." said Angela.
"Gracias, girls." replied Mirabel, smiling.
As they rode off, Valentina got a text from Camilo. It read,
"Keep her out for at least a couple hours."
And she quickly texted back,
"Got it."
In the garage of the casita, Camilo got the reply.
"Okay, she's gone. Now we can go." he informed the others.
And he, Dolores, Antonio, Luisa were driven away by Bruno and Felix. In the kitchen, Julieta, Augustin, Pepa, and Abuela were getting ready to cook.
"All right, let's get cooking."
In the living room, Isabela was about to start decorating.
"Now let's transform this place."
Out with Mirabel and her friends, they were having fun going to stores, trying on clothes, jewelry, and going to a cafe to have coffee and snacks.
"This has been fun, girls." Mirabel told them.
"Yeah, no better way to spend a birthday." said Valentina.
"Glad to make you happy." Angela added.
"But, you know, maybe I should get back home."
Angela and Valentina froze. They couldn't let her go home yet, the party wasn't ready.
"Wait, Mirabel." Angela piped up.
She looked up at her.
"Why don't we check out that store over there?"
"Okay, I guess another store wouldn't hurt."
As they went over to it, Angela sneakily texted Marcos. He quickly texted back, saying he would be by soon.
A few minutes later, while the girls were looking around Marcos walked in.
"Hey, Mirabel, there's your boyfriend." said Valentina.
When Mirabel saw Marcos she smiled.
"Marcos." she said happily.
She went over to him, and he pulled her into a hug.
"Feliz cumpleaƱos, Mirabel." he told her.
"What are you doing here?"
"I came to spend some time with my girlfriend."
Mirabel hugged him tighter, and let Marcos lead her away. Angela and Valentina smiled at each other, this would keep her busy a little longer.
Over the next couple hours, Marcos took the girls to a park where they walked around, fed birds, and even went out on paddle boats. Then Marcos, Angela, and Valentina got a text. They carefully looked at their phones while Mirabel wasn't looking.
It was the same for all of them,
"We're ready. Bring her back." "So Mirabel, I think we should get you on home now." suggested Marcos.
"I suppose." Mirabel replied, a little sad.
"What's wrong?"
"Mi familia forgot my birthday."
"Come on, Mirabel. They're your family."
She looked at him, his face looked sincere.
"All right, let's go."
And the four teens left the park.
When they got to the casita, Mirabel opened the front door with her key. When she opened the door, she was confused to see that the lights were off.
"Que?" she wondered.
Valentina who was behind her with the others, flipped the light switch. When the lights came on, all of Mirabel's family members jumped out.
"Surprise! Feliz cumpleaƱos, Mirabel!"
Mirabel couldn't believe her eyes. The room was decorated with blue, white, pink streamers, balloons, and flowers. And there was a banner that read,
"Happy Birthday, Mirabel!"
"What, what is all this?" Mirabel stuttered.
"Your birthday party of course." Abuela explained.
"B-but I thought you all forgot my birthday."
"Mira, we could never forget your birthday." Augustin told her.
"Si, we just wanted to surprise you this year." added Julieta.
Mirabel smiled, and then looked at her friends and boyfriend.
"You guys knew about this didn't you?" she asked them.
The three smiled, and gave knowing looks.
"Well, let's get this fiesta started." she declared.
The party was a success, music played, everyone played some games, and ate tasty snacks. Then it was time for dinner, it was Mirabel's favorite, sudado de pollo. For dessert was birthday cake, but not an ordinary cake but an ice cream cake.
With the candles lit, everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to the birthday girl. When they finished Mirabel blew out the candles, everyone cheered. After everyone got a piece of cake, it was time for the best part of a birthday party...the presents.
Mirabel sat in a chair, and everyone lined up with their gifts. First was Abuela.
"Here you go, mija." she told her, handing her a pink wrapped box.
"Gracias." replied Mirabel.
She tore it open, and inside was a box of different cloths and fabrics.
"These are great, thank you Abuela."
Next was Isabela.
"Hope you like these, Mira."
Her gift to her were a new pair of shoes.
"Thanks Isa, they're very nice."
After her it was Pepa's turn. When Mirabel opened her box, she saw a new pair of earrings that were in the shape of rainbows.
"These are so cute Tia, gracias."
"I saw them, and thought they'd look great on you."
Up next was Camilo's gift.
"What'd you get me, Camilo?"
"Open it and find out."
His gift to her were some special scissors for cutting fabric. She liked them, and thanked him.
"My turn." piped up Felix.
"Gracias."
His gift turned out to be a bracelet. Dolores went next.
"Hope you like these Mirabel, I designed them just for you." she told her.
Mirabel opened it up, and saw a pair of nice headsets. She put them on, and smiled.
"These feel great, gracias."
Her parents were next, they had three gifts for her. One from Julieta, one of Augustin, and one from both of them.
"Happy birthday, Miraboo." Augustin said.
Mirabel smiled, and took the presents. From her mom she got a new sewing kit, her dad gave her a new sketchbook, and both of them gave her a sewing machine.
"Mama, Papa these are great. I could use them."
"We're glad you like them." Julieta replied.
"Here's my gift, sis." Luisa informed.
In her arms she carried a rather large present.
"What is this?" Mirabel wondered, and she started unwrapping it.
To her surprise, it was a mannequin.
"I thought of this when I was doing some boxing practice."
Mirabel smiled, and thanked her. After her Bruno presented her with his gift.
"Happy Mirabel. Hope you like it." he told her.
"Gracias, Tio Bruno."
She opened it, and saw a new eye glass case for her glasses, and it was blue and had a green vine pattern. The last member of her family to give her a gift was Antonio.
"I made this for you in school, Mirabel."
He handed her an envelope, and she opened it. It was a homemade card that read "Happy Birthday", and had a picture of them drawn in crayon.
"It's so cute, Antonio."
"You like it?"
"I love it."
And she hugged him tightly.
From her friends, she got a gift card from Angela, a nice shirt from Valentina, and from Marcos she received a nice necklace.
When the party was over, Mirabel felt so much joy, bliss, and warmth through her body. She waved goodbye to her friends and boyfriend, and then decided to retire to her room with her gifts. When she got to her room, she flopped on her bed.
"What a day." she sighed happily.
And was in no doubt the best birthday she had ever had.
The End
